We’ve received quite a few comments and emails from readers who can’t believe that FlashForward was cancelled when another ABC show, V, was renewed?
On Tuesday, ABC Entertainment President Steve McPherson explained the difficult decision this way, “It was a ‘Sophie’s Choice.’ In the end, FlashForward didn’t engage audiences like we hoped. For V, I get more anecdotal calls and emails than any other show on the schedule. A huge part of rebuilding the network is about taking chances. Some shows just don’t work out.”
While that sounds very nice, ultimately the decision to renew or cancel any TV show comes down to ratings.
FlashForward premiered with a strong 4.0 rating in the 18-49 demographic and 12.47 million viewers. Viewership quickly declined though and has been steadily falling. The two most recent episodes have fallen to a 1.3 rating and about 4.8 million viewers. That’s terrible for a network show.

Meanwhile, V debuted with a 5.2 rating in the demo and 14.3 million viewers. V’s numbers have fallen quite a bit as well but not nearly as low as FlashForward’s. After dropping to a low of a 1.9 rating in the demo and 4.87 million viewers, the last two episodes’ ratings have risen a bit — reaching a 2.3 rating and 5.69 million.
So, while both shows have indeed been struggling, V is still doing quite a bit better than FlashForward (though certainly not great). ABC tends to save one or two struggling shows each season and V was their choice this time around. FlashForward’s ratings were just too low.
V is set to return in early 2011, or possibly as early as November 2010. The four month hiatus really hurt V’s ratings this season. You have to wonder if a six or eight month hiatus will kill it altogether this time?
What do you think? Which show did you prefer? Why do you think that FlashForward’s viewership has dropped so low? Will the long break between seasons kill V?

Horrible news!!! Flash Forward is an amazing show, up there with Lost and 24. The entire season was awesome! It will be missed, and I think this is a huge mistake on the network’s part. V is a remake, at least Flash Forward is ORIGINAL!
Join the group on facebook to help save flashforward.. maybe another channel will pick it up after they see how many people actually wants flashforward back.

V *ucked b*lls
I definately would have chosen to keep Flashforward over the V. Reptile aliens inside human bodies? Corny!
Really disappointed to find out that Flash Forward is being canceled. I really liked the show. Now that lost is gone I see this as the new Lost. Get rid of the V.
Flash Forward’s concept is great and just when you think you’ve got it figured out, the plot thickens & it gets better & better. BOO @ the NBC execs who have decided to nix this show. It’s amazing how a reinvention of a show gets a third chance where as “Flash Forward” gets tossed to the wayside. Really NBC? Maybe you should nix some of your exectuives who have days in which their work performance is less than stellar-just so they can get a dose of the medicine they dish out. The network will be hearing from me REPEATEDLY!
I am so with you.. us UK fans want flashforward we don’t even have V this side and if we do i haven’t even heard about it…
Please bring flashforward back. I hate being left hanging.
omg me too.. i wanna know what happen to dimitri and mark omg…
Finally I got interested in it, really interested and now they pull it. Boy, was I a sucker.
I think there’s no comparison between the two shows. The quality of the production and plotline of Flash Forward is markedly superior to V which is at best a serviceable remake with some entertaining special effects but redundant episodes and unidimensional, unengaging characters. I believe ABC is making a mistake by canceling Flash Forward and will probably exercise my protest by passing on V when it comes back in the fall. I was wondering if there’s any way to make these opinions known to the decision makers at the network.
Oh my gosh.. we should start a group on facebook and maybe they’ll bring it back… omg i think am gonna start one now…
I’ll admit, I was intrigued in the beginning of the season, but it just went on and got a little weird.V has horrible cinematography, the angles they choose are awful. The acting in V is so bad I sometimes laugh when they are trying to be serious. It is nothing compared to FlashFoward. I can’t believe this is happening to the world. I am crying right now.
am crying with you girl… am so piss… I live in the Uk so i don’t know what the Heck V is about but right now i don’t care i want FLASHFOWARD BACK.. THAT LAST EPISODE WAS SO INTENSE,, I FELT LIKE I WAS GIVING BIRTH LOL
I liked the idea of the original V series but it was pretty corny. The second time around was better, but it still is getting pretty corny and implausible on basic premises they should not have overlooked.
FLAHSFORWARD however, I LOVE! And am dang peeved it is slated for cancellation!
This is the network’s fault for giving the hiatis. Any time you give a gap like that after starting a season viewership will drop. This is a good show and I think the hiatis is what killed them. If the hiatis was due to the Olympics then they shouldn’t have started the show at all until after the Olympics ended.
Flashforward > V
Enough said.
Sad…if given the choice it would have been no brainer….keep FlashForward and dump V
