The Foyle’s War TV show on ITV was cancelled after eight seasons, because of rising production costs. Creator Anthony Horowitz tells Digital Spy he was ready for the British detective drama series to end. In the US, some seasons of Foyle’s War aired on PBS. The complete Foyle’s War TV series is available for streaming on Acorn.TV (but Acorn‘s series numbering is confusing).
Foyle’s War is set during and after World War II, with the eighth and final season set in 1947. Michael Kitchen stars as detective Christopher Foyle. The Doyle’s War TV series cast also includes: Honeysuckle Weeks, Ellie Haddington, Tim McMullan, Daniel Weyman, Jeremy Swift, Rupert Vansittart, and Hermione Gulliford.
From Digital Spy:
“I’ve written 26* two-hour films for that show,” [Horowitz] said. “17 years of my life have been devoted to Foyle’s War.
“It had to come to an end sometime. We went from 1940 all the way through to 1947 – and I told countless true stories about the war. I felt that there were no more true stories to tell about that period, I’d sort of covered pretty much every area.
“I’m sad to see it gone, but it’s still out there and people are still watching it. That’s one of the wonders of the digital age.”
*The complete Foyle’s War TV series episode count is 28.
What do you think? Are you a fan of the Foyle’s War TV show? Do you think it should have been cancelled or renewed?
Fantastic series. Always more relevant events about which to write.
I’m a “Yank” & I’ve the entire “Foyle’s War” DVD set. The writing & production are absolutely outstanding in my opinion & genuinely gives one a feeling of what REALLY took place in Wartime England. My only regret is I wish that it’d’ve carried on longer as Mr. Foyle working with MI5 in Postwar Britain was just getting interesting &–in a sense–“Pre-James Bond-ish”! At least if one has read all the ORIGINAL Ian Fleming/James Bond Books? All-in-All, British “Cloak & Dagger”Spy Fiction is THE Best!
Foyle’s War was the only series show I have watched faithfully, often postponing other engagements to watch the next episode. It was the best series for television to date. It is very likely that a replaying of the series would find a large, new audience and of course attract many of those who watched the show when it was originally broadcast would watch it again.
I love Foyle s war I have all episodes and still watch them
Outstanding
I’ll miss the series. But the WW2 theme was ending and probably hard to switch to the next generation plots needed. Such a list of character actors!
It should be renewed -an excellent series
Probably the best detective series ever. Just watched 1.1 again. But the premise is policing during wartime and that was exhausted and Foyle himself was beginning to age quite badly. So right time to end.
