If we don’t count the limited series, When We Rise, ABC introduced eight new TV series during the regular 2016-17 television season and cancelled five of them. Now they’re dispatching young Dr. Shaun Murphy on a house call, with the first season of The Good Doctor TV show. From House creator David Shore and Lost vet Daniel Dae Kim, the medical drama is based on a South Korean series of the same name. Can it find success in the U.S.? Will The Good Doctor be cancelled or renewed for season two? Stay tuned.
The Good Doctor stars Freddie Highmore, Antonia Thomas, Nicholas Gonzalez, Chuku Modu, Beau Garrett, Hill Harper, Tamlyn Tomita, and Richard Schiff. The ABC TV show centers on Dr. Shaun Murphy (Highmore), a new surgical resident with autism and savant syndrome. His incredible memory and keen ability to perceive spatial relations inform Shaun’s gifted comprehension of his patients. Meanwhile, his autism can hinder his ability to communicate with others. With only the help of his advocate, Dr. Aaron Glassman (Schiff), Shaun must challenge the skepticism and prejudices of the hospital’s board and medical staff, in order to do his job and save lives. **Update below.
The ratings are typically the best indication of a show’s likelihood of staying on the air. The higher the ratings (particularly in the 18-49 demo), the better the chances for survival. This chart will be updated as new ratings data becomes available — typically around 11:30am EST/8:30am PST. Refresh to see the latest.
3/27 update: You can see the latest night’s ratings in context.
Note: If you’re not seeing the updated charts, please try reloading the page. You can also see them here.
Note: These are the Live + Same Day Ratings which include “live” viewing plus delayed DVR viewing, up until 3am local time that same night. Ratings marked with an “*” are the fast affiliate ratings and will be updated with the Live+SD numbers when they are made available. Typically, networks get paid for C+3 ratings which includes DVR viewing within three days of the original airing when commercials are watched. Those numbers are rarely released to the press.
What do you think? Do you like The Good Doctor TV series on ABC? Should it be cancelled or renewed for a second season?
** 3/7 update: The Good Doctor is renewed for season two on ABC. Details here.
It was for me a good surprise. I will continue to watch, no doubts.
I really love this show. I hope ratings go through the roof! Awesome!
Will continue to watch.
But yeah, good book for sure!…good book!
This is us (part 2!) lol.
Just can’t get into This is Us…..enjoy The Good Doctor.
Great stuff!
It has been given a full season.
It is the only new show I look forward to, otherwise I watch TCM or TCM on demand, Showtime & once in a great while HBO on demand.
Outstanding series. I find myself not only rooting for him, but also eagerly anticipating how he is going to handle each challenge. Its like a good book. You think you’ll read a few pages before you go to sleep, and it grabs you so much before you know it the alarm is going off. If this gets cancelled when compared to so much of the junk now on television, it will be an injustice.
loved it
As an autistic person, I found that Shaun’s autism was handled much better than I expected. I didn’t like that he had savant syndrome, which is massively over-represented in fiction, but his sensory overload in the airport, his monotone voice, his stiff, precise way of doing things, and the way he frantically strokes his jacket to calm himself all rang very true to me. Also, I loved his communication style: blunt but not pointlessly rude, and willing to ask questions that would embarrass most people. Honestly, though, I wasn’t thrilled with most other aspects of the show. For one thing,… Read more »
loved the Korean one
Enjoyed the first episode and disagree with some of the more negative reviews.
Looking forward to more.
I really enjoyed the show. I will continue to watch it.
I really liked this show. It has a good story base to it. I will continue to watch it.
I could not believe how great last nights show was. I could have watched that all night. The acting was the greatest seen in a long time. I have a Nephew who has asburgerss and he is so smart and beautiful, better than his Aunt since I can’t spell asburgers. ThANK YOU
I am so happy I wanted the show to get big ratings and it got it. I hope it maintains such extraordinary numbers. DAVID SHORE – you did it again!!!
Please, please, please get better informed medical/technical advisors. The last episode has general surgeons/resident doing fetal surgery. There is no mention of perinatal/neonatal consult, pediatric surgery consult, cardiology consult etc. At least there was hospital board discussion but again most hospitals would have an ethicist also consulted particularly with the fictional hospital apparently being a Catholic hospital. I know it is only a TV show but to a physician it is insulting.
Dr V, You need to get over your self!! and try to enjoy the show for what it is, something worth watching for a change.
I really think it is Andrea Ford who needs to get more informed. Beside being a savant, with all the extraneous gestures he performs Shaun would not be a candidate for actually performing surgeries; he could perform all the great mental evaluations that we have seen, and make recommendations. I believe that actual adult autistic individuals would know enough about their eccentricities that they would not venture to perform surgery. Either the production company should develop a more realistic portrayal of an autistic physician or train actor Freddie H. to portray the role of a person who is able to… Read more »
I tend to agree. As a member of orthopedic and neurosurgical teams, I do believe the way they handle specialization is a bit too loosey goosey. That’s kind of how David Shore has always done things though, to great effect. Unfortunately, introducing a different specialist each episode would likely cut into a lot of the time spent on the dramatic focus of this medical drama. So for now I’m going to give it a pass and create a headcanon that this hospital is somehow so advanced and it’s physicians so competent that they each of them has licenses including all… Read more »
