A couple months ago, NBC premiered a new legal TV series from David E. Kelley called Harry’s Law. The series started out decently in the ratings but has fallen quite a bit since then. Tonight is the season finale. Will it be back for season two or end up cancelled?
Harry’s Law revolves around Harriet “Harry” Korn (Kathy Bates), a cranky former patent lawyer. She’s abruptly fired from a big firm, forcing Harry to search for a fresh start. She finds it when she meets Malcolm Davies (Aml Ameen), a college student who desperately needs her help and ends up working for her. A young legal hotshot named Adam Branch (Nate Corddry) accidentally hits Harry and gives up his corporate job to join the team. With the help of Harry’s footwear-obsessed assistant, Jenna (Brittany Snow), they open for business as Harriet’s Law and Fine Shoes.
The NBC series debuted in January with a 2.2 rating in the prized 18-49 demographic and 11.07 million viewers. That was an improvement of nearly 50% in the demo when compared to the last original episode of Chase, the previous timeslot occupant and NBC has had a hard time filling that spot for quite some time. The second episode only came down 5% to a 2.1 rating and 10.43 million. Week three held steady. It was looking like NBC had a hit — or as close as the network seems to get these days.
Then, the fourth installment took a big tumble, dropping 19% to a 1.7 demo rating and 9.22 million. It stayed at that level for a couple weeks, popped up to a 1.8 rating, and has most recently been holding steady at a 1.6 rating. That’s pretty close to what Chase had been doing and that’s all but cancelled.
Tonight marks the twelfth and final episode of the season and Harry’s Law is averaging a 1.8 rating and 9.54 million viewers. It’s the 10th highest rated scripted series on the network, tied with Chuck. On the other big networks, the series would certainly doomed but NBC has lots of ratings problems.
In truth, based on the demo numbers alone, NBC shouldn’t bring back this series for a second season. However, though it ranks towards the bottom of the demo rankings, it’s the most-watched TV show on the network. Though that doesn’t count for much, considering the state of NBC, it may be enough to get Harry’s Law a renewal.
On the other hand, with David E. Kelley likely having another series on NBC next season — the new Wonder Woman — network execs might prefer that he focus on that one and let Harry’s Law go. If they don’t like the Wonder Woman pilot, that may be enough to save Kathy Bates and company.
NBC probably won’t reveal the fate of Harry’s Law until the advertiser upfronts on May 16th. We’ll keep you posted.
What do you think? Should Harry’s Law be renewed or cancelled? If it does comes back, how would you suggest they change it to attract more viewers?

I really liked this show I think Kathy Bates is a superb actress I woldn’t change a thing The show had just enough comedy to tale some edge off of the serious aspects of the trials I enjoyed this show
I absolutely love “Harry’s Law!” The writing is very clever and Kathy Bates is wonderful.
The plethora of idiotic reality shows and silly sit-coms on TV today is disgusting. “Harry’s Law” is entertaining AND thought-provoking (the legal subjects are cutting-edge and timely) and I sincerely hope it will be given another chance to prove its worth.
harrys law is by far the best tv series on tv right now. dont cancelled.
It’s a great show! Leave it alone. The networks already blundered by cancelling Boston Legal. This is just a good.
The final would come in low because of the NCAA Championship game-DUH!We DVR ‘D the show because of the game. This happenned a few years back with The Black Donnellys. The stopped showing them because of the low ratings it got on Final Game night.
enjoy the show hope it will be back for season 2
Surely do hope ‘Harry’s Law’ will be renewed. The ensemble cast is great. I think they’re doing well in the ratings, considering they’re opposite CBS’s ‘Hawaii Five-O’.
Please do not cancel Harrys Law. It is by far the best new tv series to air in a long time. Kathy Bates is Awesome in her role. I can hardly believe the ratings dropped as everyone I know just raves about this show. I wouldn’t miss the program for anything or anybody. PLEASE, PLEASE,PLEASE,PLEASE DON’T CANCEL THIS SHOW. The show has a real essense of whats real and going on in the world today. It would be a real shame to cancel it.
I’m stunned to learn that anyone is even considering cancelling Harry’s Law. Please don’t! My friends and I look forward to each week’s show making the DVR’s set. I was initially drawn to it because of Kathy Bates – she is just the best and absolutely doesn’t disappoint. I like all of the regulars and was happy that we get to see Paul McCrane and Christopher McDonald for more than just one show. Please…at least one more season.
Please keep this show going! It is a great show and so well cast and acted and so real! It’s time to keep some good shows running and stop all the crap that is out there!
We thoroughly enjoy Harry’s Law. Not only is it entertaining but mentally challenging–wish we could tout other programs on television, but the caliber of writing, acting, and subject matter are sorely lacking. All of David Kelley’s programs have been, and continue to be, most thought -provoking , interesting and entertaining.
Please, renew Harry’s Law. It is a series we look forward to every Monday or pick up on Saturday, should we have to miss the first airing.
Most television is so boring and simplistic–his writing is a breath of fresh air.
Please, do not cancel Harry’s Law….for once there is a good show, and so it goes….they get axed. Take some of those bloody, horrible violent shows off.
Harry’s Law is the best thing NBC has going for it. Kathy Bates is an actor’s actor. The writing on the last few episodes has been less than stellar but the cast has carried the ball.
This is the only non- cable non- news show we make it a habit to catch each week. Without Leno and ” Harry” you might as well shut NBC down.
No, please don’t cancel this show. It is both drama and comic that only Kathy Bates can do. A wonderful show, I think it will a wonderful reviews next season.
please renew..there is so much garbage out there.good to have a show with drama and laughs…
I think Harry Law should definatly not be called off the air. It it very funny.
I tend to watch only ONE drama per TV season. As a straight man who likes strong female characters, I was a big fan of “Judging Amy”, and “Harry’s Law” is THIS season’s “serious show” for me. The only regular character I don’t care for is “Adam”. He’s too much of a wuss. Men should be men, even when they were ties and argue in courtrooms for a living. In real life, I don’t think either of his girlfriends (his ex- OR his ex-/current?) would be interested in him. He’s not the kind of guy who’d change a tire in… Read more »
Harry’s Law is awesome….please renew. Great writing, great characters.
