A couple months ago, NBC premiered a new legal TV series from David E. Kelley called Harry’s Law. The series started out decently in the ratings but has fallen quite a bit since then. Tonight is the season finale. Will it be back for season two or end up cancelled?
Harry’s Law revolves around Harriet “Harry” Korn (Kathy Bates), a cranky former patent lawyer. She’s abruptly fired from a big firm, forcing Harry to search for a fresh start. She finds it when she meets Malcolm Davies (Aml Ameen), a college student who desperately needs her help and ends up working for her. A young legal hotshot named Adam Branch (Nate Corddry) accidentally hits Harry and gives up his corporate job to join the team. With the help of Harry’s footwear-obsessed assistant, Jenna (Brittany Snow), they open for business as Harriet’s Law and Fine Shoes.
The NBC series debuted in January with a 2.2 rating in the prized 18-49 demographic and 11.07 million viewers. That was an improvement of nearly 50% in the demo when compared to the last original episode of Chase, the previous timeslot occupant and NBC has had a hard time filling that spot for quite some time. The second episode only came down 5% to a 2.1 rating and 10.43 million. Week three held steady. It was looking like NBC had a hit — or as close as the network seems to get these days.
Then, the fourth installment took a big tumble, dropping 19% to a 1.7 demo rating and 9.22 million. It stayed at that level for a couple weeks, popped up to a 1.8 rating, and has most recently been holding steady at a 1.6 rating. That’s pretty close to what Chase had been doing and that’s all but cancelled.
Tonight marks the twelfth and final episode of the season and Harry’s Law is averaging a 1.8 rating and 9.54 million viewers. It’s the 10th highest rated scripted series on the network, tied with Chuck. On the other big networks, the series would certainly doomed but NBC has lots of ratings problems.
In truth, based on the demo numbers alone, NBC shouldn’t bring back this series for a second season. However, though it ranks towards the bottom of the demo rankings, it’s the most-watched TV show on the network. Though that doesn’t count for much, considering the state of NBC, it may be enough to get Harry’s Law a renewal.
On the other hand, with David E. Kelley likely having another series on NBC next season — the new Wonder Woman — network execs might prefer that he focus on that one and let Harry’s Law go. If they don’t like the Wonder Woman pilot, that may be enough to save Kathy Bates and company.
NBC probably won’t reveal the fate of Harry’s Law until the advertiser upfronts on May 16th. We’ll keep you posted.
What do you think? Should Harry’s Law be renewed or cancelled? If it does comes back, how would you suggest they change it to attract more viewers?

THIS IS A GREAT SHOW PLEASE DO NOT CANCEL.
IT HAS GREAT STORY LINES. PLEASE KEEP HARRY ON!!!!
PS….your “reality shows” are no longer entertaining. They’re boring and not worthy of TV time. Thank you for listening????
DO NOT cancel this show. I just e-mailed my feelings to NBC. PLEASE pay attention to consumer comments. We desperately need entertainment on the National channels.. What we currently have to view is CRAP. Harry’s Law is not only entertaining, but right on regarding current events and our judicial system (unlike all the “other” law progams..yuk).
PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE do not take away the only entertainment on TV besides the cooking shows and HGTV!!!!!!!
I love this show. Kathy Bates is amazing.
The fact NBC keeps moving it is the issue. I never ever comment on any tv issues but THIS show is great . Please reconsider. Find a decent time slot and let it get a the followingit deserves, as did Boston Legal an the Practice. It isnt the show it is the network!
Love Harry’s Law, great characters. Was hoping maybe Denny Crain would make a special appearance on the show!!
I love this show. Please renew it. Thank you.
I can’t believe that Harry’s Law is being considered for cancellation. This show is the best. The actors are terrific and Kathy Bates is always outstanding. Please reconsider leaving this show on air. The plot always contains knowledge of law. Put the show in a time slot that people will follow. I can’t believe that reality shows trump a show this good.
plz keep harry on the air!!!!
I love this show… enough of the reality tv & comic book characters. It’s nice to see an older demographic show. Do not disbar Harry Corn.
We watch the show every week faithfully….There is hardly anything good on TV, why do they need to cancel something that is worth watching????? Please, please reconsider taking a good show off the air!!!!
Kathy Bates is wonderful in this show and we will continue to watch it if you bring it back…we will be looking forward to it!
My family LOVES Harry’s Law!!! It’s a WONDERFUL show that is actually thought provoking…..which is more than I can say for most shows on TV now!!
Can’t believe that Harry’s Law has been cancelled. This is a great show. I’m so sick of all the junk that’s on these days – all the stupid “so called” reality shows! We have an academy award winning actress and a great supporting cast. NBC – sure hope you hear from all of us who want this show returned!.
Harry’s Law is one of the smartest shows on network TV
It’s interesting and thought provoking,
I don’t fall in the TV domographic of viewers, but I actually have money to spend
NBC is making a big mistake, I’m less loyal to the network for making such a short sighted decision.
All of our family, 10 of them, are appalled that Harry’s Law is being cancelled. The disgusting shows that are allowed to be on TV are ridiculous. You finally have amazing actors, great story lines and a lesson in law. How to stand up for rights and challenge those who want to wrong you…what is wrong with your network, your producers. Put it back on during the week. the ratings fell because of the Sunday 7p.m. time and day, not because of the show itself. You are doing a disservice to all of us who like quality wholesome shows. For goodness sake, Harry’s Law is a terrific show. Don’t cancel this very compelling and intelligent show. To do so will lead to the continued dumbing down of this countries TV viewing.
How silly and unforgivable of NBC to have changed it’s time slot in the first place. Give this show a solid time slot and leave it there.
Cancelling this show would be a disservice to fans everywhere.
Thank you for listening.
