A couple months ago, NBC premiered a new legal TV series from David E. Kelley called Harry’s Law. The series started out decently in the ratings but has fallen quite a bit since then. Tonight is the season finale. Will it be back for season two or end up cancelled?
Harry’s Law revolves around Harriet “Harry” Korn (Kathy Bates), a cranky former patent lawyer. She’s abruptly fired from a big firm, forcing Harry to search for a fresh start. She finds it when she meets Malcolm Davies (Aml Ameen), a college student who desperately needs her help and ends up working for her. A young legal hotshot named Adam Branch (Nate Corddry) accidentally hits Harry and gives up his corporate job to join the team. With the help of Harry’s footwear-obsessed assistant, Jenna (Brittany Snow), they open for business as Harriet’s Law and Fine Shoes.
The NBC series debuted in January with a 2.2 rating in the prized 18-49 demographic and 11.07 million viewers. That was an improvement of nearly 50% in the demo when compared to the last original episode of Chase, the previous timeslot occupant and NBC has had a hard time filling that spot for quite some time. The second episode only came down 5% to a 2.1 rating and 10.43 million. Week three held steady. It was looking like NBC had a hit — or as close as the network seems to get these days.
Then, the fourth installment took a big tumble, dropping 19% to a 1.7 demo rating and 9.22 million. It stayed at that level for a couple weeks, popped up to a 1.8 rating, and has most recently been holding steady at a 1.6 rating. That’s pretty close to what Chase had been doing and that’s all but cancelled.
Tonight marks the twelfth and final episode of the season and Harry’s Law is averaging a 1.8 rating and 9.54 million viewers. It’s the 10th highest rated scripted series on the network, tied with Chuck. On the other big networks, the series would certainly doomed but NBC has lots of ratings problems.
In truth, based on the demo numbers alone, NBC shouldn’t bring back this series for a second season. However, though it ranks towards the bottom of the demo rankings, it’s the most-watched TV show on the network. Though that doesn’t count for much, considering the state of NBC, it may be enough to get Harry’s Law a renewal.
On the other hand, with David E. Kelley likely having another series on NBC next season — the new Wonder Woman — network execs might prefer that he focus on that one and let Harry’s Law go. If they don’t like the Wonder Woman pilot, that may be enough to save Kathy Bates and company.
NBC probably won’t reveal the fate of Harry’s Law until the advertiser upfronts on May 16th. We’ll keep you posted.
What do you think? Should Harry’s Law be renewed or cancelled? If it does comes back, how would you suggest they change it to attract more viewers?

Keep in going. Such a good show
Please do not cancel this show–it is definitely worth another season on the air! Also love Kathy Bates—(a great script)–very funny.
KEEP Harry!
its the best show on NBC
Kathy Bates brings a breath of fresh air to night time TV. Her one-liners are so cut to the chase. Love her sarcasm! “Harry” brings a freshness and human feeling to real-life type situations and how to get through them and help others in their time of need. Please do not cancel this series.
My wife and I really enjoy this show. We have not missed a single episode since it started. It’s funny, it’s sad, and it’s real. Sometimes lawyers win and other times they loose and Harry’s Law shows both sides of that coin. This is a good show . It deserves another season.
Really enjoy Harrys Law. One of the best shows airing this season. I heard the rumor of this show being cancelled. I hope not. Television these days are filled with the same mind numbing reality shows, same crime shows and some really mind numbing sitcoms. My vote is for Harrys Law.
The show is witty, entertaining & Kathy Bates is super. The show would be perfect except for Brittany Snow. Too much drama & upkeep, she adds nothing to the plot. I do hope Harry’s Law is renewed minus Brittany Snow.
Please save this wonderful series, if for nothing else then Kathy Bates and her crew. It may not be aqs good as Boston Legal, but let it grow and find its way. Besdies that Wonder Woman is going to be a travesty…this coming from a big wonder woman fan!
LONG LIVE Harry!
I loved “Boston Legal” but “Harry’s law” can definitely hold it’s own here! To get Cathy Bates for this was a freat “coup” — appreciate it NBC. Bring it back. This is the first series I have looked forward to coming home to in a long time.
NBC must renew this show. The reason they don’t succeed is the don’t support great shows like this. They should fire the execs. Maybe they should look at scheduling instead of cancelling.
would miss harry’s Law if not back for another season….love kathy Bates
Please do not cancel Harry’s Law. It is great to see a David E. Kelly show on the air again. Kathy Bates character allows the audience to see that not every female should be a size 2.
Harry’s Law is the best comedy/drama on TV! The cast is fantastic and it would be a shame to cancel this show. It’s great to have something that covers real issues and doesn’t depend on T & A to get good ratings.
I love love love this show. David E. Kelly never disappoints, the cast is great, especially Kathy Bates who is awesome in anything she does. If NBC doesn’t renew, I agree with the comment made above to have ABC show it in their 8:00 pm spot on Thursdays. I think the reason for the low rating is because it has to fight being on the same time as Castle. I love Castle also, but I DVR that.
Love to see another David E. Kelley show on the air…Harry’s Law is entertaining, thought provoking and just plain fun to watch. Please keep it on!
Love, Love, LOVE Harry’s Law, PLEASE don’t cancel the show – it’s one of the most creatively written shows I have seen in years! We need it!!!!
Harry’s Law is a great show. Good story line, great characters and well acted.
Hopefully NBC will not cancel this show. There are not many shows worth watching…I would really be disappointed if this one is canceled
