It looks like the doctor is out — for now. HBO has cancelled In Treatment after three seasons on the air. However, the cable channel may be interested in keeping the series going in another form.
Starring Gabriel Byrne as Dr. Paul Weston, In Treatment first aired in January 2008 and ran five nights a week. That didn’t perform as well as expected so it was reduced to two episodes twice a week for seasons two and three. While In Treatment has been a favorite with some critics, the ratings haven’t kept up. The season three finale, which aired in December, attracted just 253,000 viewers.
Byrne noted that the role was quite demanding in that it required him to memorize large amounts of dialogue in a short amount of time. He was nominated for two Emmy Awards and appeared in all 121 episodes of the series. Dianne Wiest won a supporting actress Emmy and Glynn Turman won in the guest actor category. In 2009, In Treatment won the WGA Award for best new series.
Though In Treatment may be done as a regular series, HBO is interested in a new incarnation. A statement from HBO states, “It’s true that we have no plans to continue with In Treatment as previously formatted. However, we are in continued conversations with the executive producers to find another way to continue telling these rich stories.”
What do you think? Are you sorry that there won’t be a fourth season of In Treatment? Would you like to see it continue in another form?

THE BEST SHOW I’VE SEEN IN YEARS. SHAME TO CANCEL IT – RIVETING, ABSORBING ETC. HOPE G. BYRNE IN NEW SHOW AT LEAST.
Really disappointed to hear that the show has been cancelled. It was so well acted but everyone and absolutely engrossing. I hope HBO reconsider !!!!!
I am sooooooooooooooooo disappointed to hear about this show being cancelled. It is a rare gem of a show with fantastic actors – Gabriel Byrne is incredible! And it had engaging storylines – real, honest, dialogue and authentic, deeply moving characters and with real life issues. It is not only entertaining and engaging but thought provoking. Watching the shows has had a a therapeutic effect for me at times, enabling me to identify and move some of my own issues. HBO needs to find bring it back in any form but it definitely needs to keep Gabriel Byrne and Dr.… Read more »
Really loved this show – Very, Very sad to see it ended. I enjoy Gabriel Byrne – is he being considered for the new version?
I did not know this show exsisted & discovered it from my friends posts on Face Book. I have a Degree in Social Psychology & have watched all three seasons now back to back. I am sadly disappointed that it will not continue. Our world NEEDS this kind of knowledge out and available to everyone, to allow therapy to become more accepted and common place in our ever increasing psychologically strained society. Great acting & actors…….Was the show advertised at all ?………. Please bring it back.
Completely agree. This show allows people into therapy sessions by proxy! Rivetting stuff because of it!!
I discovered this series on DVD and instantly became addicted. Brilliantly written and powerfully acted, these deeply moving shows reveal human beings at their most vulnerable. It’s a vulnerability we all share. As the saying goes, “The more personal it is, the more universal it is.” Gabriel Byrne is masterful in his role as Paul Weston; it’s impossible not to fall in love with him. For viewers who’ve had it up to here with superficial television, this series is a godsend. I sincerely hope HBO figures out a format that breathes new life into this show. Until then, I’ll be… Read more »
This was an intelligent, well acted show. How could HBO cancel it? Although it did not have mass appeal, I’m sure it had quality appeal. That is, smart, sophistocated viewers. Pat S.
IF “IN TREATMENT” IS CANCELLED,….THEN I GUESS I WILL BE FORCED TO “GO INTO TREATMENT” !!!!
THIS IS MY VERY FAVORITE SERIES OF “ALL TIME” .
AND REMEMBER,…I AM 68 YEARS OLD !!
GABRIEL BYRNE SPEAKS WITH HIS EYES AND HIS EXPRESSIONS !
I like Byrne….but he doesn’t KILL IT the way this person suggests…yet WHO ELSE? I have no idea. Probably the best chosen for sure! Still….I think it was the concept that did it for me!
Yes, I enjoyed ‘In Treatment’ very much. He could read from cue cards, couldn’t he?
I love the show and would miss it if pulled. I hope it does come back, but I think having new characters each year made the show, discovered stars like Mia, and gave others who have been around the block a chance to come back. I am not sure a new version focusing on just Paul is the way to go. His client’s had the best storylines, better than Paul’s. I understand the last season might not have been based on shows from the Israeli orignal. But I learned that after the show was over and didn’t notice before. Others… Read more »
Love this show. Please don’t let this disappear. Absolutely would love to see it come back in any form as well. We have grabbed the DVDs as soon as they are out.
I´m really sad about the show being cancel. There isn´t good series to watch on tv, they are all superficial. Once there is a very good serie with excelent actors and good and interesting stories to tell. What the hell am I going to watch now? I´m sure that they can find another format to continue with the program and maybe It can be better yet.
I would love to see them bring back some of the old patients, ie Oliver and some of the others who issues were never really resolved. Would make for a good follow-up to season’s one and two. Season Two was the best of them all.
I will truly miss this series, and look forward to it coming back in any way, shape or form.
I love, love, love this show. Unfortunately, I do not have HBO, but as soon as the DVDs of the previous seasons are released I grab them up and can’t watch them quick enough!!!!!
I hate the fact that it is going to be cancelled. There are too few good series on TV to lose a great one such as this.
