It looks like the doctor is out — for now. HBO has cancelled In Treatment after three seasons on the air. However, the cable channel may be interested in keeping the series going in another form.
Starring Gabriel Byrne as Dr. Paul Weston, In Treatment first aired in January 2008 and ran five nights a week. That didn’t perform as well as expected so it was reduced to two episodes twice a week for seasons two and three. While In Treatment has been a favorite with some critics, the ratings haven’t kept up. The season three finale, which aired in December, attracted just 253,000 viewers.
Byrne noted that the role was quite demanding in that it required him to memorize large amounts of dialogue in a short amount of time. He was nominated for two Emmy Awards and appeared in all 121 episodes of the series. Dianne Wiest won a supporting actress Emmy and Glynn Turman won in the guest actor category. In 2009, In Treatment won the WGA Award for best new series.
Though In Treatment may be done as a regular series, HBO is interested in a new incarnation. A statement from HBO states, “It’s true that we have no plans to continue with In Treatment as previously formatted. However, we are in continued conversations with the executive producers to find another way to continue telling these rich stories.”
What do you think? Are you sorry that there won’t be a fourth season of In Treatment? Would you like to see it continue in another form?

I hope season 4 will start at the beginning of the new year. Excellent cast, and material presented in sessions of in treatment.
I am terribly disappointed that this show was cancelled… although this post gives reason to hope it will be revived in some other format. This is one of the greatest TV shows ever, esp. season 3’s episodes with Paul’s therapist Adele. The dialogue and acting seem too good to be true. Dr. Gina Toll (Dianne Wiest), to deal with his own issues. Dr. Weston’s challenging new roster of clients this season includes Adele (Debra Winger), Frances (Amy Ryan),
We only got HBO for exceptional shows like “In treatment” and “Big Love”. These are thought provoking and intelligent. If HBO wants to attract people who want high quality shows then they must accept the fact that their audience may be limited. Non the less, there is more than enough dumb TV out there. Why is it that the British can produce so many highly intelligent programs and we produce so few? The Nielson Ratings are worthless. We participated in them recently and I’m sure they didn’t learn anything from us. Most people don’t answer the ratings properly or make… Read more »
I can’t believe that In Treatment has been cancelled. I watched all three seasons via Netflix, and I find the show fascinating & excellent acting. I particularly enjoyed Season 3, but I didn’t like the ending. If it does come back, I hope Paul & Adele hook up. They would be a great couple.
Soooooo disapointed that a series like this could’nt make it. I agree with Sally, I think I’ll
go back to disconecting HBO. The only reason I turned it on was for In Treatment. No
reason to keep it on now.
We are at least a dozen people who have watched In Treatment on TV or DVDs in English or in French since the beginning. We are very sad to hear it will not continue. This kind of serie is very helpful to those who wish to understand their lives and their relationships, to go further within themselves. Of course, it does not interest everybody. Could you bring back Dr Weston and company. I think that in the world we live in we need this kind of reflection.
In Treatment is one of the better series on TV. I looked forward to each new episode. I sincerely hope that HBO does indeed bring it back. Perhaps one episode per week would be more successful. The dynamic between Gabriel Byrne and Dianne Wiest is well worth watching. Whatever the format, a non negotiable would be Byrne and Wiest to go on with their roles.
We don’t get HBO here but I have just finished watching the last episode on DVD, from my library. I can’t believe it’s over!! Gabriel Byrne is a wonderful actor and I feel as if I know him…and would definitley seek out Paul as a therapist. Please bring him and his patients back…what a loss it will be to have them gone forever. I’ve learned so much from watching this series…about myself and about life.
We have watch all three seasons of In Treatment and found them to be SUPERB! The acting has been EXCELLENT!!!!! We are very disappointed to hear that the series has ended, but very happy to hear that you are considering continuing it in another form. We hope Gabriel Bryne will be lead once again -he is unbelievably talented.
We are hoping to see this new show you have spoken of available soon!!! In Treatment has been a show of a superb quality in acting and writing -a rare and welcome piece of art!!! Thank you!!!
Thank you creators of In Treatment for giving so much to many people. I cannot imagine the disappointment that can be felt by people who worked so hard on this. There must be a way to continue with the original series and I hope they don’t give up and don’t settle for anything less then the superb original. Byrne is a master who created addiction for the character of Dr. Paul Weston. The authenticity of all the characters is just wonderful. I am a writer and I am in psychoanalytic treatment, for both my activities In Treatment has been so… Read more »
A truly great series. I’m disappointed that there won’t be a 4th season. It was absolutely
engaging and complex; very deep. I will miss the stories and characters!
I have been waiting to see the next season I have been watching this show ever since its first season and I am sadden its not comming back on. I was wondering what would happen to Paul and you kinda left us hanging on what happen to that kid he was helping that was gay.
I have been anxiously awaiting the next season of In Treatment to begin, so I was disappointed to learn that it was canceled. I found this show to be one of my favorites. Each season offered issues that were thought provoking for every generation, not an easy task. It was an avenue for introspection as well as tolerance. I understand why the show did not garner the viewers to insure its success. People don’t neccessarily want to be enlightened or educated in matters of awareness when they sit down in front of the television set to be entertained. I think… Read more »
I almost never watch TV, nor do I buy videos and only occasionally do Netflix.
I bought all of In Treatment and have shared the videos with others, all of whom “became addicted.”
Extremely well-written, cast and acted, provides a good portal into a subject many find mysterious. If only more media could be so useful to the good of mankind.
I do not watch TV often, due to my hectic workload as a grad student of Professional Counseling. Paul is an inspiration as a therapist. I hang on his every word, and found merit in every episode. I even recommended the series to my class as a learning tool for ethical dilemmas at the very least. I have kept HBO only because of IN TREATMENT. I have been looking frantically for Season 4. It is a tragedy to discover it is not coming back. Now you know why I do not watch much TV. The epic shows rarely make it.
