After three seasons, ABC Family’s Kyle XY TV show is coming to an end. Will viewers get answers to the ongoing storylines about the young man without a belly button?
Kyle XY centers around a young man (Matt Dallas) who wakes up in the middle of a Seattle forest — naked and without a memory. The police call in psychologist Nicole Trager (Marguerite MacIntyre) for assistance and she ends up bringing him home. Her husband Stephen (Bruce Thomas), daughter Lori (April Matson), and son Josh (Jean-Luc Bilodeau) almost immediately take to “Kyle” and make him feel like part of the family. He begins to show incredible intelligence and physical abilities that lead the Tragers to realize there’s far more to Kyle than meets the eye. Others in the series include Chris Olivero, Kirsten Prout, Jaimie Alexander, Nicholas Lea, Chelan Simmons, Magda Apanowicz, Martin Cummins, Leah Cairns, J. Eddie Peck, Teryl Rothery, Conrad Coates, Cory Monteith, Josh Zuckerman, Kurt Max Runte, and Malcolm Stewart.
The show premiered on June 26, 2006 on ABC Family and became an instant hit. It attracted 2.6 million viewers and became the cable network’s highest-rated show to date. The pilot was repeated on ABC and over 5.2 million people watched. The first season was made up of 10 episodes and the show was quickly renewed for a second year.
Kyle continued to enjoy very healthy ratings into the second season. They were so good that ABC Family ended up ordering 23 episodes, a longer season than most series on the major networks. In May 2007, ABC Family president Paul Lee proudly said, “Kyle XY is the highest-rated show ever on ABC Family; it is truly the show that has defined this network.”

Unfortunately, that sunny outlook didn’t continue for very long once the ratings started to fall in the latter part of season two. Kyle’s third season’s premiere episode attracted just 1.5 million viewers and other ABC Family shows outperformed it by a wide margin.
ABC Family has just announced the renewal of two shows — Greek and Lincoln Heights — as well as the cancellation of Kyle. No details were given for the cancellation but the decline in ratings, higher production costs, and castmember contracts coming up for renewal are all believed to be contributing factors.
The third season of Kyle kicked off on January 12th and is expected to conclude on March 16th. It seems likely that the network will continue to air all of the episodes on schedule.
Because the series finale was shot well before the cancellation news came down, it seems unlikely that all of the show’s ongoing storylines will be resolved when the last episode airs. Will fans get the answers they’re looking for or will they be left hanging forever?

We got be organized people. In order to save this show we need to spread the word and tell others what ABC family is doing. But, unfortunately as far as I see signing petitions with a few thousand signatures isn’t going to work well or at all. Listen guys, ABC family is like any other network, they don’t care about people feelings and beliefs , as far as I’m concern they only care about two things RATINGS AND MONEY. Once one is gone the show is good as dead. One thing I learn from dealing with people is that if… Read more »
Please dont cancel Kyle xy. It is the best show on ABC family. All of my friends and family watch it. We cried when we found out it was canceled.
I can’t express how sad and upset I am over this news.
I have never tuned in every week to see a show like I have been doing for the past two years for Kyle XY.
I can’t stress how much I need this show to be picked up again. It’s my life…
There is nought else to be said except that KYLE XY is a brilliant, highly originally conceived, easily relatable show and the PERFECT, IDEAL programme for the family. Simple as that. Ratings speak nothing. People watch Kyle XY not just on TV but on online electronic sources too. There is simply no reason for KYLE XY to be cancelled and for ABC to not give us the fourth season that we, the faithful fans, so deserve. Cancelling Kyle XY before it even has had time for a complete, satisfying denouement is an utter outrage to all us fans out there… Read more »
It is a shame in an era where so much crap is being pushed as entertainment that when a series that is truly entertaining comes on the powers that be can’t see it. Ratings down??? Not the shows fault, how about advertising season 3 more than a week before it aired? Show too costly for ABC family? How about moving it to ABC. Kylie is a lot better than the new shows coming out and would carry a built in audience. You have a great show here people, don’t waste it!
my wife and i enjoyed this show very much we even taped it so we can watch it again, it is a clean cut family show and is enjoyed by us as well as our sister and friends who borrow the tapes when they miss the show. It is a great show and i have no idea why every time i get into a great show it is cancelled i really enjoyed dark angel when it was on years ago too and after three seasons it was cancelled the idea of these shows are similar what next heres or the… Read more »
Since Kyle and his friends and family are growing up, there’s little room for keeping the exact same configuration with the Trager family.
Declining audience may be an explanation, but harder to write story is a real reason.
I live in the UK and I have only seen season 2 and am waiting for next month when I can watch it on BBC 2. Several shows in the past have been auctioned up from TV channels for other Channels to buy and those shows have been saved.
The show, Point Pleasant went this way. It was canceled and we, the viewers, never got answers we are looking for. Please don’t let Kyle XY go this way…

I’ve just found out 2 of my favourite shows are being cancelled. I’m really not feeling very happy. I really want Kyle XY to continue. 🙁
Kyle XY is also the only show I watch on this channel. I wonder though if its just a bit too expensive for a small network like them to sustain?
Great premise for a show, great actors, and a great depiction of a loving American family and loving relationships!
Why don’t they cancel some of the crap on television instead of good shows?
Why is it being cancelled? It is a very good program. Keep it on the air!
