A new dramatic TV series on FOX, Lucifer created a bit of an uproar before it even premiered. The One Million Moms group wants the show to be cancelled and some religious people feel the same way. That’s not likely to have an effect on the show’s future but the ratings sure will. How’s the Lucifer TV show doing? Will it be cancelled or renewed for a second season?
On the Lucifer TV show, Lucifer Morningstar (Tom Ellis) has abandoned his throne and retired to Los Angeles. Charming, charismatic and devilishly handsome, he’s enjoying his retirement while owning a nightclub. His bliss is disturbed when a beautiful pop star is brutally murdered outside of his club. He starts to have feelings of compassion for the first time in billions of years and ends up helping a homicide detective (Lauren German). The rest of the cast includes Lesley-Ann Brandt, Kevin Alejandro, Rachael Harris, D. B. Woodside, and Scarlett Estevez.
The series debuted in January to a 2.43 rating in the 18-49 demographic with 7.16 million viewers. That was a very positive start, especially considering the state of the rest of FOX’s drama series.
In week two, the ratings fell to a 1.95 in the demo and 6.0 million viewers, a decline of nearly 20% in the demo. The numbers have essentially kept falling lower each week (though there was a slight bump upward in week seven). Last week’s installment, episode eight, hit a new low in the ratings and hit a 1.21 in the demo and 3.86 million.
The eight episodes have averaged a 1.63 rating in the 18-49 demographic with 5.08 million viewers.
The rest of the FOX schedule is in poor shape so it’s currently the network’s third-highest rated drama of the season (behind Empire and The X-Files). That may be enough to secure Lucifer a second season but it’s very concerning that the series continues to lose viewers. That may be enough to sink the series. We’ll likely have to wait until May to find out for sure.
But, what do you think? Do you like the Lucifer TV show? If you ran the network, would you cancel or keep it?
My son, 12, and I, 50, stumbled on the pilot of this show and haven’t missed an episode yet. We like it when he reveals his true appearance and the reactions he gets. Would like to see a bit more supernatural powers used. We’d definitely be very disappointed with a cancelation.
I think the fact that you “stumbled on the pilot” is part of the problem. I found out about it from my sister who gets TV Guide. I haven’t seen any other promotion of the series from the network. How do they think they’re going to get viewers. I see their point that they think they are losing viewers, but I’m very suspect of their calculation of ratings. There are too many different ways to watch shows: media streaming, recordings; one commenter said her friends all get together to watch it, which would only show 1 viewer instead of several.
An awesome show. I hope they don’t cancel it due to some naive groups
No don’t. why cancel it, it’s awesome, fun and kinda cute in a devlish way.
A KEEPER! Wonderfully refreshing to delve the psyche of the Devil himself…raw cynicism and self induced depravity mixed with a delicious hint of humanity makes Lucifer-Ellis wildly entertaining…I’ve grown rather fond of how the characters have unwittingly revealed their vulnerabilities by shedding a layer of pride and pretense one week at time.
I like the show. Given all the CRAP that is 99% of all current TV shows, Lucifer stands out because it actually has writing & plotting and good acting. (it does need better lighting tho-get a new lighting director! The real world is not constantly in obnoxious shadows!) The show is not a string of stupid one liner airhead jokes like so many. This is one show that should NOT be cancelled. It is as good as X Files, which should also continue, not that it is better. (X files is now, however, much better than the vintage original series).… Read more »
I love the show! I watch it online because I can’t watch 2 shows at once. It would be nice to see the girl cop show a little more emotion. It’s hard to care about a character when they seem so cold. I love seeing the changes in lucifer but still wish he was invincible .
Lucifer is awesome! Great show! Can’t wait for Monday nights so I can watch this show. Please do NOT cancel this show. It is one of the few shows worth watching! Tom Ellis plays Lucifer so well. Funny show. It’s a hit!
I am enjoying this show even more than I thought I would! The lead is highly entertaining, and I am equally happy when he’s funny as when he’s scary. I get why the network is concerned by the ratings, but canceling would be a mistake; anything they replace it with won’t be as good, and they don’t have much else going for them. I don’t think it’s fair to include The X-Files as a ratings comparison since it was a limited event with no immediate plans to continue. However, Fox has a well-established reputation for premature cancellation (Firefly, anyone? Almost… Read more »
Lucifer is a great show! Please keep it around. Have not missed an episode. Dark, funny and makes you feel for him as he works through ‘human’ emotions.
Ahhhh…please, pretty please, do not give in to any pressure to cancel this excellent show. It is fun to watch, and I just love the way Tom Ellis can convey emotions , just using facial expressions. Any more cancellations of a program we enjoy it will be no more regular television for me. Net flix….or such like , will be far less of a hassle, with more possibilities of viewers being considered as more than moronic individuals. So, do not cancel this fun program…..I love it.
I like this show because we’ve always herd the story of Lucifer banishment from the bibles point of view but we’ve never herd it from Lucifer himself. Plus the last episode is starting to show that even the worst of all fallen angels do have the ability to rise up again, especially with the help of another angel. And it shows that the one angel that we see on the show is falling somehow. I say keep the show just to send everyone the message of the whole series.
Love love love this show!!!! It rocks!!! KEEPER!
Just watched my first episode of Lucifer. It intrigued me enough to do some research and I discovered that it might get cancelled. Please no. I promise to keep watching. It’s very entertaining and has such a great deep message
Love the show!!!!!
Keep it, love this show.
