In July, production on NBC’s Parenthood was delayed due to Maura Tierney becoming ill. She eventually had to drop out of the project and Lauren Graham stepped in.
Because of the backstage issues, NBC delayed Parenthood’s Fall premiere and replaced it with a series that was scheduled for midseason, Mercy. Some wondered if having two new medical series might cause one to suffer. It turns out, Mercy and Trauma are both in critical condition.
Mercy follows the lives of three very different nurses at Mercy Hospital in Jersey City. The cast includes Taylor Schilling, Jaime Lee Kirchner, Michelle Trachtenberg, James Tupper, Diego Klattenhoff, Guillermo Diaz, James LeGros, James Van Der Beek, and Delroy Lindo.
The series got off to a mediocre start on September 23, 2009. The premiere attracted a 2.3 rating in the all-important 18-49 demographic and 8.25 million total viewers. That put the debut in fourth place for the demo and in second place for total viewers.
The second episode fell to a 2.1 rating and 7.35 million. The third installment dropped again to a 1.8 rating in the demo and 7.29 million viewers. Not good.
Though the show’s ratings could hardly be called strong, NBC gave Mercy a full season order in October. The rest of the network’s schedule was performing poorly and the order likely had most to do with the fact that NBC just needed original programming. It didn’t hurt that the series is a co-production of NBC’s corporate sister, Universal Media Studios.
Meanwhile, Trauma struggled from the very beginning and NBC pulled the plug after 13 episodes. But then, based on the need for more programming, the network ordered seven more installments. That show returns on March 8th but is a big longshot for renewal.
While Mercy was initially the better performer, the show’s ratings have now reached Trauma-like levels. The most recent episode of Mercy hit a series low with a dismal 1.4 rating in the demo and just 5.86 million viewers.
NBC’s Primetime Entertainment President Angela Bromstad recently said that she still loves the drama creatively, but she also noted that the show’s ratings need to rise for it to survive. She made that statement before Mercy fell to its most recent low.
The network has commissioned 18 pilots for the 2010-11 season and Bromstad has acknowledged that they’ll have to essentially rebuild their schedule from scratch.
With the ratings as poor as they are, it’s highly likely that Mercy will be cancelled and won’t survive to see a second year.
What do you think? Would you be sorry to see Mercy cancelled? Is it worth watching? Is there a reason that more viewers aren’t tuning in?

I only watched three shows this entire season…up from none for the last five years.
All three shows on NBC and all three are bing cancelled…Mercy, Trauma and Law & Order!
Forget it TV and especailly NBC, it will be back to zero soon!
Im hoping that Mercy comes on for a second season . Shoot! three of four , I love Mercy and the realization of the situations that the show has. It is far from a fairly tale and I can relate to Veronia in many ways. Please guys watch MERCY ! You will like it . Please bring Mercy back ………..
please donot cancel mercy, i love this show. it is almost like watching the old er. i have not enjoyed watching anything since the old er cast was on
Please dont axe Mercy I have watched every episode of the 1st and hopefully not only season and we really have to know what happened to Mike. I live in Scotland and it was my cousin who is a fan of most american shows who put me on to it and I fell in love with the show right from the start. Please don’t leave us fans hanging like this we dont just want more, we NEED more Mercy 😀
Please don’t cancel the show. I love it! Its my favorite show.
Keep Mercy, it is not the program but NBC’s scheduling this past season to accomodate the Jay Leno Show. Yes, Jay’s show, it messed up everything, including Law and Order, and Law & Order SVU. Programs need to be aired appropriately, not just scattered about to fill-up air time.
Keep Mercy, it is not their fault that there ratings are low, NBC had a xxxxx start. Yes, the Jay Leno Show at 10:00pm!!!!! Shows that should have been at 8:00pm, 9:00pm or 10:00pm were all scattered around to accomodate this one program. Not only the time slots, but the days the programs aired. Low ratings are not the fault of the progams, but NBC-this past season.
I love this show!!!! Please don’t cancel it – we have to find out what happened to Dr. Sands and Mike.
i love mercy please dont cancel it.mercy is one of the first hospital show i watch please keep it
I loved it. As a former ER nurse I can identify with so much. Please keep it on.
Well whee you you air it at the same time as American Idol of course it’s not going to do well. The nine o clock time slot seems better than the original 8 oclock. Keep it on…at least for another season! Has a lot of potential. Really like the characters and new story lines!!!
i love mercy!!!! i think it is one of the most true shows as far as nursing goes!!!! greys anatomy is a joke and i havent watched it in years…..if they cancel mercy i will refuse to watch nbc
Please I beg you to not cancel Mercy. I love the medical drama. And I dont even like hospitals in real life! I love the three main girls who we watch as their lives unfold. The love triangles and all of the other drama that follows behind. I dont see why people arent watching this fantastic show. I deeply enjoy it myself. I also like the guy doctors it puts a new twist to the show. I dont understand why Mercy isnt getting the ratings it should. Well I have an idea. I think its because the show wasnt promoted… Read more »
I don’t understand why Mercy has such low numbers as well. For me personally I am a nursing student and enjoy the show! There’s an estimated 2.9 million nurses in the U.S, and I know several nursing students that watch Mercy. I think it gives a great dramatization of what nurses due, minus the sex stuff. The only reason I can guess the show have low numbers is because it’s not the best night of the week. I actually have to watch Mercy on my computer because I’m swamped the night it airs. I pray the show stays too… the… Read more »
