In July, production on NBC’s Parenthood was delayed due to Maura Tierney becoming ill. She eventually had to drop out of the project and Lauren Graham stepped in.
Because of the backstage issues, NBC delayed Parenthood’s Fall premiere and replaced it with a series that was scheduled for midseason, Mercy. Some wondered if having two new medical series might cause one to suffer. It turns out, Mercy and Trauma are both in critical condition.
Mercy follows the lives of three very different nurses at Mercy Hospital in Jersey City. The cast includes Taylor Schilling, Jaime Lee Kirchner, Michelle Trachtenberg, James Tupper, Diego Klattenhoff, Guillermo Diaz, James LeGros, James Van Der Beek, and Delroy Lindo.
The series got off to a mediocre start on September 23, 2009. The premiere attracted a 2.3 rating in the all-important 18-49 demographic and 8.25 million total viewers. That put the debut in fourth place for the demo and in second place for total viewers.
The second episode fell to a 2.1 rating and 7.35 million. The third installment dropped again to a 1.8 rating in the demo and 7.29 million viewers. Not good.
Though the show’s ratings could hardly be called strong, NBC gave Mercy a full season order in October. The rest of the network’s schedule was performing poorly and the order likely had most to do with the fact that NBC just needed original programming. It didn’t hurt that the series is a co-production of NBC’s corporate sister, Universal Media Studios.
Meanwhile, Trauma struggled from the very beginning and NBC pulled the plug after 13 episodes. But then, based on the need for more programming, the network ordered seven more installments. That show returns on March 8th but is a big longshot for renewal.
While Mercy was initially the better performer, the show’s ratings have now reached Trauma-like levels. The most recent episode of Mercy hit a series low with a dismal 1.4 rating in the demo and just 5.86 million viewers.
NBC’s Primetime Entertainment President Angela Bromstad recently said that she still loves the drama creatively, but she also noted that the show’s ratings need to rise for it to survive. She made that statement before Mercy fell to its most recent low.
The network has commissioned 18 pilots for the 2010-11 season and Bromstad has acknowledged that they’ll have to essentially rebuild their schedule from scratch.
With the ratings as poor as they are, it’s highly likely that Mercy will be cancelled and won’t survive to see a second year.
What do you think? Would you be sorry to see Mercy cancelled? Is it worth watching? Is there a reason that more viewers aren’t tuning in?

No! My husband and I LOVE Mercy! NBC didn’t promote it at all, so we didn’t even think to watch it until about midway through the season, we gave it a shot, now love it. Plus, my co-workers watch it too, so we discuss it at work. It is ridiculous to cancel this show and let a dumb, cheesy show like Chuck continue on into oblivion.
Please dont cancel my whole family looks forward to this every week. I agree give it a chance! And dont leave us hanging
I agree with everyone else. Mercy has been great to watch since ER left. It took me about three episodes into this show to get hooked but I really enjoy the drama, the characters, and the situations they face. I look forward to watching it each week and want it to continue.
Mercy should not be cancelled its a rarity that there are any decent shows left on regular TV Network. It’s a shame that more folks tune into cheesey reality shows instead of a good Drama like Mercy.
please save Mercy. It is one of the better shows on NBC and should be given another chance. I think that people are wathcing American Idol on FOX at the same time, that is why the rating might be low. Maybe they should try changing the time or day it comes on. Since ER ended this has been my show, and I am in nursing school and it gives me great perpesctive on what is to come. Please do not cancel Mercy!!!
Mercy is a wonderful show!!! It is every good as ER was. PLEASE DO NOT CANCEL IT!!!!! We are a huge group that love it!!!
I am so disappointed that Mercy has been cancelled. Although there are several “doctor” shows on TV, Mercy was unique in that we got to see things from the nurse’s prespective, which I found to be refreshing. And let’s not forget the chemisty between Payne and Briggs.
Please don’t cancel this show!
KEEP MERCY ON
THE WORLD NEEDS A SHOW ABOUT NURSES AND STRONG WOMEN !!!!
I am totally disappointed they cancelled this show. It was the only thing i absolutely had to watch every week.
i LOVVVVVVVVVVVVVE Mercy! I look forward to Wednsdays just because of MERCY! PLEASE DO NOT CANCEL IT!!!!!!

PLEASE NBC, don’t cancel Mercy. It is my must see TV this year. Mercy and Trauma are two of the few shows my husband and I actually watch together. PLEASE reconsider.
This show is great! After ER ended they needed another medical show and this hit the spot! It would be nice however if they aired it later 8 is a little early for me. I like the 9 or 10 time frame better…..they really need to move it to later time slot and give the show a good shot at staying on.
I will be so dissapointed if Mercy is cancelled, I love that the characters are so neighborhood like, growing up in N.Y. I can relate to the characters so well, So many NYPD officers date nurses, Veronica and Mike are like so many people I know .Please don’t cancel it. My 15 yr. old son even loves it.
Sincerely, Cathy Defuso
Mercy has been my favorite show all season and when I just saw the new NBC line-up I was most devastated not to see it listed. I don’t understand it’s low ratings. The characters are great and the stories are interesting. Veronica needed to make a decision as it was getting a little tiresome. If, if fact, Chris has let for Afghanistan. that little problem may be solved. Or is it???? Please don’t cancel after only one season-give it a chance!!! There are lot of us out here who don’t care for Reality shows but do like the dramas, especially… Read more »
