In July, production on NBC’s Parenthood was delayed due to Maura Tierney becoming ill. She eventually had to drop out of the project and Lauren Graham stepped in.
Because of the backstage issues, NBC delayed Parenthood’s Fall premiere and replaced it with a series that was scheduled for midseason, Mercy. Some wondered if having two new medical series might cause one to suffer. It turns out, Mercy and Trauma are both in critical condition.
Mercy follows the lives of three very different nurses at Mercy Hospital in Jersey City. The cast includes Taylor Schilling, Jaime Lee Kirchner, Michelle Trachtenberg, James Tupper, Diego Klattenhoff, Guillermo Diaz, James LeGros, James Van Der Beek, and Delroy Lindo.
The series got off to a mediocre start on September 23, 2009. The premiere attracted a 2.3 rating in the all-important 18-49 demographic and 8.25 million total viewers. That put the debut in fourth place for the demo and in second place for total viewers.
The second episode fell to a 2.1 rating and 7.35 million. The third installment dropped again to a 1.8 rating in the demo and 7.29 million viewers. Not good.
Though the show’s ratings could hardly be called strong, NBC gave Mercy a full season order in October. The rest of the network’s schedule was performing poorly and the order likely had most to do with the fact that NBC just needed original programming. It didn’t hurt that the series is a co-production of NBC’s corporate sister, Universal Media Studios.
Meanwhile, Trauma struggled from the very beginning and NBC pulled the plug after 13 episodes. But then, based on the need for more programming, the network ordered seven more installments. That show returns on March 8th but is a big longshot for renewal.
While Mercy was initially the better performer, the show’s ratings have now reached Trauma-like levels. The most recent episode of Mercy hit a series low with a dismal 1.4 rating in the demo and just 5.86 million viewers.
NBC’s Primetime Entertainment President Angela Bromstad recently said that she still loves the drama creatively, but she also noted that the show’s ratings need to rise for it to survive. She made that statement before Mercy fell to its most recent low.
The network has commissioned 18 pilots for the 2010-11 season and Bromstad has acknowledged that they’ll have to essentially rebuild their schedule from scratch.
With the ratings as poor as they are, it’s highly likely that Mercy will be cancelled and won’t survive to see a second year.
What do you think? Would you be sorry to see Mercy cancelled? Is it worth watching? Is there a reason that more viewers aren’t tuning in?

NBC has always managed to carry a quality medical show from St. Elsewhere through ER and now Mercy. They gradually came to a good mix of interpersonal drama and actual medical situations during the season and created a pretty good show. C’mon, give ’em a chance! What else have you got?
I love this show, please give us a season 2. I have to know what happened to the guys, you cant leave it like that.
I absolutely LOOOOVVVVVVVEEEEEEE mercy. One of my favorite shows. I could watch it for dayss.. PLEASE do not cancel it. hopefully you guys actually read these comments..
WTF, first Trauma now Mercy. What are you guys thinking, I guess you need more room for reality shows. SUCKS….
PLEASE DON’T CANCEL MERCY!!! THIS WAS MY FAVORITE SHOW. I HAVEN’T BEEN ADDICTED TO A TV SHOW IN SO LONG SINCE IT’S NOW ALL REALITY TV. REALITY TV IS HORRIBLE. IT WAS NICE TO HAVE A GREAT SHOW LIKE THIS ON THE AIR. I DVR’D IT EVERY WEEK SINCE I WAS GOING TO SCHOOL ON WEDNESDAY NIGHTS. I AM ACTUALLY GOING TO SCHOOL FOR NURSING SO IT WAS GREAT TO SEE THIS SHOW. IT WAS ABOUT TIME THEY DID A SHOW THAT SHOWED THE NURSING SIDE OF THE HOSPITAL AND NOT JUST THE DOCTORS. PLEASE BRING IT BACK!!! PLUS GOTTA… Read more »
I ABSOLUTELY adore Mercy!!! It’s the best new show since ER!!! I REALLY hope it doesn’t get cancelled!!! It would be a loss for nurses everywhere. A comedic / dramatic view of potential hospital situations that we can escape to! (and laugh at!)
Another great show that NBC just throws away.
I wish you would reconsider about canceling the show. I love Mercy. I dvr the show and watched it later in the evening. Lots of people did that due to it being on the same time american idol was on. It’s not fair that you only judged who watched during the live tv not considering that it may be dvr by many. Please don’t cancel this show.
i certainly think mercy should be back. It’s fun, exciting, romantic. Second season would be very appreciated. just don’t kill the husband and hopefully doctor iraq wasn’t killled in the plain crash.. hmmm…
love to see sonia go back to her police sweetheart
and I can’t wait seeing chloe back with the RN, MD title..:) awesome. like to see some conflict in there and stuff..
I absolutely love Mercy, my WHOLE family watches it and we would be soooo sad if Mercy were cancelled. Give it a shot for a second season. Please, it’s a great show, and we need to know what happens!
I LOVE LOVE LOVE MERCY! YOU CAN’T CANCEL IT!! I WAS BLOWN AWAY BY THE SEASON FINALE AND I WANT MORE. MAYBE TRY A DIFFERENT DAY/TIME??? PLEASE DONT CANCEL!!!
Please give me more “Mercy”. It’s the 1st show that I’ve really enjoyed since “Homocide: Life on the Street” left the air. These are interesting characters that should be nurtured and rounded out in a second season. I care about these people.
I personally like the show Mercy. I really didnt think but had a feeling it would get cancelled. But the show started to pick up in the middle. I dvr’d every show and was mad when it was time for the season finale, I felt there was so much more needed. I think it would be a great idea to give it a second season…
I LOVE MERCY, I DVR it and watch it later that evening – I laugh the entire hour. NBC cannot cancel it, just change the day and time. They seem to cancel every great show that I get attached to, but leave the stupid game shows or reality shows on – come on please give it another chance……..MERCY ROCKS!!!!
this last week NBC had a god awful fill in ‘drama’ about different people being kept in a town and not knowing why. What a poor excuse for a fill in. Mercy was one of my favorite shows. Give it another try or run the whole series this summer. I would like to watch it thru because I missed sosme.
Chris…The name of that “God Awufl fill in drama” as you call it, was “Persons Unknown”. Sheesh! Give it a chance. There has only been one episode, and personally I liked it. It is not taking the place of Mercy, AND it is just a mini-series that was not intended to stay on (just like Harpers Island last year). At least it wasn’t another stupid reality show. People keep asking if NBC counts DVRing Mercy. I think they do, BUT what about those who don’t have a DVR and record on their VHR or DVD recorder? Those they CAN’T count.… Read more »
