In July, production on NBC’s Parenthood was delayed due to Maura Tierney becoming ill. She eventually had to drop out of the project and Lauren Graham stepped in.
Because of the backstage issues, NBC delayed Parenthood’s Fall premiere and replaced it with a series that was scheduled for midseason, Mercy. Some wondered if having two new medical series might cause one to suffer. It turns out, Mercy and Trauma are both in critical condition.
Mercy follows the lives of three very different nurses at Mercy Hospital in Jersey City. The cast includes Taylor Schilling, Jaime Lee Kirchner, Michelle Trachtenberg, James Tupper, Diego Klattenhoff, Guillermo Diaz, James LeGros, James Van Der Beek, and Delroy Lindo.
The series got off to a mediocre start on September 23, 2009. The premiere attracted a 2.3 rating in the all-important 18-49 demographic and 8.25 million total viewers. That put the debut in fourth place for the demo and in second place for total viewers.
The second episode fell to a 2.1 rating and 7.35 million. The third installment dropped again to a 1.8 rating in the demo and 7.29 million viewers. Not good.
Though the show’s ratings could hardly be called strong, NBC gave Mercy a full season order in October. The rest of the network’s schedule was performing poorly and the order likely had most to do with the fact that NBC just needed original programming. It didn’t hurt that the series is a co-production of NBC’s corporate sister, Universal Media Studios.
Meanwhile, Trauma struggled from the very beginning and NBC pulled the plug after 13 episodes. But then, based on the need for more programming, the network ordered seven more installments. That show returns on March 8th but is a big longshot for renewal.
While Mercy was initially the better performer, the show’s ratings have now reached Trauma-like levels. The most recent episode of Mercy hit a series low with a dismal 1.4 rating in the demo and just 5.86 million viewers.
NBC’s Primetime Entertainment President Angela Bromstad recently said that she still loves the drama creatively, but she also noted that the show’s ratings need to rise for it to survive. She made that statement before Mercy fell to its most recent low.
The network has commissioned 18 pilots for the 2010-11 season and Bromstad has acknowledged that they’ll have to essentially rebuild their schedule from scratch.
With the ratings as poor as they are, it’s highly likely that Mercy will be cancelled and won’t survive to see a second year.
What do you think? Would you be sorry to see Mercy cancelled? Is it worth watching? Is there a reason that more viewers aren’t tuning in?

mercy was awesome… please don’t cancel it… it’s my favorite.
I LOVE Mercy!!!! It was the one show that I would get really really upset if I missed. Even more so than Lost and Survivor. I will be absolutely disappointed if it doesn’t come back I may actually cry. (Well… probably not) I will miss this show dearly and would love to see it again this fall if a miracle were to happen.
Sadly, I just found out that NBC did indeed decide to cancel Mercy on May 14, which is a shame since they didn’t wrap up the show properly and clearly disappointed many people (myself included). I plan on contacting NBC and telling them they just cancelled a great show. Maybe if enough people do the same they may consider bringing the show back? Maybe or maybe not, but either way, the fans can still make themselves heard.
NBC should just cancel themselves , give Mercy a chance at least one more season to see if the ratings can go up, NBC seems to like to run a show for 1 season just when people are starting to enjoy it then they steal it back. Why should we give any new and upcoming shows a chance if they will just be taken away? NBC sucks toe jam.
I LOVE Mercy!!! I will be extremely upset if it is canceled!!!! It is an amazing show!!!!! Pleas do NOT cancel it!!!!!
Please, please, please ! Bring Mercy back !
This TV Show is very great to look !
I think you should make the second season ! I want to see more and more episodes of Mercy !
Please, please, please ! Bring it back !
Please save this show…. Soon I will have nothing worth watching. 8 of my shows have been cancelled. I guess I’m gonna have to turn to netflix…sigh…
To Jerry…I don’t expect you to know about KINGS because of the poor advertising and marketing of the show. That is why I gave a small overlook of the Show KINGS. And yes I do agree that the network is “canceling everything right away.”
And I thinking about doing the same. I am going to stop watching NBC. Unless they bring back KINGS, AND Mercy back.
I am not fan, just an average person who watches shows time to time. It was a Good. Hey at least they gave it a “chance.” Unlike the way they treated their NBC tv show KINGS. In KINGS, I saw VERY little advertisement for the show. Plus it got canceled by the 4th episode. NBC KINGS is such a Great, gorgeous show, that has love, power, corruption, everything to tell a good tale. It was glorious and great all the way till the 12 and final episode. Almost every episode had a thrill. In my opinion, KINGS is better than… Read more »
To Hugo….I never heard of KINGS! Maybe because it was cancelled right away like everything this station does! Anyway, anything that is put up against Dancing with the Stars, So you Think you Can Dance, or Survivor will not stand a chance. I have to record most of the shows I like and watch them later. Eveyone cant do that! As I said before, I am done with this network. I won’t be watching any of their new shows, and many others wont either. We are all scared that they will suck us in, and then cancel after one or… Read more »
I think Mercy is a great show and it should definately come back!
I LOVE MERCY! There are very few shows I watch since I work third shift but I NEVER missed Mercy. I would really be disappointed if they took it off.
I hope that you do not cancel Mercy or Trauma. They are two shows that I look forward to watching with my husband and I will be very disapointed. We both love the two shows. I always DVR if I can’t watch. PLEASE!!!!!!keep it on your lineup.
I think NBC is quite dumb, in 2009 they tried to cancel Medium, but Medium already had 5 seasons and CBS loved it (and still loves it), so it got sold (Gosh, I can’t understand they cancelled The Ghost Whisperer, Medium & the GW looks great together). Now they are even dumber, a brand new show, with only ONE season, is going to disappear because they think the ratings are low. Hello?! The first season has always low ratings, and still many people like it. Really, NBC is going crazy. On the Saturday schedule they say: L&O: SVU and a… Read more »

Please bring it back!! More episodes, more, more please!
Mercy was a great show. Never missed an episode. It was the only good thing NBC had going. PLEASE BRING IT BACK!
