It seems the fat lady is warming up. While it is not technically “cancelled,” CMT has announced its Nashville TV show will end with the upcoming sixth season. The country music cable network originally picked up the drama, when ABC cancelled it after four seasons. Although the exact release date has not yet been set, CMT has announced the sixth and final season of Nashville will premiere in January of 2018.
A CMT original series, Nashville stars Hayden Panettiere, Charles Esten, Clare Bowen, Sam Palladio, Chris Carmack, Jonathan Jackson, Lennon Stella, and Maisy Stella. Connie Britton exited the starring role of Rayna James, during season five. The drama centers on the lives and careers of country music superstars, including Juliette Barnes (Panettiere), as well as the up-and-coming performers and songwriters trying to get ahead in the business.
Nashville: A Look at the Ratings
The fifth season of Nashville averaged a 0.19 rating in the 18-49 demographic and 815,000 viewers. Compared to season four on ABC, Nashville was down by 80% in the demo and down by 81% in viewers. Still, it was the highest rated scripted TV series on CMT.
Nashville to End with Season Six as CMT Moves to Unscripted TV Series
Today, CMT also cancelled its Still the King TV series. The cable channel is abandoning its fledgling scripted programming slate, in favor of unscripted originals, as parent company Viacom tweaks the focus of several of its networks. Deadline reports:
…Nashville became an outlier at CMT, which shifted its programming strategy in the Viacom restructuring earlier this year, focusing on unscripted fare, which is significantly cheaper than scripted. Nashville, produced by Lionsgate TV, Opry Entertainment and ABC Studios, is the only scripted series on CMT. One of its biggest champions, CMT head of development Jayson Dinsmore who orchestrated the pickup after the cancellation by ABC, recently left the network. CMT is already prepping an unscripted Nashville successor with the upcoming docu-series Music City.
“All of us on Nashville are so incredibly grateful to the show’s fans, who convinced CMT to give us a chance to keep telling the story of these remarkable characters,” said executive producer Marshall Herskovitz. “And we want to return the favor with a final season that celebrates all the joys and passions, twists and turns — and amazing music! — that made Nashville such an exciting journey for the last six years.”

“After more than 120 episodes of unforgettable television, we believe that creatively it is time for the series to come to its triumphant close at the end of the upcoming season,” said Kevin Beggs, Chairman of the Lionsgate Television Group. “We’re very proud of our incredibly talented cast and crew, the creative brilliance of our showrunners, and the loyal support of our great partners at CMT, Hulu and ABC Studios. Most importantly, we owe a special debt of thanks to the Nashville fans who propelled the series to an incredible run. We owe it to them to make the 6th season the most exciting and memorable of all.”
What do you think? Is the sixth season the right time to end the Nashville TV series’ run? Should CMT have cancelled or renewed Nashville for a seventh season? Sound off, below.
They take all the good shows off..Let Hulu take it over
Please don’t cancel Nashville!! It’s the only show worth watching these days. I was so excited for January to get here, to watch it again. Now now I hear about a few episodes that it’s being cancelled yet AGAIN! If you were only going to tease viewers for 1 season, I wished you would’ve just left it alone when Rayna died!
I hope you all will rethink this decision & keep it on!
Wonderful music – definitely.
I am totally disappointed and angry that they are cancelling this show. All the networks are full of shows with nothing but murder, violence, racism crap, and the disgusting reality shows. Its no wonder our world is so screwed up with violence!! Nashville was such an enjoyable show to watch, with the wonderful music and talented actors and actress. I will probably end up canceling cable. As this show was the main reason I kept it. I don’t understand why they are canceling it??? We need shows like this. ABC should never of taken it off. They should of given… Read more »
I detest reality shows and sitcoms. The only left will be the NBA otherwise the TV would be permanently unplugged.
Show should stay on for many seasons to come!
Im disappointed that CMT has decided to cancel the show Nashville……The show had a good story line, great actors along with the music. I believe that CMT will lose a lot of viewers.
Real bummer CMT-is one of the best shows you have going for you and again you decide to remove shows we all like and actually involved in-so that being said you will lose me as a viewer and allot of friends-really a dumb move folks—-
Good. I could not finish S5. The series lost something when it moved CMT and I’m not talking about Rayna.
That’s sucks for sure. This show is so good and the acting and actors as well. Can’t believe it’s happening again. Good shows never get a chance. I will miss it very much.
Now we know why CMT didn’t make an offer to continue LAST MAN STANDING.
This really sucks….one of the best shows around!! The music, the actors! I really hope this doesn’t happen! ONE of the best shows that thank god got picked up by CMT! So disappointing if it doesn’t come back! Not sure how they do their demographics….but must not be lookin in the right place!
What a bummer!!! This is one of my favorite shows. The entire cast is outstanding. GREAT music (and I am NOT a country music fan at all!!!). I’m so disappointed, but also grateful to CMT for picking it up from ABC in the first place. I just wish CMT would continue it.
They ought to make a special demographic for people over 49 and include that in their ratings.
I’m devastated I was upset when ABC dropped Nashville but so happy when CMT picked it up, this is very discouraging, By by Nashville!!
Of course, Nashville will be cancelled. Most of the really good tv shows are terminated before their time. The talent on the show is exceptional. Combining wonderful music with exciting story lines is a winning combination. I guess the millenials are a fickle lot. Some of us from an earlier generation appreciate good programming. I will not be watching CW anymore.
This is devastating news…..Nashville is one of the BEST drams, with the BEST music. I love it so much – I had to switch carriers in order to get CMT. It cost me much more, but I could not live without Nashville. I am so sorry to see it end. Maybe Netflix will pick it up????
