At the recent upfronts, it was announced that CBS was cancelling The New Adventures of Old Christine after five years on the air.
Starring Julia Louis-Dreyfus, the sitcom has been in danger of being cancelled each year and, on a few occasions, ABC expressed interest in taking it over. Though it’s looking doubtful that the alphabet network will indeed save it, discussions are still ongoing.
Kari Lizer, Old Chrisine’s creator, says that the cancellation didn’t surprise her, especially considering the fact that the show was taken out of the Monday night block of sitcoms and has been put on hiatus many times during its run.
She recently told TV Guide, “As far as what happened at CBS, we’ve suffered from a serious lack of support from them since the beginning… I hate to say it, but I’m afraid they don’t care much for the female-of-a-certain-age point of view over there. How else do you explain them squandering the talents of Julia [Louis-Dreyfus] and Wanda [Sykes]?”
The cancellation news came at a particularly bad time for Sykes. Her Saturday night talk series, The Wanda Sykes Show, was also cancelled by FOX. Lizer expects Sykes to bounce back though, noting, “She’s never funnier than when she’s pissed off.”
What do you think? Is CBS’ treatment of Old Christine some kind of sexism or just due to poor ratings?

That show was a top 15 funniest written show. They really need to bring it back and put it before…between Rules, How I & broke TV line up. Sexism??? CBS apparently doesn’t make enough money…..because they choose nonsense over what’s actually funny. The new adventures of old Christine can actually be Turned into A movie or a Broadway play. It was that good. I’m just saying. Bad DOG(CBS)!!
this show is freaking hilarious bad judgement in taking this off wish i had $$ i would put this back on air asap right after big bang theory!!
I love this show and continue to watch the reruns and I have almost the whole collection on DVD. I believe the show was canceled because of sexism. CBS moved this show or put it on hiatus so many times I never knew when it was on. Hands down the show was just hilarious, too bad CBS couldn’t see that.
I loved the show and cast. I don’t think it would be over bad ratings, as much as miving it around constantly changing the time slots. A lot of times there have been goid shows cancelled because of being in a bad time alot. I myself and many of my friends also like
I love this show! I watch the reruns over and over! They need to bring it back! Its the funniest show I have watched. The whole cast is full of great talent!
I really enjoyed this comedy, old Chrifstine always makes me laugh she reminds me of me, I don’t feel alone wish they wouldn’t cancellation her, I haven’t enjoyed a comedy in such a long time.nothing ever stays showing very long, I hate the reality shows, I think they .get in the way of good evjust wish i had a friend like old chrristine
I know this is an ancient article, but I’m still mad this incredibly funny show with a FANTASTIC ensemble cast was stupidly cancelled by those idiots at CBS.
I am a 52 year old male and still think it’s about the funniest thing on TV next to old Seinfeld re-runs. Who is in charge of this stuff? Such a shame that the show is gone and I’m trying to find it on Lifetime, Ion and other lame channels… Julia, Wanda and the rest of that cast deserved much better treatment.
SHAME ON CBS!
agreed. (good point about seinfeld, although that caused me to reflect on the serious lack of talent regarding tv shows. …and that i waste a lot of bloody time watching tv ….)
I loved the show, I was looking all over T.V. I wanted to record the program, what is the sexism angle. I must be in the category of people who get it. I’m 55 yrs and a single mother and I remember the harships raising two boys and working full time. I agree with Monica, mature comedy is a thing of the past. There are other shows to cancel like the kardashion and BooBoo. They should look back when they fired Charlie Sheen, the show never recovered and I and others only watch the re-runs including my 84yr. mother.
This was a great show, with outstanding comedic talents among all the characters. Whoever decided it should be cancelled, and replace it with something lame, needs to rethink things. I still watch the shows in reruns whenever I can. I just got Season 1 on DVD for Christmas. This true-to-life comedy was a rare gem.
This is like the 1 millionth time I’ve had to read about how sexist CBS is, right down to the people they let go from their shows (CSI NY, Criminal Minds etc.) They need a bull to run through that building (or maybe a cow).
We still enjoy this in re-runs. This is an extremely funny show and it’s a shame it was cancelled…considering some of the other shows that are still on these days. They should seriously consider bringing this back…with the same cast…they were great together.
I thought this show was the funniest sitcom as far as I’ve seen, I’m sad that its cancelled :'( I’m extremley picky when it comes to sitcoms, this one was so funny cause it the situations where believable & the the cast delivered! Tskkk tsskk on cbs I guess it’s their loss
One of the funniest sitcoms I have watched. I can relate to her character, and it’s just plain funny. I do not understand canceling the show either!! I had been looking for the show, and was told it had gone off air, such a disappointment. I watch the reruns anytime I can catch them. What has happened to real TV? Guess there is more interest these days in useless reality shows. Hillbilly Hand Fishing, Honey Boo Boo…pleeeez
I agree Monica, Adv. of Old Christine was awesome I watch it every night as long as I could stay up and whenever it’s on I just watch it. it’s sad what a great show. I’m confused really. two key phenomenal actresses and great supporting characters amazing. sad it’s off! that show should be back on now! I also watch VEEP, to catch her humor.
I really love this show and am baffled by its cancellation. I fight sleep just to watch it in late night reruns. It’s a shame that something as asinine as Big Brother is in its millionth season, while truly talented, professionally funny personalities are discarded. Sadly, mature comedy is a thing of the past.
I also fight sleep just to catch the re-runs of Christine ! LOVE THE SHOW ! There are very few good sitcoms out now , when I think back 5-10yrs thats about all there was and for ppl that do not have cable or a dish it is hard to find things that are good to watch ! In my area it is on sometimes 6 or 7 days a week but around 3am , but I make sure to watch. The funny thing is that I did not watch when it was not in sindicate but inoy it now… Read more »
