At the recent upfronts, it was announced that CBS was cancelling The New Adventures of Old Christine after five years on the air.
Starring Julia Louis-Dreyfus, the sitcom has been in danger of being cancelled each year and, on a few occasions, ABC expressed interest in taking it over. Though it’s looking doubtful that the alphabet network will indeed save it, discussions are still ongoing.
Kari Lizer, Old Chrisine’s creator, says that the cancellation didn’t surprise her, especially considering the fact that the show was taken out of the Monday night block of sitcoms and has been put on hiatus many times during its run.
She recently told TV Guide, “As far as what happened at CBS, we’ve suffered from a serious lack of support from them since the beginning… I hate to say it, but I’m afraid they don’t care much for the female-of-a-certain-age point of view over there. How else do you explain them squandering the talents of Julia [Louis-Dreyfus] and Wanda [Sykes]?”
The cancellation news came at a particularly bad time for Sykes. Her Saturday night talk series, The Wanda Sykes Show, was also cancelled by FOX. Lizer expects Sykes to bounce back though, noting, “She’s never funnier than when she’s pissed off.”
What do you think? Is CBS’ treatment of Old Christine some kind of sexism or just due to poor ratings?

Please ABC, pick it up and run with it!!! The best show on TV!!!
This is the most upsetting thing I heard since Seinfeld decided to end. This is a real bummer and a huge loss to our entertainment. This show was the perfect mix of characters and the perfect actors to be them. I will buy the entire series and watch it repeatedly. Why don’t these big corporate networks try asking us what we want?
I will miss it Old Christine was like a modern day I love Lucy—Dreyfus & Sykes are hilarious.
I can’t believe it’s cancelled. Please ABC pick it up. My husband and I both loved this show. It’s one of the only shows he would actually sit down with me and watch that wasn’t a “guy” show. Julia and Wanda together were hysterical!
one of my favs didnt know was cancelled and realized was on my dvr ever!
What the heck is tv coming to these days? Too many breaks makes you lose track of the shows your interested in. This show will be missed it was light and funny. I hope ABC picks it up and socks it to CBS.
I’ve been waiting for this show to come back, too, now I found out it’s been cancelled! I’m so disappointed. It was my favorite sitcom, so funny, the only one that made me laugh! Didn’t Julia Louis-Drefus win some sort of award for this show?
bummed out, bring this show back!
I have been waiting for it to return and just found out it was canceled. Please bring it back it was my favorite sitcom. It was the only one that made me lol.
I agree with Melissa! All the good shows are gone. I read that it was cancelled because CBS didn’t think the middle-age woman was interesting. But that’s why I loved it. It was true to life. I also like to end my day with happy thoughts which is why I seek a good comedy. Reality shows have nothing to do with reality and it’s so morbid that homicide/crime shows are constantly on. We all need a good laugh!!!
Love the show please bring it back. please
I don’t know why it was cancelled but am very disappointed. My husband and I loved that show as did our friends. Everytime we find something we enjoy on T.V it’s gone. At the end of hard day I like to laugh. Not watch the so called “reality” shows which just bring out the worst in people. As far as I’m concerned Monday- Friday there may be one or two shows we enjoy watching Yes, I know there are otherthings than T.V like reading, exercise etc. and I enjoy those things. I also like to save money and relax in… Read more »
