We’ve received quite a few e-mails from readers who are been worried that Parenthood has been cancelled by NBC. Well, it hasn’t been canned and will actually be returning on January 4th. That’s the good news but fans shouldn’t get too complacent. The drama hasn’t been performing all that well and certainly isn’t assured of a third season.
Last May, Parenthood was one of those shows that was “on the bubble” but still ended up being renewed. Though season one premiered with a 3.1 rating in the coveted 18-49 demographic and 8.1 million viewers, it soon after dropped to a 2.3 rating and 5.83 million viewers. The 13 episodes of season one ended up averaging a 2.6 in the demo and 6.38 million total viewers.
For season two, Parenthood debuted at about the same demo rating it had at the end of season one. Unfortunately, that didn’t last. In mid-November, shortly before it went on hiatus, Parenthood hit a series low of a 1.8 rating in the 18-49 demo and 4.8 million viewers.
The first half of the season has averaged a 2.1 in the demo and 5.22 million. Parenthood is currently the seventh-highest rated scripted program on the network, falling in the middle of the list, just below The Event. While it’s not in immediate danger of being cancelled, the show’s certainly not safe either. Its fate will ultimately be decided by how well it performs when it returns from the six week hiatus. Most shows don’t typically fare very well and ratings drop after a hiatus. Will Parenthood be the exception?
What do you think? Will the ratings for Parenthood go up or down? Will it be cancelled or survive to see season three?

PARENTHOOD is quality television….. excellent writing, acting and actors. I hope someone has the good sense not to cancel such a special program. I just watched the episode from March 1, 2011 and was mesmerized by the “specialness” of the program. PLEASE DON’T CANCEL PARENTHOOD.
Please don’t cancel Parenthood! My husband and I have a 23 year old son with Aspergers Syndrome along with a 16 year old daughter. The actors portray their characters so well it sometime feels we are viewing our own family’s lives past and future! The actor Max B. plays a young boy with autism so well, it’s hard to believe he is acting at all! It is refreshing to watch a show that depicts so well what many families may struggles with; job security, learning disabilities , sibling conflicts, parents. Best of all, the show brilliantly reveals that families can… Read more »
We have been so refreshed by the PARENTHOOD story lines and variety of family issuesit presents. PLEASE don’t take it off the air. It is the only show that my husband and I puposefully set aside time to watch. We DVR it every week just in case we don’t sit down on time and so we can re-play the unbelievable & exciting scenes of family drama. NBC has done a great job selecting the perfect group of actors. We just love it!
I am 73 years old, have raised 2 boys and 2 girls and Parenthood is my ultimate favorite program. Every actor/actress on the show portrays such real emotion as they convey to us the issues that touch many families. Praise to the writers of this show as they incorporate family values and a closeness of siblings that I remember well growing up. I go through a range of nostalgic emotions while watching this show including how the issue of Autusim is addressed. I only wish it had a better time slot as I know they would have more viewers. I… Read more »

This show has changed lives I vote to keep it on. It brought family dinners back and the meaning of family. Love the show!!!!!
I so agree with the previous posters- I LOVE PARENTHOOD and look forwrd to it every Tuesday night- It is so realistic, and the actors are so talented- So down to earth and realistic situations. EVERY episode has me laughing AND crying! Thanks, and please continue bringing this quality show to us every week!!!
I LOVE Parenthood. Being a retired teacher, I have such empathy for the boy with Asbergers (sp.?) as well as his parents. With all the current talk about Autism, the story line is right on target. All of the characters appeal to the audience and seem so REAL. The show deals with divorce, inter-racial relations, teenage dating, alcoholism, problems within disfunctional families, and yet the message each week is so uplifting. Your actors are excellent and touch my heart. Parenthood has become my favorite show. PLEASE do not remove it. Your show is worthwhile, superior, and realistic. I cannot wait… Read more »
