The fight won’t continue. Showtime has cancelled its Penny Dreadful: City of Angels TV show so, there won’t be a second season.
A supernatural drama series that’s a “spiritual descendent” of the original Penny Dreadful series from 2014, Penny Dreadful: City of Angels stars Nathan Lane, Natalie Dormer, Daniel Zovatto, Kerry Bishé, Rory Kinnear, Adriana Barraza, Michael Gladis, Jessica Garza, and Johnathan Nieves. It’s set in 1938 Los Angeles, a time and place deeply infused with social and political tension. The series follows earnest Detective Tiago Vega (Zovatto), the LAPD’s first Latino detective, and his seasoned partner, Lewis Michener (Lane). When a grisly murder shocks the city, they become embroiled in an epic story that reflects the rich history of Los Angeles — from the building of the city’s first freeways and its deep traditions of Mexican-American folklore, to the dangerous espionage actions of the Third Reich and the rise of radio evangelism.
Airing on Sunday nights, the first season of Penny Dreadful: City of Angels averaged a 0.03 rating in the 18-49 demographic and 348,000 viewers. Despite the low ratings, compared to other Showtime scripted series, the show was a middle-of-the-road performer.
“Showtime has decided not to move forward with another season of Penny Dreadful: City of Angels. We would like to thank executive producers John Logan, Michael Aguilar, and the entire cast and crew for their outstanding work on this project,” the premium channel said in a statement.
The 10th and final episode aired on June 28th.
What do you think? Did you enjoy this TV series? Would you have watched season two of Penny Dreadful: City of Angels on Showtime?
Great show ! I loved it !
I would have love to watch Penny Dreadful City of Angels. But if they want more people to watch a show, put it on a regular channel. More and more people cannot afford to pay for extra channels on TV. There are way to many pay to watch channels , plus paying for your cable. and internet.
Such a compelling show that speaks up about issues that matter in today’s time. Nathan Lane is incredible and gave his best onscreen performance here. From what the crew members said, they got cancelled due to budgetary reasons, since they have started working on Season 2 set and scripts – it wasn’t til late July that Showtime pulled the plug, so it must have something to do with the pandemic. Hope another network can give it a home, and maybe the show can rebrand itself as “City of Angels” without the “Penny Dreadful” name. It’s doing great as a stand… Read more »
Showtime once again shows bad judgment and a lack of class in cutting a show that was just starting to find its way. After cutting Ray Donavon without a closing season and keeping trash like Shameless on the air, you have to wonder the low intelligence of the executives and how out of touch they are with their audience.
So disappointed! Loved this. Acting was incredible. Daniel Zovatto, Adriana Barazza, Natalie Dormer, Nathan Lane all excellent! Showtime made a HUGE mistake cancelling this one!
I am very saddened by the cancellation of City of Angels. I thought the series was well developed and produced. The acting was superb and the filming excellent. The depiction of L. A. in the thirties as well as the resentment of the Latino population then as it is now was eyeopening. The adding of the Nazi element combined with the supernatural affect only enhanced the series to a higher degree. I must agree with “Mlee’s ” comment that if it doesn’t contain nude bachelors or beach bunnies it just wont register —such a shame.
It used the name from the first series which caused a lot of confusion. People were expecting a lot more supernatural things other than two angels, and a freaky boy. The one angel looked freaky but she didn’t do anything. Ohh wow she blows out candles when she appears boring! It was a lot of political propaganda throughout this series, which was not prevalent in the original series, and turned off a lot of people. I stopped watching, but someone close to me finished it, and didn’t think it was that great. Natalie Dormer in four roles was probably fun… Read more »
We don’t care.
I liked the series and watched it each week.
I would watch season 2!!
I would definitely watched season2. Saondisappointed
Very disappointing. Natalie Dormer was magnificent in FOUR roles & I think nailed them all! Tiago’s Mom was amazing & I thought the whole history timeline was great! Seems like anytime a show starts to capture my attention and it’s canceled! I guess if it’s not got naked bachelors & bachelorettes it’s a no go huh?
It was an awesome show, and Showtime is a bunch of morons for cancelling it.
It was a terrible show. The writing/plotting was predictable. The original show with Eva Green was much better.
I thought this was an amazing show. A bit “Westside Storyish”. Fantastic actors . Intriguing story. Incredibly creative. must’ve been super bad marketing.
It was an idiotic boring show with a story line all over the place and Dormer looking ridiculous in multiple roles. Good riddance.
I wish they brought back the original Penny Dreadful
I really liked the show Penny Dreadful. It seems most of the shows I enjoy get cancelled. I’m very disappointed. Another good show goes down the drain. I might as well cancel my subscription. Not much entertainment for me on Showtime.
I agree to this. Every time I like a show it seems to get cancelled. If I don’t like a show it goes on for like 10 seasons.
