Executive Producer JJ Abrams expects the Person of Interest TV series to be cancelled by CBS, after its shortened fifth season. Abrams speculated about the show’s fate today, at the TCA winter press tour.
The cast of this crime drama includes Michael Emerson and Jim Caviezel. Cancellation rumors have been swirling around for a while, even though EP Greg Plageman, like Abrams, thinks there are more stories to tell.
Here is more from Abrams, via TVLine:
“My guess is [Season 5] is the final season,” executive producer J.J. Abrams shared on Saturday at the Television Critics Association winter press tour. “The only heartbreak there is how much good story there was to come if it were to have continued.”
Planning ahead of time for the Season 5 finale to also serve as a series finale, Abrams confirmed, was “the goal. But, obviously, things can be adjusted if [there’s] a miraculous [ratings] performance. But I think the idea is that this would be the finale.”
The discussion of shopping the series around to a new possible home, “in theory, will be had at the right time,” Abrams said. “But at the moment that’s not what we’re doing.”
“[Showrunners] Jonah Nolan and Greg Plageman have done such an amazing job on the show,” Abrams continued, “and I know what these episodes are that they’ve done, wrapping it up. We don’t yet have a schedule, but I know these episodes will see the light of day. People will get to see these episodes.”
For its fourth season, Person of Interest ratings averaged a 1.53 in the 18-49 demographic, and drew in an average audience size of 9.42 million viewers. Compare those to the third season ratings, when the show averaged a 2.0 rating in the 18-49 demographic and 11.83 million total viewers.
What do you think? Do you watch the Persons of Interest TV show? Should be cancelled after season five, or renewed for a sixth season?
Both my husband and I love Person of Interest. I just wish they had not strayed so far from the show’s original storyline. I know a show must grow, but I think it went to far. Just like the show Fringe. It too went to far from what made it such a terrific show.
I think if P O I geared back, they would have more viewers. Just sayin.
This is an excellent show that I always look forward to watching. I do not watch a lot of TV but this is high on my list. The characters, acting and plot are great.
Person of Interest should keep going, it is a shame that networks have to cancel shows because of low ratings. AS usual, networks don’t have brains.
That would be a crying shame. POI is one of the best and smartest shows on television today, and I just cannot understand why it isn’t doing better in the ratings Michael Emerson, Jim Caviezel, Amy Acker, Sarah Shahi and Kevin Chapman comprise one of the best ensemble casts on TV, and their characters complement each other so well. Every team member knows his/her role and they all fit together to make a helluva team. If the show does go away, I will miss it.
While I liked the show initially, I was getting a little tired of it. That said, I won’t be sorry to see it go.
I won’t miss it either…. It was great the first 2 seasons… then they got wildly off track to the point where you couldn’t even figure out the story! Plus I missed the woman who left to have her babies. She was an interesting character. They should have stayed with the helping people idea. All the new computer crap is just that.. crap.
I love this show because it is the bed kick ass show on network tv! CBS would be ******** to cancel the show! Root is my second favorite on the show because I want to see Shaw return somehow!!!! CBS gives the show a crappy timeslot and takes forever for the series to return! CBS has many poor shows in the lineup that should have been cancelled but not POI!!!!
Person of Interest is one of the smartest shows out there. I read yesterday that NYC is planning to do away with pay phones and put up hundreds of free WiFi stations with android phones or tablets for the public to use. I instantly thought of this show, wondering what Harold would think of this. It’s sounded like a Samaritan plot to learn even more about people. I hope it does not get cancelled.
This is my favorite show. I never miss an episode.
I love Person of Interest it is the best show on prime time- it combines drama, action and humor. The characters are great- they are all some of the best actors and actresses on prime time and cable. We have so few shows on television that have such a fine cast and characters you can really care about. Plus we have so few shows that address moral dilemmas that heroes face when preventing death and violence.
My hope is that WGN picks up Person of Interest!
I want to be renewed not only for season five and six too!!! I enjoyed the show very much. Leave it on the air it is a great show.
One of the best shows on TV. Needs to stay on the air.
YET ANOTHER BAD DECISION CBS
YET ANOTHER BAD DECISION COMING ALONG. VERY GOOD SHOW YOUR WANTING TO CANCEL. PERSON OF INTEREST IS WELL WRITTEN (WITH THE EXCEPTION OF CARTER) BEING TAKEN OUT. HOWEVER, THE WHOLE CAST IS JUST GREAT AND SHOW IS AWESOME. KEEP IT UP CBS AND I WILL NO LONGER WATCH CBS.
Even though the dip in ratings, person of interest still has better ratings than most shows on other channels. Let’s face it, it’s not going to get the ratings CBS want, that’s why they want them… Hopefully another channel or Netflix, as long as it stays on iTunes, will pick it up because it’s one of the most interesting shows around.. Take the new show, Limitless, where did that come from? A Movie.. I doubt it will last past a couple of seasons before the ratings drop to even worse than person of interest.
This was one of our favourite series until they killed off the female police detective and instead of just getting numbers and helping people lke it was ehn it started, it has turned into a computer war and a computer trying to find them we have lost interest. Also have been waiting to find out if Shaw is still alive and that has dragged out too long. It was a great series in the begining but perhaps it is time to end it and wrap all the story lines up.
Numbers continue to come up even through Season 4.
The rise of a competitive AI (Samaritan) was inevitable, and the conflict plays out in clear moral terms.
Shaw is still alive set to return in Season 5.
The relationship of technology and humanity is one of the great issues of our time. This prescient series will be studied for years to come (and here I’m speaking as an English professor).
