Ray Donovan has fixed his last mistake. Showtime canceled the series after the end of season seven recently, and the news was a shock to all those involved with the series, including the man running things behind the scenes. David Hollander revealed that he thought the series would end with season eight. The writers were working towards that conclusion, and Showtime was aware of that plan when Hollander began writing during season seven.
Hollander said the following about Showtime ending Ray Donovan, per Vulture:
“We’re still scratching our heads. We had no indicator that the show was ending. We were behaving creatively as though we were in mid-sentence. And so, there was no sense that this was going to be a completion. This was in no way a series finale.”
Hollander and his staff already had season eight in mind, and that season was going to end things on a note where the fans would have closure. Season seven did not do that. The fans are left with cliffhangers across the board. Season six’s finale would have closed the series out on a much better note.
Hollander revealed the following about the plot of season eight:
“The pivot we had been making narratively was to move the backstory into the present and run it concurrently. So there were actually two stories to be told: What happened then, really, and how will that impact what happens now? The next step was what happened with Ray and Mickey in the ‘90s, which would have been the creation of Ray Donovan as a character and as a fixer. That’s why we went into such detail to find the right cast.
That [flashback] story was a helpful pivot, at least for me creatively. I felt really good about it. And so, that story was going to run directly against the idea of Ray and Mickey now.”
Could the series return to close things out? Hollander did not count that out, but it would be easier to do sooner rather than later. The sets are still in place, and the cast could be called back in.
Hollander did have this message for the fans:
Thank you, first and foremost. A huge, huge thank you. All we can do is hope that we have an audience that cares. The gratitude is really meaningful to those of us who are feeling a little bit lost by what’s happened.
The other thing that I feel is a bit apologetic. I’m proud of the work that we all did. I’m proud of the way that this year ended. It was powerful and well-acted and they achieved what I hoped they would. However, this wasn’t meant to be [the ending]. You could spin it one way and say that it’s hard to satisfy an audience with a finale, not that I didn’t want to try. I always want the opportunity to try. I just wish I had.”
What do you think? Do you want to see Ray Donovan closed out in a way that ties up the loose ends left by season seven? Or, was it time to end the series?
After faithfully watching Ray Donovan for 7 seasons I am so sad and shocked to hear it was cancelled No closure left hanging it would have been more deserving to wrap up with a final season as most long running shows do. The faithful fans and wonderful actors /writers deserve at least that. I suppose now I will cancel my showtime subscription I have little faith in this network it appears showtime exec’s care so little for an original series created for them to leave us viewers hanging forever
The fans of Ray Donovan deserve a final season of closure, even if it is a shortened season. This is no way to end a long time running fan favorite drama, Showtime. Just cutting us off with all the different story lines hanging is a very crappy way to treat your fans and cast and all people involved with the Ray Donovan show. It’s obvious the storyline was running itself to an end; shows eventually end, we all understand that. But, you should do better and close this fine show out appropriately.
Please make season 8! We have been loyal fans for 7 seasons! This sucks! We ♥️ Ray
Ray Donovan deserves that 8th season for closure. The quality of excellence of the writing, acting and direction was unsurpassed. It has earned it.
Season 8 needs to happen
This SHOW and the FANS DESERVE a SEASON 8!!! Give us some closure instead of a mediocre ending like it was any other episode!! The FANS have been DEVOTED to this AMAZING SHOW!!! I subscribe to Showtime “just” for this show! PLEASE DO THE RIGHT THING!!! Bring it back for a SEASON 8 and More than 10 Episodes and let the show end with the DIGNITY it deserves especially for the AMAZING ACTORS AND DEVOTED FANS!!!
I was looking forward to Season 8 and to understanding how Ray became the man he was. I don;t understand why Showtime had to cancel the series. Is there anything devoted followers of Ray Donovan can do to convince Showtime to reconsider.
Why would Showtime cancel such a great show? Just a stupid move and very inconsiderate to all of the fans that have invested in these characters and the show. Why would you leave us hanging? I will never pay for showtime ever! I sure hope that netflix picks this wonderful show up.
You are so right! Don’t you feel disrespected? I do. Corporate idiots doing their stupid thing again. I’ve always wanted to know more about where the Donovan family came from and how they wound up in the business they’re in. Is Mickey’s father actually dead? Could he have faked his death and deserted? I’ve had this idea since season 6, since the liberty island ferry ride and Ray’s talk with the red haired Irish lady that there might have been more to that. I have so many questions. Now I’ll be left hanging forever because of some slimy corporate hacks.
Please let the writers go for season eight. I know the viewership was huge!
Typical big studio crap. I have enjoyed the series from the start, and was hoping to see a proper end to the series. This scenario reminds me so much of the garbage that CBS pulled off on the cast of Gunsmoke at the conclusion of the 1974-975 season. No ending to a 20 year run, no caste good-byes, nothing, just a cold boot, almost the same as what Ray Donovan is going through. Do the right thing, and allow the show to go out with a fitting ending. Time to look at ending my subscription to this subpar network.
OMG…SHOWTIME HOW DARE YOU!!??
Ray Donovan is one of the best shows on TV!!!!! I am sick over this!! Showtime you better get your act together!!!!!
PLEASE give us closure and have Season 8. Ray Donovan is the only reason I watch Showtime.
I was shocked when I saw the announcement! Why not let it FINISH it’s run? Too many loose ends!
I’m bitterly disappointed.the least that could have been is a wrap up movie ☹
Have a season 8 to give the shows fans some closure. No way to end a GREAT show!!!
Ray Donovan needs closure season eight would draw everything to it’s ultimate conclusion. It has come this far it needs a great final season
