Late in the 2013-14 season, NBC and ABC launched three new Sunday night dramas — all with single word titles. NBC cancelled Crisis and Believe while ABC renewed Resurrection for a second season. In retrospect, was that a good decision for the alphabet network? Should Resurrection have been cancelled as well?
On Resurrection, a small town in Missouri is turned upside down when long-dead loved ones return after 30 years. The cast includes Omar Epps, Frances Fisher, Matt Craven, Devin Kelley, Mark Hildreth, Samaire Armstrong, Sam Hazeldine, Landon Gimenez, and Kurtwood Smith.
Debuting on March 9th, Resurrection had a great launch with a 3.8 rating in the 18-49 demographic with 13.9 million total viewers. (Those numbers are about the same as this season’s How to Get Away with Murder’s debut.)
Unfortunately, Resurrection’s ratings dropped about 19% in week two and they kept falling nearly every week of the eight episode season. The seventh installment hit a low of a 1.9 rating with 7.85 million — half of the premiere’s demo rating.

Considering the poor luck that the alphabet network had last year launching new dramas, it wasn’t much of a surprise that ABC renewed Resurrection. They didn’t have much choice. However, the ratings slide was a terrible sign for the future.
Now, the show has been really struggling in season two. After a positive second season debut, the ratings quickly dropped, falling to new series lows week after week. The October 26th installment registered a mere 1.2 rating with 4.36 million.
ABC recently ordered full seasons and additional episodes of many of their new and older shows. It was a telling sign that the network is only producing 14 episodes of Resurrection this season.
Unless the ratings improve, it looks very likely that Resurrection will be cancelled by May. Hopefully, the writers will give viewers some degree of closure before the end.
What do you think? Did you stop watching Resurrection? Should it have been a mini-series? Is competition from The Walking Dead and football the cause of the low ratings? Do you think Resurrection should be cancelled or renewed for a third season?
I really like Resurrection. There are definitely questions that need to be worked out! Please…don’t cancel. There is just the right mixture of mystery, deceit and intrigue.
This series is awesome and the low ratings are because it’s on the same time as walking dead. This show is amazing and I really hope it isn’t canceled. I love it and it’s so refreshing watch a show that isn’t full of sex and also isn’t reality tv. Please keep the amazing episodes coming 🙂
I never get into episodes but, Resurrection was different. It made you think, what if!
I think the dead coming back should be different people from all over the world. Dead people that did wrong or who saw wrong, finally have a choice to make it wright. Keeping the viewer in suspense, thinking someones life is this way but, it really isn’t what it seems to be.
Pretty great series. I hope they don’t cancel. I could see it being a mini series though, because we’ll never get answers on the “returned” if it continues.
I hope this show does not get canceled. It’s one of the few shows on TV that is not riddled with sex, violence or the occult. I look forward to the mystery each episode brings.
Please don’t cancel! It’s the best show on network TV!!!!! I really missed it last night. Have to go another week without it, but I can’t wait for it to return. This show makes you think and I love that!!!! Please don’t cancel. Move it to a bette time and not going up against The Walking Dead.
I love resurrection and would love to see more seasons of it. Please continue with it.
I love watching Resurrection and was wondering why it didnt come on last night. Yes it is in competition with the Walking Dead but I DVR them both so I can watch so please DONT CANCEL!!!
Resurrection started out strong but in this second season it doesn’t appear the writers know where to take it. It’s repeating the same story line as the first season……..yawn. Going to stop watching if no improvement or take it off the air.
Please don’t cancel resurrection, ! I would be itvery disappointed !
Very disappointed tonight to not see Resurrection and see Revenge on line up….Very disheartening that a show that actually makes a person think probably lost out to a soap opera format. I understand the number game, but really, not even a final episode in the very height of the series? That’s not showing any concern for viewers, as far as I’m concerned. I understand that’s not a corporate problem, but maybe finalizing a series, even if it’s rolling one finale with 5 episodes worth of main points, might show some concern from the network, in not offending viewers that have… Read more »
Nancy I totally agree with you on this. Its very disappointing. You can never depend on a program on ABC because they will get you excited then cancel it.
Well, I think some “A H” at ABC decided it was a great idea to cancel a show that so many of us love to watch. SHAME on him. My 11 year old daughter and I watch this every Sunday. Her bed time is at 8:30 but I let her stay up late to watch this. I am not sure where they get there ratings, but they suck! Every time they put a program on it is only on for one or two season then gone. And as usual this one just started getting us all excited about it then… Read more »
I’m sure Sunday Night Football hurt the ratings, but with DVR i have no problem. I enjoy this show and hope it does not get canceled.
I look forward to seeing each new episode each week. I just saw that it won’t be on tonight & next week. I sincerely hope ABC doesn’t cancel Resurrection. If they do, I really need to stop watching any tv series & getting invested in them . This has happened too many times.
