Smash has been sent packing. The musical drama will finish its season on Saturday nights. While the peacock network hasn’t said that the show’s been cancelled, there’s no way they’re bringing it back for a third season.
Smash follows a cast and production team in New York as they try to mount a new Broadway musical. This season, the ensemble cast includes Debra Messing, Christian Borle, Katharine McPhee, Jack Davenport, Megan Hilty, Anjelica Huston, Leslie Odom Jr., Jeremy Jordan, Krysta Rodriguez, and Andy Mientus.
Last season, Smash was a moderate success for NBC, thanks in part to the strong lead-in support from The Voice. It averaged a 2.3 rating in the 18-49 demographic with 6.74 million total viewers.
This season, Smash has really suffered without the reality competition’s support. The six episodes that have aired thus far have averaged a mere 1.0 in the demo with 3.48 million.
Other than Fashion Star on Friday nights, Smash is currently NBC’s lowest-rated series.
While there’s no way NBC will be making a third season, there is positivenews. NBC appears to be commited to letting the remaining 11 episodes air. Smash will start running on Saturday nights on April 6th, at 9pm.
What do you think? Are you sad about Smash’s fate? Do you like the show this season?
I loved season one but this season two is awful. The music and numbers last year were great and I bought the new CD. But this season, there are hardly any numbers from Bombshell and the music is awful. It doesn’t compare to last year at all. I agree that I want Karen and Derrick together but I don’t know how that is likely because of all the new characters that I can’t stand. I thought they were going to improve this season and build on the great things from last year, but this season is incredibly awful. The best… Read more »
Loved SMASH during the first season. Not to happy with season two. Get rid of Jennifer Hudson. Her constant screeching ruins the show. The storyline/plot of season two is not as good as season one.
Don’t cancel- just get rid of the useless characters, ie Jennifer Hudson and Sean Hayes.
I agree.
Thought the show was great first season. Hate it this season. Don’t like the new characters and can’t stand Jennifer Hudson’s screaming. Too bad, I was looking forward to its return only to be sadly disappointed. The so called plots and subplots are a totally disjointed joke. What happened?
I fell in love with this show since day one. I cannot stand Glee and I have never watched the Voice. With the move to Saturday nights, it is inevitable it will be canceled. I am very disappointed in NBC. From the music to the storyline, this show has been amazing. There was no need for Jennifer Hudson and Sean Hayes to be on the show. I think it messed up a great story. The addition of Jeremy Jordan, though, was great. A true talent as an actor and singer. I will be so sad to see it go. It’s… Read more »
Smash is amazing and I am a baby of the 80’s. It is clear I still watch along with another 1.8 million others. It is true they was no reason to bring in Jennifer Hudson she has not part of the show period nor did she. Each of us new and were drawn in from season one, which does allow new actors like Katherines love interest and his partner. As well as the young lady Katherine moved in with. There is so much that can be done with this there is no way NBC should cancle or move the show.… Read more »
So sorry SMASH is being cancelled. All my friends watch it – and do not watch GLEE.
We agree with others wanting to see Karen & Darrick get together. Do not like side-show plots. First Season plot was much better. Also, too many other “stars”. It already had a great cast. Get rid of Shaun Hayes–total misfit for this show.
Also VOICE had nothing to do with our tuning in SMASH. We hate VOICE. Only 1 good Judge (both seasons)-Blake Shelton.
I am heartbroken about the demise of this show. The work and effort that goes into producing the original song and dance numbers on top of the narrative plot advancement are unmatched on anything else airing today. It is such a tragedy that NBC audiences are not sophisticated or appreciative enough to value the artistry that is Smash. Wasn’t the show originally supposed to have aired on Showtime? Perhaps a more discerning cable audience is what the show needs. I hope and pray that the show finds another place to land and given the chance to cultivate the audience it… Read more »
Keep the show – lose the big name guest stars. The beauty of Smash was that it was ‘our’ own little world of Broadway. Sure, we know that Megan Hilty and others are in this business – but unless one lives in NY, we are just getting acquainted and it’s like we’re peeking into a world that we only dream about. The ‘famous’ guest stars burst the bubble. Love Smash with the original cast.
I just can’t believe that there were so many changes made from season 1 with removing the interesting dialogue to trying to jump start other characters careers…. ie: Hudson. Get her back to Broadway and give us back the GREAT SMASH HIT!!!! THE VOICE IS COMING BACK ON… WHY NOT PUT IT BACK INTO IT’S SWEET SPOT? IT NEVER FAILS THAT WHEN YOU GET A GREAT SHOW AND THINGS WORK WELL YOU START TO TRY AND SHOVE THE THINGS THAT YOU THINK WERE WHAT MADE THE SHOW A SUCCESS INSTEAD OF GIVING THE SHOW THE PERFECT BLEND THAT MADE US… Read more »
I appreciate that NBC will let us finish the season. I think they should put shows that their planning on canceling on their slowest night or online. You asked us to watch and at least 3 million people are watching. It’s harder now to compete with cable I understand but if u want to keep loyal watchers don’t just end the show give it a finale well never forget.
I really love the show. The production and acting is first rate. Shame on the younger crowd for not seeing the show for what it is. Better than Glee and Dancing with the Stars in my opinion,
If they just find more of a focus point and not to just guest starts, the show will go back to being awesome!
I agree with you Danielle. Every time NBC gets a great show they don’t give it the time or nurturing that is needed to draw in more viewers. It seems to me that NBC exec’s let these stars that see a new venue for their self promotion and pressure the writers to write them in. The freshness of the first season was what worked and you need to get out the advertisement to the younger crowd like they did with GLEE. I am devoted to watching this show and if my DVR misses taping it then I will go online… Read more »
Don’t cancel Smash! They diversified the storyline, and made it more interesting.
Season 1 was great and fun to watch, but when NBC announced the addition of Miss Hudson for Smash Season 2, I watched two episodes, and was not impressed any longer. Smash season two lost its juice. Sat nights are the farewell spots for TV Shows. Here’s your sign NBC. (Bill Engvall-Comedian 1996-slogan)
Great new writers this show is great. Season one was amazing. These writers are hurting season two
You’re right season 1 was great and season 2 is even hard to watch. These new characters are just not working for me.
