Minnie Driver’s last comedy series, About A Boy, was beloved by many but had poor ratings so it was cancelled by NBC after two seasons. How will Speechless, her new sitcom for ABC, perform in the ratings? Will it be cancelled or renewed? Stay tuned.
On Speechless, Maya DiMeo (Minnie Driver) is a no-nonsense mom who will do anything for her loved ones and fights injustices — both real and imagined. The family includes husband Jimmy (John Ross Bowie), brainy Ray (Mason Cook), athletic Dylan (Kyla Kennedy), and teenager JJ (Micah Fowler), who has cerebral palsy. Moving to an upscale school district, Maya’s searching for just the right person to give JJ his “voice.” Could the school’s groundskeeper, Kenneth (Cedric Yarbrough), be the person to do that?
The ratings are typically the best indication of a show’s likelihood of staying on the air. The higher the ratings (particularly the 18-49 demo), the better the chances for survival. This chart will be updated as new ratings data becomes available — typically around 11:30am EST/8:30am PST. Refresh to see the latest.
5/18 update: You can see the rest of the latest night’s ratings.
Note: If you’re not seeing the updated chart, please try reloading the page or view it here.
Note: These are the Live + Same Day Ratings which include “live” viewing plus delayed DVR viewing, up until 3am local time that same night. Ratings marked with an “*” are the fast affiliate ratings and will be updated with the Live+SD numbers when they are made available. Typically, networks get paid for C+3 ratings which includes DVR viewing within three days of the original airing when commercials are watched. Those numbers are rarely released to the press.
What do you think? Do you like the Speechless TV series on ABC? Do you think it should be cancelled or renewed for a second season?
5/12 update: ABC has renewed Speechless for a second season. Details here.
I’ve liked Minnie Driver ever since Good Will Hunting. I also enjoy all the family dynamics. The children, husband, and care taker are all are great actors with unique personalities. Great writing. We need more witty shows that portray the gifts of our disabled. This boy IS a charmer!!
I understand the show and like parts of it. Cannot tolerate the mother.
I’m disabled and I can tell you the have the mother exactly right.
I will watch anything but this show, Minnie Driver is awful as she was on her last show.
@kevinkarns, i agree – i wish they would cancel this show. put something on that’s actually entertaining
Can’t tolerate the mom in this show. Her accent and acting is over done, as well as her over protective, helicopter parenting personality. I do agree with a comment here that Two broke girls is the worst!!
Speechless is one of the best sitcoms I’ve seen in a very long time! My whole family feels the same. Why are good shows always canceled and crappy stupid shows such as “2 Broke Girls” left on the air?
I think this program is well done and so much better than a lot of the trash that is on tv today. Give it a chance.
Love the show Speechless!! Funny, relevant and heartfelt.
Please give this show a chance. My son is 10 and disabled and he feels this is the only show where his voice is heard and looks forward to want his family come sit and watch it together. It does reflect a lot of every day situations that we as parents and his siblings feel too, and makes us feel its ok to be different. I often wonder if the person writing the show has someone with special needs, because it hits so many spots. Thank you for everyone who is making this happen
Absolutely love this series and look forward to many more. Minnie Driver’s strength shines through. Uplifting and inspiring. Thank you.
Please give it a chance. I am disabled & it really reflects some of the every day situations a wheelchair bound person encounters. And it’s funny!
This show is growing on me! The family , including the caregiver have great chemistry. I know some people have trouble with a disabled person so I hope the network gives it a chance!
The pilot was not so bad, but I was totally turned off watching the second episode. I do not like how the family is depicted as what the father said wanting to be treated as “idiots”. If this is truly based on the creator of the shows family, they do not set a good example for viewers. Not cleaning the yard and how they treat neighbors badly particularly how they explained how they are at the end of episode 2 is not good. If this family was truly like that I wouldn’t want them living near me. If it continues… Read more »
This show is not funny. Obnoxious people getting away with being rude due to the disability of their child is wrong. The sad part is it’s something that does exist.
@Patty – i agree. i really wish this show would just go away & get replaced with something more entertaining.
Great show for families. This show is funny and refreshing. This is the kind of show needed these days. It makes you laugh and feel good. I hope you all can watch it live.
Far and away, the worst program we have ever attempted to watch. Very degrading in that it purports to demonstrate how “normal” people actually view-slash-deal with those with “special needs.” NOT EVEN CLOSE.
Speaking as a mom of a disabled child, this show is spot on accurate how our life has been. It is nice to be able to make light of the difficulties and challenges we have faced. Thanks for bringing 30 minutes of laughter into our night.
My husband and I both have Cerebral Palsy from birth. Its nice to see an actor with Cerebral Palsy playing a character with Cerebral Palsy. I do wish JJ’s communication board was more realistic (words OR individual letters, not a combination of both). Speechless is a wonderful show. Please give it a chance.
