When Stargate SG-1 ended its run in March 2007, fans of the franchise could take solace that they’d still have weekly Stargate adventures courtesy of spin-off Stargate Atlantis. Now, Atlantis is being cancelled as well.
Stargate Atlantis debuted on July 16, 2004 on Sci Fi. The series follows the adventures of a human expedition to the lost city of Atlantis in the Pegasus Galaxy. While Atlantis generally hasn’t been as popular as the SG-1 series, it still has a lot of fans. After five seasons on the air, Sci Fi Channel has announced that the series is ending.
The cancellation didn’t come as a complete surprise to the producers. On his blog, showrunner Joseph Mallozzi cites rising production costs and the decline of the US dollar as contributors. He and showrunner Paul Mullie broke the news to the cast and crew themselves. Thankfully it seems like the adventure isn’t over quite yet.
The second half of season five will air as expected on Sci Fi beginning in January. The 100th episode, titled “Enemy At the Gate,” will be the show’s last. The Atlantis story will then continue in a two-hour movie. The as-yet-untitled movie will run on Sci Fi and soonafter be released on DVD.
Mallozzi and Mullie will write the movie script. It’s not yet known who will direct the project. Mallozzi writes, “Obviously, I can’t say much about it at this point but suffice it to say that it should include the entire cast in addition to a certain gaunt and pallid flowing-locked guest star.” A release date should be forthcoming soon.
Brad Wright and Robert C. Cooper, the SG-1 and Atlantis co-creators, are upbeat about the news. In a statement, they said, “We’re excited to tell Atlantis stories on a bigger canvas. The successes of the two original Stargate DTV movies The Ark of Truth and Continuum have shown us the opportunities that the movie format offers. We have plans for both SG-1 and Atlantis to remain vital as we expand the franchise.”

“We share in the producers’ enthusiasm to move forward in this direction and we look forward to a strong and continued relationship on Stargate Atlantis in this new format,” said Thomas Vitale, Sci Fi’s Senior Vice President of Programming & Original Movies.
The network has indicated that “the show will live on as a network franchise.” What the statement actually means is unclear. Sci Fi may be planning additional Atlantis movies, or it could be a general indication that the Stargate franchise will continue, likely as a third series.
In late 2007, Cooper and Wright pitched Stargate Universe to the channel. Earlier this year, Wright told Gateworld, “The idea of Stargate Universe is that it is set on a ship that was part of an Ancient experiment that was set in motion probably millions of years ago — one that they never saw to fruition, but that we can.” He went on to say that the ship’s mission would be to help seed the galaxies with Stargates. Universe hasn’t been given a greenlight yet but, now that Atlantis has been cancelled, Sci Fi may have the funds to do it.
Though the Atlantis cancellation is surely a disappointment to fans, Mallozzi is confident the story isn’t over. He writes, “And, if [the Atlantis movie] proves anywhere as successful as the first two SG-1 direct-to-video features, you can be assured that this will be the first in a long, long line of Stargate Atlantis movies.” Stay tuned!

Wasn’t the original star trek put back on the air after the fans did a petition or something. They definitely left a lot of strings that need to be tied up. Like the azguard race in pegasus, Another one when they went to the alternate reality and fought the new race of the machine people (they kind of look like borg). I think this series has a lot of potential, though I think they shouldn’t keep changing the leader, I like elizabeth weir.
Oh i must say i love this show, and it would be my dreams come true if someday i’d be working on shows like this, im a 27 year old 3d artist 🙂
there is a campaign in saving the show
i create a yahoo group for fans to chat about ideas.
here is the link

truly i don’t understand
well there ever be anything else from this amazing show
no lie i wanna cry its not fare!
I can’t even begin to explain the pain that erks me to possible think of this show not extending out to expand for episodes after this last season. I’ve always been afraid that this would happen esspecially since I’m one of those who like to find shows and music and other things that no one is extremely into it makes me feel more unique, plenty of people live this show and even if the whole world did or did i could never get enough of it. I’ve dreamed of acting on this show, i wouldn’t ever care for fame or… Read more »
Atlantis should carry on in film form if nothing else. I do not however fully believe it will be made as i have no faith in BW or RCC. I ceratinly will not be wasting my time on Universe.
As on comment 140, the producers definatly has one SGA film in the pipelines, but they have also stated that as long as the first SGA film does any good then there will definatly be more SGA films to come after, lets hope so. This is no bull either, it is stated on the official stargate website. Also, your idea for SG Academy series is awesome dean, they should REALLY produce this as a series, I was a fan of the first starship troopers the other 2 were, well, ummm? RUBBISH! to put it lightly, but the whole academy thing… Read more »
I really have to agree wtih everyone, especially comment 128, WAY to many things were left unanswered, maybe the string of SGA films will finish all these off, but my INTERESTING idea, especially if I knew how to write scripts, would be to make a new tv series called “Stargate Academy”, following on from atlantis coming to earth, the President and the IOA decide to tell earth of the stargate and atlantis programme, this results in an academy for people to go and become SG members in a specially designed training academy located above earth’s atmosphere. There whilst training for… Read more »
I am disapointed abot this thing…. sg-1 has great actors, the greates from the SG series, than on second place are the actors from Atlantis(i am not saying they are bad just don’t fet on that story) and… the last place are the actors from universe, a bunch of morans…. …. so i will give a nothe…. sg-1 : 10…. sga…. for been canceled 0 (zero) and i am waiting with not so much interest sgu…… but in the first thing, i don’t like the actors…..
momentarly i watch farscape…. it is not so great 🙂
when you have hundreds of thousands of fans hanging off the edge of there seat for the next episode it defies logic why the best sci-fi show on television would be cancelled………………….very weak and shortcited decision to cancel season 6.Maybe if every fan pitched in some cash the poor company that produce the show might be able to continue it .
I Love stargate SG1 and Atlantis. I live in Australia and dont have the Sci Fi channel. I had to download all the episodes form season 5 and in the process got like 100 virus. Im gonna haf to watch Battlestar glactiar or star trek or something no where near how good stargate was. Im Pissed=-(
dude in a filled with limitations and hopelessness all over in rich and poor it really sucks that such a ehtical yet real group such as sg1 or atlantis can’t give the public what they really need and desire. A group that has guts and really risks their life for more thatn the earth but everywhere: allowing for placement of stargates. And the knox from sg1 who go beyond the ancients and greater technology which go beyond everyone.
Thanks sg1 and Atlantis for the good things you did give us
