When Stargate SG-1 ended its run in March 2007, fans of the franchise could take solace that they’d still have weekly Stargate adventures courtesy of spin-off Stargate Atlantis. Now, Atlantis is being cancelled as well.
Stargate Atlantis debuted on July 16, 2004 on Sci Fi. The series follows the adventures of a human expedition to the lost city of Atlantis in the Pegasus Galaxy. While Atlantis generally hasn’t been as popular as the SG-1 series, it still has a lot of fans. After five seasons on the air, Sci Fi Channel has announced that the series is ending.
The cancellation didn’t come as a complete surprise to the producers. On his blog, showrunner Joseph Mallozzi cites rising production costs and the decline of the US dollar as contributors. He and showrunner Paul Mullie broke the news to the cast and crew themselves. Thankfully it seems like the adventure isn’t over quite yet.
The second half of season five will air as expected on Sci Fi beginning in January. The 100th episode, titled “Enemy At the Gate,” will be the show’s last. The Atlantis story will then continue in a two-hour movie. The as-yet-untitled movie will run on Sci Fi and soonafter be released on DVD.
Mallozzi and Mullie will write the movie script. It’s not yet known who will direct the project. Mallozzi writes, “Obviously, I can’t say much about it at this point but suffice it to say that it should include the entire cast in addition to a certain gaunt and pallid flowing-locked guest star.” A release date should be forthcoming soon.
Brad Wright and Robert C. Cooper, the SG-1 and Atlantis co-creators, are upbeat about the news. In a statement, they said, “We’re excited to tell Atlantis stories on a bigger canvas. The successes of the two original Stargate DTV movies The Ark of Truth and Continuum have shown us the opportunities that the movie format offers. We have plans for both SG-1 and Atlantis to remain vital as we expand the franchise.”

“We share in the producers’ enthusiasm to move forward in this direction and we look forward to a strong and continued relationship on Stargate Atlantis in this new format,” said Thomas Vitale, Sci Fi’s Senior Vice President of Programming & Original Movies.
The network has indicated that “the show will live on as a network franchise.” What the statement actually means is unclear. Sci Fi may be planning additional Atlantis movies, or it could be a general indication that the Stargate franchise will continue, likely as a third series.
In late 2007, Cooper and Wright pitched Stargate Universe to the channel. Earlier this year, Wright told Gateworld, “The idea of Stargate Universe is that it is set on a ship that was part of an Ancient experiment that was set in motion probably millions of years ago — one that they never saw to fruition, but that we can.” He went on to say that the ship’s mission would be to help seed the galaxies with Stargates. Universe hasn’t been given a greenlight yet but, now that Atlantis has been cancelled, Sci Fi may have the funds to do it.
Though the Atlantis cancellation is surely a disappointment to fans, Mallozzi is confident the story isn’t over. He writes, “And, if [the Atlantis movie] proves anywhere as successful as the first two SG-1 direct-to-video features, you can be assured that this will be the first in a long, long line of Stargate Atlantis movies.” Stay tuned!

i am extreamly disappointed that sga has been cancelled. My work collegues and i enjoy talking about past episodes and current stories. and while i admit not everyone is as big a fan as i, i know of no-one who doesn’t like it.
I think Sci-fi should reconsider their decision. while a movie would be good it won’t make up for the loss of a series. francises make money and i believe by ending sga they risk ending their franchise as well.
Right now this very moment this is finale KILLING me!!!!!!! ::TEARS::: I love stargate!!
noooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo it cant stoooop!!!! im gonna diiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiieeeeeee!! :(:(:(:(:(:(:(:(:(:(:(:(:(:(:(:(
i want atlantis to keep showing ……i am disabled and stargate atlantis is what i make my schedule around .now what do i do ?????i i hate all others on sci fi channel ….please reconsider .we all like the show and have become like brothers and sisters to the cast…think about it
It’s sad that money was the only consideration when they cancelled the show. It’s a really great TV series and MGM is being increasingly unfair to it’s OBSESSIVELY loyal fanbase with the cancellation of SG-1 and Atlantis. In fact, besides these two, Sci-Fi Channel really can’t sport any other quality material that it shows. It’s literally all they have that’s good. Rehashes of Star Trek and Battlestar Galactica is what they’ve reduced themselves to now. A pity that Atlantis has been reduced to 1 two hour movie every two years now. Most people don’t have an attention span that long… Read more »
Producers and networks don’t seem to care what fans really want. SGA is the best thing the sci-fi channel has going. It won’t be worth watching now.
BRING BACK STARGATE ATLANTIS
BRING BACK STARGATE ATLANTIS
BRING BACK STARGATE ATLANTIS
BRING BACK STARGATE ATLANTIS
Absolutely gutted – by far best sci fi series around and now its no more????? Where’s the justice in that??
BRING BACK STARGATE ATLANTIS
Shame, yet another great show being cancelled. This is the best Scifi series about – will be sorely missed – waiting for the film already!!
Seems silly to cancel the most popular scifi show, what else have they got going on ? cause it seems like nothing, no star trek no stargate no farscape. if you cancel all your shoes yuor no longet in showbuisness 😛
seems stoopid but yea whatever face bothered ? :'(
…Why haven’t they said anything about this on tv? I just checked online to see if the new episode is out, saw the next one is titled the final episode… this is stupid!!!
i hope all who werck at Scifi bern in “hell” because they cansoled sg 1 and now this. you guys can eat **** and dai did you hear me eat **** and dai. To the cast of the Stargate SG1 and Atlantis, thanks for the best entertaining shows on Scifi.
Cutting costs certainly must override capturing viewers. I can’t see commercial time on Sci-Fi being worth a toss after this news and so too will their current advertisers I think. I too tried watching Sanctuary (shades of DresdenX-Files with Harry Mulder and Dr Dana Who), snickered then flipped it to NatGeo. The geeks are the only ones with money these days and Sci-Fi is in a mad rush to chase them off for what… unemployed teens? So be it.
Now you’ll have to excuse me as I have to mess with the schedule on my PVR.
when i logged on the stargate website dismorning i found out that they are canceling the atlantis series. i loved stargate from the 1st movie and watched it up to the last episode and the movies. when i got into the atlantis series it was the best it showed me what i like in SCIFI. im here in australia and we are a season behind then the other countries but the fact is i wont have nuffin to look forward to after season 5. i have every seasons of stargate SG-1 and the movies and the 1st 4 season of… Read more »
If they cancel it now it will be a bad sloppy ending. I really like the stargate universe but if the stop now they’ll RUIN the whole thing like they did with the ark of truth (everyone knows it was an exeptible ending, but COME ON we all must have thought afther 10 seasons thats all??) .Having created such a great story of the higher powers and the war behind it and then have it end like that, I was a little dissapointed when I saw it, it could have been BETTER. The should do the same with Atlantis. The… Read more »
