Cancel your season two plans, fans. There will be no second season of the Sun Records TV show on CMT. The story is ending with one season and has already been removed from the press site. The series is set in Memphis, Tennessee, during the early days of the Civil Rights movement and the birth of rock ‘n’ roll.
A music business drama, Sun Records stars Chad Michael Murray, Billy Gardell, Drake Milligan, Kevin Fonteyne, Christian Lees, and Jonah Lees. The CMT cast also includes: Trevor Donovan, Keir O’Donnell, Jennifer Holland, Margaret Anne Florence, and Kerry D. Holliday.
Deadline reports:
While Nashville — which is half-way though its first season on CMT and fifth overall — has been renewed for a 16-episode sixth season, there are no plans to extend its companion, 8-episode period drama Sun Records, which chronicles the birth of rock ‘n’ roll, CMT’s head of development Jayson Dinsmore told Deadline.
“Originally we had planned for it to be a three-night events, and we morphed the development into a limited-run series,” Dinsmore said of Sun Records, which got a boost by airing behind Nashville. “It always was to be a limited-run series. It did extremely well but there are no current plans for additional episodes. We may revisit. You never know, because it did quite well.”
Sun Records: A Look at the Ratings
The first season of Sun Records averaged a 0.13 rating in the 18-49 demographic and 585,000 viewers. While those ratings seem low in comparison to broadcast network TV series, they fall between the other CMT TV shows we are tracking (i.e. Nashville and Still the King).
What do you think? Did you watch the first season of the Sun Records TV series? Do you think CMT should have cancelled or renewed it for season two?
Well, since this show was the only reason I even knew what channel CMT was on my TV I guess I can go back to forgetting about this channel entirely.
I loved it and I am very sad that another show I liked has been canceled. They keep some really bad ones that I never watched. A disappointment
My husband and I very much enjoyed it. I thought there was much story left there to tell.
Oh, no! Cannot believe this! As so many others have said, I recorded every episode & watched each several times…It was just that good! Loved all the different singers depicted, casting, and the nostalgic return to simpler days. Please, please reconsider!
Too many people watching reality tv. This was a wonderful show. Please bring it back! Good actors, great music, my roots.
This is so stupid. Of course, the 18-49 group is not watching it, but the older people are. There are a lot of Baby Boomers and older people with money to spend on the products they advertise. I wish these people would wise up to that. Everything is not about the younger demographic. I hope another station picks the show up, but that probably won’t happen.
Sun Records was solid all eight episodes but really took off in the last four episodes, I was really, really looking forward to at least two more seasons. There is TONS more that could be done. They can check back in on Elvis due to the previous connection. Show the rise of Johnny, Carl and Jerry Lee. How about flashbacks to more of the Blues and R&B artists? Or the new wave of talent like Roy Orbison and then they could go behind closed doors with Charlie Rich. So much more to the story. How about an epilogue after Elvis died… Read more »
Every decent shows being cancelled this is getting pathetic too bad I really enjoyed watching your Channel
I think this stink I really like sun records and so didn’t a lot of my customers I would really like to see it back
Very disappointed! Seriously CMT??? You think Still the King is worth season 2 but not Sun Records? Who is making these decisions?? I so won’t be watching CMT any more! Bad, bad decision!!
It’s a real same that the show is not having a 2nd season. CMT is really starting to lose ratings and now they cancel sun records. Speaking for me and my family and friends CMT please reconsider.
As president of the Connecticut Record Club we were all quite impressed with the Show Sun Records. It is a shame to leave it basically hanging before Jerry Lee, Johnny Cash, Carl Perkins are brought to stardom..where is Roy Orbison ???? No mention of the Philips Label or it’s artists……… A shame to get a taste and not see it to the end…. Comcast will not be happy when I remove the station from my channel listings……….. Ronn Nagel. CRC
They need to bring back the series for season 2
I am VERY Disappointed that Sun Records was not renewed for a second season!
BIG MISTAKE!
I loved this show so much!! Please please do another season. It’s like watching history unfold. Loved it so much ❤️
