Cancel your season two plans, fans. There will be no second season of the Sun Records TV show on CMT. The story is ending with one season and has already been removed from the press site. The series is set in Memphis, Tennessee, during the early days of the Civil Rights movement and the birth of rock ‘n’ roll.
A music business drama, Sun Records stars Chad Michael Murray, Billy Gardell, Drake Milligan, Kevin Fonteyne, Christian Lees, and Jonah Lees. The CMT cast also includes: Trevor Donovan, Keir O’Donnell, Jennifer Holland, Margaret Anne Florence, and Kerry D. Holliday.
Deadline reports:
While Nashville — which is half-way though its first season on CMT and fifth overall — has been renewed for a 16-episode sixth season, there are no plans to extend its companion, 8-episode period drama Sun Records, which chronicles the birth of rock ‘n’ roll, CMT’s head of development Jayson Dinsmore told Deadline.
“Originally we had planned for it to be a three-night events, and we morphed the development into a limited-run series,” Dinsmore said of Sun Records, which got a boost by airing behind Nashville. “It always was to be a limited-run series. It did extremely well but there are no current plans for additional episodes. We may revisit. You never know, because it did quite well.”
Sun Records: A Look at the Ratings
The first season of Sun Records averaged a 0.13 rating in the 18-49 demographic and 585,000 viewers. While those ratings seem low in comparison to broadcast network TV series, they fall between the other CMT TV shows we are tracking (i.e. Nashville and Still the King).
What do you think? Did you watch the first season of the Sun Records TV series? Do you think CMT should have cancelled or renewed it for season two?
I loved this show, took you back in time and made you think of them as real people with real lives. Please reconsider bringing back this show
Best new show!I wish you would reconsider and bring the show back.
Bring it back!! It was a very well made show and very interesting. I love shows that bring history back to life in a majestic way, true to the period in both an entertaining and educational way. Please bring it back! This is a great show!
PLEASE bring it back! I’ve waited for its return all season. The actors are wonderful, and the show is realistic. A great history of the country and rock-and-roll music industry, and the impact the “beginners” made on so many of the now greats. So enjoy learning just how the legends were discovered and began to grow. Too much junk on tv as it is, and this show is entertaining and educational. Like that it’s actually filmed in Memphis, too.
BRING IT BACK!!!!! Best show on T.V, period!!!!
Bring it back. Excellent show.
do not cancel sun records, please! best program on all TV stations.
Bring it back!!! Been waiting for second season. Super sad
LOVE LOVE LOVE this show!! Come back!!!
I cannot believe this show is not returning. I have been waiting for season 2. Very disappointing. It was awesome!
Bring it back!!!!!!
Sorry to hear this, as I really enjoyed Sun Records. I never watched the show Nashville since that music never has been my choice. I am glad I saved the episodes on my DVR.
Original! Give this series a chance. One season and gone but you keep other stuff that should get the ax. Not everything needs to be geared towards the 25 and under!
We could not wait for season two. What a let down to know it won’t be back! It was missing nothing, and was very interesting to see how these leagens started Bad move
finally a show that was original, something new….so much potential……and CMT cancels…..please, if you will tell me 1 show on CMT that is better…how do you not give a story about Elvis, Cash and JL Lewis more than 1 season…..?
I’m so sad to know that “Sun Records” won’t be returning. I really enjoyed the first season, the actors were quite talented. I hope you will reconsider and bring It back.
