Cancel your season two plans, fans. There will be no second season of the Sun Records TV show on CMT. The story is ending with one season and has already been removed from the press site. The series is set in Memphis, Tennessee, during the early days of the Civil Rights movement and the birth of rock ‘n’ roll.
A music business drama, Sun Records stars Chad Michael Murray, Billy Gardell, Drake Milligan, Kevin Fonteyne, Christian Lees, and Jonah Lees. The CMT cast also includes: Trevor Donovan, Keir O’Donnell, Jennifer Holland, Margaret Anne Florence, and Kerry D. Holliday.
Deadline reports:
While Nashville — which is half-way though its first season on CMT and fifth overall — has been renewed for a 16-episode sixth season, there are no plans to extend its companion, 8-episode period drama Sun Records, which chronicles the birth of rock ‘n’ roll, CMT’s head of development Jayson Dinsmore told Deadline.
“Originally we had planned for it to be a three-night events, and we morphed the development into a limited-run series,” Dinsmore said of Sun Records, which got a boost by airing behind Nashville. “It always was to be a limited-run series. It did extremely well but there are no current plans for additional episodes. We may revisit. You never know, because it did quite well.”
Sun Records: A Look at the Ratings
The first season of Sun Records averaged a 0.13 rating in the 18-49 demographic and 585,000 viewers. While those ratings seem low in comparison to broadcast network TV series, they fall between the other CMT TV shows we are tracking (i.e. Nashville and Still the King).
What do you think? Did you watch the first season of the Sun Records TV series? Do you think CMT should have cancelled or renewed it for season two?
It should have been renewed. A great music history experience. We watched the complete first season and it was fabulous.
This sucks! I liked that show. Couldn’t wait for the show to come back on.
Still waiting for season 2. One of my favorite shows all time. Please do an episode 2.
I’ve never watched even a second of the soap opera trash Nashville but I was ready for many seasons of Sun Records.
We enjoyed watching this show together as a family . Was waiting for season 2 . So disappointed
So disappointed that Sun Records will not be back. We were waiting eagerly for the next season. Cannot believe this isn’t a hit show. We loved it.
I’m so disappointed that Sun Records has been cancelled! Because of this, I’m no longer a CMT fan. In the future I hope they start paying attention to what their audience really likes. #badcallCMT
My daughter.and I loved this show. How stupid to cancel it didn’t even get into Elvis being signed or Johnny Cash story line. Totally disappointed with this news.
I really loved the show, what the hell? Bring it Back!!!!
Wow they made a big mistake canceling this show. It was so good and the actors were amazing.
Despite the artistic licence by the producers, it was quite enjoyable – I hope Season Two is produced – just to rap up the careers (whether they’re now all walking into fame, etc.) – great show….
My husband and I loved Sun Records. It was a TV show we actually agreed on & watched together. So sad to see it’s not returning We are so tired of the crappy tv shows that go on & on and seem to never end. Then great shows like this one are on for ONE Season & poof it’s gone, not return. Please reconsider bringing Sun Records back for Season 2 and hopefully more.
Awesome show!!! Come on bring it back!!!
Bring it back! The acting and singing were phenomenal and it’s so entertaining and educational to learn about our history.
