Cancel your season two plans, fans. There will be no second season of the Sun Records TV show on CMT. The story is ending with one season and has already been removed from the press site. The series is set in Memphis, Tennessee, during the early days of the Civil Rights movement and the birth of rock ‘n’ roll.
A music business drama, Sun Records stars Chad Michael Murray, Billy Gardell, Drake Milligan, Kevin Fonteyne, Christian Lees, and Jonah Lees. The CMT cast also includes: Trevor Donovan, Keir O’Donnell, Jennifer Holland, Margaret Anne Florence, and Kerry D. Holliday.
Deadline reports:
While Nashville — which is half-way though its first season on CMT and fifth overall — has been renewed for a 16-episode sixth season, there are no plans to extend its companion, 8-episode period drama Sun Records, which chronicles the birth of rock ‘n’ roll, CMT’s head of development Jayson Dinsmore told Deadline.
“Originally we had planned for it to be a three-night events, and we morphed the development into a limited-run series,” Dinsmore said of Sun Records, which got a boost by airing behind Nashville. “It always was to be a limited-run series. It did extremely well but there are no current plans for additional episodes. We may revisit. You never know, because it did quite well.”
Sun Records: A Look at the Ratings
The first season of Sun Records averaged a 0.13 rating in the 18-49 demographic and 585,000 viewers. While those ratings seem low in comparison to broadcast network TV series, they fall between the other CMT TV shows we are tracking (i.e. Nashville and Still the King).
What do you think? Did you watch the first season of the Sun Records TV series? Do you think CMT should have cancelled or renewed it for season two?
Very disappointed as it’s stops short on Elvis and shows little of Johnny Cash and Jerry Lee musically. Definitely needs another season or at least a few more episodes to wrap it up. Loved ever show and all actors were great especially the Aussie who plays Dewey. Anyhow, it was great to recapture the Memphis music scene.
wasn’t sure but saw first two episodes due to another fan posting on a Elvis site but couldn’t get to see last 4 from that series…Sure hope be available on netfix or on computer up here in Canada soon as I could not get it in on channels I have either ..ty
Enjoyed the first couple of episodes, but lost interest after that. Guess that means i would not have watched a second season, anyway.
So disappointed that the series is over so abruptly. The final episode was not designated as a finale … So I thought more was coming. The show never got into Johnny Cash’s beginnings at Sun, just to used on Elvis’s beginning there. I feel like there could have been so much more. Would definitely like to see this one make a comeback.
I have really enjoyed the show. I believe there is a lot more to tell. I enjoy the music to drama balance , you don’t see a lot of that. There is room for more than one of those shows….keep at it.
My husband & I are extremely disappointed that Sun Records has been cancelled! It was a good series with history to it! Something that is lacking in today’s TV shows. Such a shame & am mad at CMT for cancelling it!
This was a great show that provided a really good insight into the details of the music industry at the time! Guess I’ll have to find some books about Sun Records instead of watching CMT.
I loved this show. I hope they reconsider.
Really enjoyed watching
. Wish they would not cancel .
I enjoyed this series and I’m so disappointed it won’t be renewed. I looked forward each week to watching it. No more CMT for me!
really enjoyed the show, sure wish it was going to continue
Sad to find out there will not be a second season. My sister and I loved this show. Great music, great acting, what more could you ask for from a show. I think CMT has made a BIG mistake!
I think that Sun Records should be promoted properly and given another chance. It is a well produced show and very interesting. At times it seems like a movie. It is very well cast as well. I just happened on to it via a Comcast on demand search. I hadn’t heard of it previously. Come on CMT take a chance, promote it well! I think you may have a hit on your hands if you do so!
I think it would have been a great show but the actors were terrible , the secretary of Sam was probally the best actress,,all of them Jerry lee and Swaggert were the worst also Johnny Cash . Anyways get better actors and come back would have been great , It had a lot of falsehoods also in it.
I think Drake Milligan is as close to another Elvis in every way. I think he was perfectly cast.
They need to make a season 2 it was a great show they always take the good stuff down to put stupid stuff on there like party down south or something dumb there’s still people out there that have sense rather then watch a bunch of dumb adults getting drunk an being stupid but history on music an shows about the past are better because you can learn more on what the world was like an watching people succeed in life rather than being drunks we need a season 2 how can you cancel the show like that i know… Read more »
