Cancel your season two plans, fans. There will be no second season of the Sun Records TV show on CMT. The story is ending with one season and has already been removed from the press site. The series is set in Memphis, Tennessee, during the early days of the Civil Rights movement and the birth of rock ‘n’ roll.
A music business drama, Sun Records stars Chad Michael Murray, Billy Gardell, Drake Milligan, Kevin Fonteyne, Christian Lees, and Jonah Lees. The CMT cast also includes: Trevor Donovan, Keir O’Donnell, Jennifer Holland, Margaret Anne Florence, and Kerry D. Holliday.
Deadline reports:
While Nashville — which is half-way though its first season on CMT and fifth overall — has been renewed for a 16-episode sixth season, there are no plans to extend its companion, 8-episode period drama Sun Records, which chronicles the birth of rock ‘n’ roll, CMT’s head of development Jayson Dinsmore told Deadline.
“Originally we had planned for it to be a three-night events, and we morphed the development into a limited-run series,” Dinsmore said of Sun Records, which got a boost by airing behind Nashville. “It always was to be a limited-run series. It did extremely well but there are no current plans for additional episodes. We may revisit. You never know, because it did quite well.”
Sun Records: A Look at the Ratings
The first season of Sun Records averaged a 0.13 rating in the 18-49 demographic and 585,000 viewers. While those ratings seem low in comparison to broadcast network TV series, they fall between the other CMT TV shows we are tracking (i.e. Nashville and Still the King).
What do you think? Did you watch the first season of the Sun Records TV series? Do you think CMT should have cancelled or renewed it for season two?
I watched this show and was loving it more and more. I love Elvis, Johnny Cash. All amazing music of that era. You should bring it back. Like it better than that show Memphis. This show gave more of a history from the artists and little more of a possibility of their lifestyles
Great first season. After a trip to Nashville, I became. Country music junkie. So disappointed it is not coming back. Please reconsider.
We watched Sun Records and never missed an episode. The only way we found about the show was from word of mouth. To bad a major network doesn’t pick up sun Records and advertise it properly. Would be a huge hit………….
Excellent show! Please bring it back! My husband even loves it!
Please do a second and even third season this was one of the best shows I’ve seen in a lot of years
I liked this show. Please bring it back for season 2
I so agree with Patricia here….”Sun Records” is an excellent show and CMT really needs to step up to the plate and put this TV series back on the air!!!! My husband doesn’t hardly watch TV shows, but once he started watching “Sun Records”, well he got really involved with this show and would also love to see it come back on TV….and SOON!!!!
BRING IT BACK!!!
why are all the good shows canceled? I loved this show…
I think I don’t want to watch anything on your network. You cancelled Sun Records and Nashville! Those were my favorite shows. Sorry but you have nothing else I want to watch.
It should be renewed, they can’t just end the 1st season like they did and expect that to be all, and for the audience to be perfectly fine with it. I personally loved the show, and know many others who watched the 1st season like it was a religion. Please bring it back!!
Not Happy, very disappointed wow bad timing had to be the problem, this was a wonderful show what a let down. But I believe or maybe just hopeful that it will return after all I’m just a number.
loved the show…good stuff
I was looking forward to watching season 2. I found the show entertaining and educational. Watching some of this country’s biggest country stars in there youth had me waiting for the start of season 2 but it never came. I don’t understand the business side of television very much. But this series had so much to write about. There are so many similar television shows if one network has it then the other comes out with one similar. But Sun Records could of been on the air for many years, because everyone wants to know how famous singers became famous,… Read more »
LOVED SUN RECORDS!!! Please bring back for Season 2!!
