Cancel your season two plans, fans. There will be no second season of the Sun Records TV show on CMT. The story is ending with one season and has already been removed from the press site. The series is set in Memphis, Tennessee, during the early days of the Civil Rights movement and the birth of rock ‘n’ roll.
A music business drama, Sun Records stars Chad Michael Murray, Billy Gardell, Drake Milligan, Kevin Fonteyne, Christian Lees, and Jonah Lees. The CMT cast also includes: Trevor Donovan, Keir O’Donnell, Jennifer Holland, Margaret Anne Florence, and Kerry D. Holliday.
Deadline reports:
While Nashville — which is half-way though its first season on CMT and fifth overall — has been renewed for a 16-episode sixth season, there are no plans to extend its companion, 8-episode period drama Sun Records, which chronicles the birth of rock ‘n’ roll, CMT’s head of development Jayson Dinsmore told Deadline.
“Originally we had planned for it to be a three-night events, and we morphed the development into a limited-run series,” Dinsmore said of Sun Records, which got a boost by airing behind Nashville. “It always was to be a limited-run series. It did extremely well but there are no current plans for additional episodes. We may revisit. You never know, because it did quite well.”
Sun Records: A Look at the Ratings
The first season of Sun Records averaged a 0.13 rating in the 18-49 demographic and 585,000 viewers. While those ratings seem low in comparison to broadcast network TV series, they fall between the other CMT TV shows we are tracking (i.e. Nashville and Still the King).
What do you think? Did you watch the first season of the Sun Records TV series? Do you think CMT should have cancelled or renewed it for season two?
Very unhappy
I loved the show. The people i grew up watching and listening to their music. I would love to see more .Please bring it back.
Very, very disappointed
Very, very disappointed. The ending seemed almost made for another season.
I am very disappointed that they are not renewing Sun Records. I enjoyed it very much.
Very sorry to hear there will not be Season 2 of this great series! I thought it was the best portrayal of that special time in music history yet, and there have been many. All the actors were outstanding, the production was superb and the Memphis location put it over the top. Too bad it wasn’t a Showtime, HBO or Netflix piece – would have had a much wider audience and different demographic than CMT. I feel bad for the actors who clearly put their hearts and souls into this excellent series.
I watched the 1st Season hoping for it to be a lot better, i gave it a ( D )
The Historical inaccuracies were ridiculous. The acting with some of the actors was horrible, namely of Sam Phillips and Dewey Phillips being the worst. The Hot Babe portraying Marion Keisker was the Best out of all of them. It took me until today ( 3 weeks later ) to watch the last episode, that’s how much i was Bored with this show. If there were going to be a Season 2, i would not watch it.
Pretty much agree about the acting (or WAY overacting), but I would’ve kept watching as it appeared to be going into a better musical direction.
I am so upset to read that this show will not continue to a second season. I do not like television these days. Most shows are meaningless to me.
There are many baby boomers that now have time to watch tv. (retiring)
Bring back Sun Records. It is a great show!
I watched the first season and am on the verge of tears that they are not bringing it back, I am very disappointed that we won’t have this series anymore. It was a real hit with me being from that generation and all the memories it brought back of my early years, I normally go to bed at 8:00 pm but on Thursday night I would stay up until 10:00 just so I could watch. How can they just leave you hanging not knowing what happened with Sam, the record company, Jerry Lee, Johnny and Elvis, the more I write… Read more »
Very disappointed. Thought it was very interesting on how the music business was ran during that era. Thought the acting was very good. Hope it comes back.
I’m heart broken:-( I loved this show, It was hard to wait to the next week!!!! Loved all the actors and the story.
The major issue I have with the series is it’s abandonment of historical accuracy. I’ve heard people say it’s a drama, and that may be true, but it’s about real people, and honestly, the real story is better. It also sets a dangerous precedent when we tamper with history, people don’t know the difference and it can lead to tragic circumstances if it becomes a trend, even from the most insignificant places evil can arise. That being said, I thought the actors did a fantastic job and the sets, for the most part were great…but I’m glad it’s cancelled
With so many simple inaccuracies in this series, it was hard to believe the big issues. For instance, it was Elvis’ mom and Dad who came to the theater to get Elvis to Dewey’s studio the day Elvis’ record was first played and not Sam & Marion. If that little inaccuracy couldn’t be told truthfully, then how true is the affair between Sam & Marion as graphically as it was portrayed…..or the beating depicted on Colonel Parker by his gambling “buddies”. The actors in this series played their parts exceptionally well and the settings of the late 40’s and early… Read more »
