Tonight, FOX is airing the season finale of Terra Nova, the network’s latest foray into science fiction. Does the TV series have a chance at returning for a second season or will it be cancelled instead?
On Terra Nova, our planet has been over-developed and is overcrowded. Mankind’s only chance for survival is to make use of a newly discovered fracture in time and try to colonize pre-historic Earth. The Shannon family is chosen to participate but they find their new home is far from paradise. The cast includes Jason O’Mara, Shelley Conn, Landon Liboiron, Allison Miller, Naomi Scott, Alana Mansour, Stephen Lang, and Christine Adams.
The TV show debuted on September 26th with a pair of installments. They attracted an average of a 3.1 rating in the 18-49 demographic and 9.22 million total viewers. It was third in its timeslots and held viewers through the two hours, a good indication that they’d be back the following week. And, they did return. The third episode drew about the same as the first two episodes.
Unfortunately, that didn’t last. Week three fell by 19% in the demo. Over the course of the season, the numbers have fluctuated quite a bit week to week, hitting a low of a 2.1 in the demo three times. Terra Nova currently averages a 2.5 in the all-important demo and 7.6 million viewers. It’s the seventh most-watched scripted series on the network, out of 14, and currently has a “C” on our season ratings report card. That’s not bad but certainly not a shoe-in for renewal either. It doesn’t help that the show is very expensive to produce.

In September, FOX head Kevin Reilly said that, because of the additional production time needed, a decision would have to be made, “Before the first of the year, at the latest. We couldn’t wait until the spring and see how everything else plays out; otherwise, we would never be able to deliver the following year.”
That decision has now been delayed until sometime in 2012. O’Mara recently tweeted, “Decision to pick up #TerraNova for S2 deferred to New Year by @FOXBroadcasting. Everyone involved remains confident and optimistic.”
While this delay doesn’t mean that the show is history, the network isn’t in any hurry to give it a renewal. The network is most likely waiting to see how well new shows Alcatraz and Touch perform before making a commitment to a second season of Terra Nova. If it does gets renewed, depending on how long they wait to make a decision, the episodes may not be ready until mid-season. Given the budget and the ratings, it seems unlikely to get more than a 13 episode order, if it returns at all.
What do you think? Do you hope that Terra Nova gets renewed for a sophomore season or should it be cancelled to make way for something else?

If this show doesnt continue it would be disappointing. I really hope with all my might they continue it!!!!!!!! If they don’t i willl be very disappointed
Sure would like to see the Second season of Terra Nova, it is tiresome having only Cops and Hospital shows to watch. I really dislike the reality shows that fill the airways. Don’t care a flip about Biggest loser, American idol, Mike and lMolly, ect. ect. ect.
Yes! Renew it, please! It has so much potential. Just get some decent writers and it should do fine. Make it less disney and more jurassic park meets Avatar
I agree with many of the comments above. There are lot of programs on TV currently that my family and i would not want to waste our precious little down time watching together (reality Tv, dumb comedies, etc…). Terra Nova is a refreshing, entertaining, action-packed exception to that observation. Fox, Please give this series a chance and renew it.
I watched this show with my kids and we couldn’t wait until the next show aired. So what we did was tape two or three shows and watch them over again to satisfy our hunger until the next new show aired. It is an amazing show a change of pace from those stupid comedies ( although some are pretty funny/good).
Please bring it back for a 2nd.3rd.4th season and maybe longer.
PRETTY PLEASE !!!!
Terra Nova is an awesome and welcome new show, filled with adventure from week to week. I do believe there should be more action re-dinosaurs threatening the new found Terra Nova compound to add a little more excitement because it is portrayed in the time of the dinosaurs after all, along with the trouble the sixers are causing. I don’t think the writers give the new shows a chance and before you know it , it is removed just like off the map which I think was great. So please listen to your viewers and bring back Terra Nova.
Give Terra Nova the chance it deserve’s. Almost everything else is some reality crap we need this non-reality show.
I miss Terra Nova. There isn’t anythings else to watch but doctor and cop shows.
terra nova better be renewed or fox will be in for a war
I have found Terra Nova to be the most unique and interesting new show on the horizon. It is a very nice change from the continuous comedies that continue to be offered (and that I NEVER watch!) I do hope that Terra Nova continues to explore its new habitat and see what other challenges the Shannons and other members of the colony come across.
The most interesting new show to have been aired in 2011!!!!!!!
terra nova looks like its gonna turn out like of the map, man i miss off the map, i wish it would come back
It would be a great shame to have Terra Nova go the way of the dinosaurs. It has been a great mix of suspense, intrigue and family values. Sure there has been violence and corruption but that is also found in real life.
Bring it back!!!!
“Terra Nova” IS an Enjoyable trip into Time Travel, Dinosaurs, adventure and a social Group that makes it Hard to wait until the following Monday Night – for another episoide!!!!! Keep up the Great Work & 5 of my friends and family are MISSING Our Show of “Terra Nova”!!!! P L E A S E make the Next Season HAPPEN!!!!!!!!
Anxious & Waiting
Terra Nova was one show that finnaly got the whole family to set down together and spend time together. Watching the action packed show was a family event. Cancellation of the show would be a big disapointment to all.
Terra Nova had all the potential in the world; time travel, dinosaurs, and future societies but came short of everything they seemed to show. The show was boring weakly written and acted and the occasional dinosaur sighting was worse than the B rated movies on the SyFy. This show was one of the worst science-fiction that should never be compared to the great sci-fi series.
