Tonight marks the end of The Astronaut Wives Club TV show on ABC — at least for now. The network has yet to officially cancel or renew the series for a second season. How’s the show done in the ratings? Should it come back or did tonight’s finale properly end the series?
Based on the book by Lily Koppel, The Astronaut Wives Club focuses on seven women who were key players behind some of the biggest events in American history. As America’s astronauts were launched on death-defying missions, the lives of their young wives were transformed — seemingly overnight — from military spouses to American royalty. The cast includes Yvonne Strahovski, Dominique McElligott, Odette Annable, Joanna García, Erin Cummings, Azure Parsons, Zoe Boyle, Bret Harrison, Aaron McCusker, Wilson Bethel, Kenneth Mitchell, and Desmond Harrington.
The show debuted in mid-June to a 1.1 rating in the 18-49 demographic with 5.51 million viewers. That was a mediocre start. The demo was pretty low but total viewership wasn’t bad for a summer series.
Unfortunately, both the demo and general viewership took a big tumble in week two — and the numbers fell much lower as the season progressed. Last week’s installment matched a series low in the demo (a 0.6 rating) and hit a new low in viewership with 3.2 million.
Looking at the network’s summer ratings, Astronaut Wives Club has been performing about the same as their other scripted fare — The Whispers, Mistresses, and Rookie Blue. None of them have been doing very well but the network needs some scripted shows to air during the summer months.
Based on the ratings, it seems like ABC should cancel Astronaut Wives Club and let the story end with tonight’s finale. However, they certainly could decide that it’s worth give a second round next summer.
But, what do you think? Do you like The Astronaut Wives Club TV show on ABC? If you ran the network, would you cancel it or renew it for a second season? Was tonight’s finale a satisfying conclusion to the series?
Loved the history behind the show, I am waiting to buy the DVD for the Seniors I work with to watch. They will love it, I did.
Loved it and they should renew it. 1st series i’ve seen that told a story of actual events point by point!
Absolutely loved it and am looking forward to see how will the second season be
They can’t do a season two. There was never that option. It was always a 10 episode mini series based on a book. The story was finalized in the final episode.
Oh, you mean that is all the story from the book?
Watched every episode. Loved to see the “other side” of the space program – the women who were the true rocks. Blast off to Season 2!
ABC gave their usual hype about this show., only to disappoint down the road. Something my husband & I enjoyed watching together. Loved the retro everything, like having a piece of Mad Men back in our viewing diet. Fine tuning memories of the space program & so much more. The politics, competition, image, tragedy, triumph, friendships…had it all.
I watched it & really like it. I think it was a great wrap up of the show. But too bad they went thru it SO Fast. I think they should have spent a lot more time going into the depth & history of each event in the Space Race instead of Flying thru it at Breakneck Speed. I’m not really interested in what they did after as much as what happened during. I think if they ReVamped it, they should spend MORE Time on what was Happening during all these Space Events. I mean my gosh, Apollo 13 is… Read more »
I looked forward to females carrying a show and a reflection of the changing times of the 60’s, Bring it back!
Loved it! DVR was set. I completely enjoyed so much about the show. I hope it returns and I would encourage more shows that are similar. Thank you! Hope to see my Astronaut wife next season!
This was the best TV series my wife and I have watched since the Sopranos. We’d DVR it every week. We loved the storyline, historical significance/references and the way the two intertwined (the Charles Lindbergh cameo gave me goosebumps). Another season is warranted. Thank you for such a fine production.
I LOVED the show and would be disappointed to see it end. Now that we know what happened to their futures, they could still come up with great scripts that showed us how they got there. Loved the historical basis and time period.
This was a wonderful show. The history, the acting, the time period scenery/ settings were all second to none. I thoroughly enjoyed this show. I truly hope it is renewed. If it isn’t, I would contend that is a marketing error. I had no plans of watching it as it seemed silly. My sister highly recommended recommended it. After one episode, I was hooked. It brought back memories of my childhood and my parents. Well done!
Don’t know if the network agrees, but for myself personally, I WOULD watch a second season. I think it might be interesting to see how the characters react to the changing space program. From being ‘gods’ at the beginning to a more normalized view, would be nice to see the transition from within the space program. As the space program changes, how do the astronauts and their families change? What are they thinking? Lots of good character-driven stories there! After that, I believe the series should probably end.
We loved the the show in my house. We had the DVR set to record each episode and I’ve never missed one. It’s great to have good shows back on television!
PLEASE DO NOT STOP THIS SHOW! It has great history and the acting is awesome! The finale was awesome too, but I think more can be added for a second season!
