The peacock network has decided to cut their season order of The Cape from 13 to 10 episodes. Production of the TV series will shut down this week, the latest sign that the show will be cancelled.
The Cape follows Vince Faraday (David Lyons), an honest cop who finds himself framed for a series of murders and presumed dead. Fueled by a desire to reunite with his family (Jennifer Ferrin, Ryan Wynott) and to battle the criminal forces that have overtaken their home city, Vince becomes “The Cape” — a vigilante and his son’s favorite comic book superhero. Others in the cast include James Frain, Keith David, Summer Glau, Dorian Missick, Martin Klebba, and Vinnie Jones.
The series has been a disappointment for NBC in the ratings and Monday’s numbers were the worst so far. The TV series debuted on January 9th with a special two-hour event that attracted a decent 2.6 in the 18-49 demographic and 8.45 million total viewers. Eight days later, episode three of The Cape dropped a huge 30% in the demo, to a 1.8 rating and 6.22 million. Episode four’s ratings fell another 11% to a 1.6 demo rating and 5.84 million viewers. Monday’s hit a new low with a 1.5 and 5.343 million.

The show currently averages a 1.9 in the demo and 6.46 million viewers. After just five episodes, it’s become one of the lowest-rated scripted series on the network, tying with Chuck.
For months, NBC has had The Event slated to return to the Mondays at 9pm timeslot on February 28th. When that happens, only eight episodes of The Cape will have aired. Word is that the network is considering delaying The Event for another week to finish off The Cape’s season. If that doesn’t happen, it seems unlikely that NBC will find a place to air the leftover pair of episodes.
It’s even more unlikely that The Cape will be renewed for a second season or end with any kind of resolution.
What do you think? Is The Cape doomed to be cancelled? What could have been done differently? Is it better than The Event?
UPDATE: NBC has delayed the return of The Event by one week. Episodes nine and 10 of The Cape are expected to air on February 28th, finishing the season.

Watched the first two hour episode of the Cape. HORRIBLE – Another network cliche.
This could go on to be a simple mans superman with baggage. Why not let it play for one year.
The whole reason I started watching this show is for the same reason I started watching TSCC (really awesome and unfairly cut show btw) was because of Summer Glau. I am wondering why they have not given her more scenes??? I know for me that is why I tune in every Monday night!

I think show is pretty good original and not original,,,, yes it borrows from other shows but not much on TV or movies is original. now NBC had A show called life and killed it with no ending no wonder cable TV HBO, SHOW TIME AND OTHER do well NETWORK S never give anything a chance but the fan did bringing back CHUCK and family guy. case in point the show Vegas run several season James Cann left the show and was replace by Tom Selleck and the show ended on a cliff hanger with one character ready to have… Read more »
well nbc is an ass!!!!! excuse me for my language but its true for the past two and half yrs they been cancelling alot of shows like one of my fav was american gladiator(reboot verison) i watching that during the summer when all the shows went on hiatus during the summer and nbc cancelled it. knight rider(reboot verison) was a decent show but in the end nbc cancelled and didnt bother give it a chance. heres another example where nbc really made the biggest mistake, two yrs ago nbc decided to air southland on tv and then cancelled after one… Read more »
If they cancel the show I might just stop watching new shows all together. I will continue to watch the shows that I’ve been watching but nothing new. Why bother if they will just cancel it anyway. I like both The Cape and The Event. Both are different then the typical shows.
I can not believe they are going to cancel the Cape. Cancel all those reailty show the suck not an actual good show that has some creativity to it.
I love this show!! It is one of the better of the new series that have been on. I love David Lyons as “The Cape”. His determination to get back to his family shows a sweet and caring side of a dad. Which in many shows you dont see the sensetive side of a man. His love for his family is what makes me tune in very Monday just hoping his is one step close to getting his family back. If NBC cancelles this show they will lose loyal viewers.
C’mon guys. The Cape is not top-notch, but it certainly does not deserve a cancellation. It airs for me on Monday, at the exact same time slot against huge hits like “Bachelor” (that has 15 seasons and a huge fanbase). When my wife insists we watch The Bachelor, what can I do?
Change the Cape to air against Simpsons, or Two and a half Men, I would take the Cape any day.
I would never waste my money on dvd series 1st season, you never know from one week to the next what show is going to get cancelled. How do you (networks) get your numbers is most likely
not very accurate, do you ask your kids, wife, relatives? To cancel a show without a final is just
stupid. Show me the money! Sponsors show me the ratings! Go on cancel all you want it will bite you in the **s someday.
The problem with this show is, that it too much like a comic book, for a mainstream audience. The hero (Vince Faraday) is framed for a crime he didn’t commit and believed to be dead. HULK wants his plot back! His allies are a motley crew of carnies (The Carnival of Crime). The last season of Heroes, the show that was canceled to clear the way for The Cape, featured a carnival of its own. His partner is wealthy and secretive hacker, (Orwell) complete with her own catchphrase, “Orwell is watching”. The Shadow knows when his being ripped off. His… Read more »
Joe’s comment “this show stinks, it deserves to be cancelled” sums it all up. Amazing that anyone could defend this mess. Keith David & Summer Glau are two great actors that deserve better and need this stinker off their resume; that the network aired this trash is a very bad signal. What were you thinking!
This show stinks, it deserves to be canceled. I’ve watched every episode so far because I wanted to like it but it’s garbage.
They should let DVD and BluRay sales decide the fate of the cape. There has to be enough time for comic-related items to be marketed to the kids who don’t watch NBC often, but spend their time reviewing movies and leaving oil stains on the pages of new comics at their local comic shops. I say, “Give it a chance to catch before deciding to cancel”.
I hate to see “THE CAPE” cancelled. I really enjoy the show and all of the characters. “Happy Town” was another show that I really enjoyed that was cancelled. I am waiting for “Human Target” to be cancelled even though I like the show.
