Back in July, TNT announced that The Closer would be back for a seventh season of 15 episodes. The series has been the top performer for the cable channel and the most-watched TV show on ad-supported cable television.
Now, TNT has announced The Closer is coming to an end. The press release notes that the decision came from series star Kyra Sedgwick.
Here’s the official press release…
TNT Announces Final Season of Landmark Hit THE CLOSER
TNT’s long-running, breakout hit THE CLOSER will wrap up its phenomenal run with a final season in 2011. The difficult decision to conclude the series with season seven was made by Kyra Sedgwick, the Emmy-winning star of THE CLOSER.
“It’s impossible to fully express our appreciation to Kyra Sedgwick, series creator James Duff and all of the other talented people who brought THE CLOSER to TNT viewers,” said Steve Koonin, president of Turner Entertainment Networks. “THE CLOSER was a pivotal series in setting a new course for TNT’s original programming, while also serving as a prime example of the storytelling strength possible on cable television.”
“I cannot fathom how difficult it will be to say goodbye to the incredible family we’ve created on THE CLOSER,” Sedgwick said. “I will always be grateful to James Duff for his love and friendship, as well as for creating such a rich and complex character who I have loved living with year after year. Mike, Greer, Rick and all of our outstanding cast and crew are forever in my heart. I want to thank TNT and Warner Bros. Television, as well as the incredible fans of THE CLOSER, for all of their unwavering support over the last seven years.”
THE CLOSER proved to be a resounding success after its debut on TNT in 2005. The series – which is produced for TNT by The Shephard/Robin Company, in association with Warner Bros. Television – was created by Duff, who serves as executive producer with Greer Shephard, Michael M. Robin, Rick Wallace and Sedgwick. In its seventh and final season in 2011, THE CLOSER will reach its 100th episode. Production of the 15-episode season will start in spring 2011.
“Kyra Sedgwick has distinguished herself not only as an extraordinary actress, but as a remarkable set leader and presence on THE CLOSER,” said Peter Roth, president of Warner Bros. Television. “The series has literally changed the face and course of both TNT and Warner Bros. Television, and we will always be grateful for all that she has contributed toward that success.”
“Kyra blazed a new trail in the television landscape with her performance as Brenda Leigh Johnson,” said Michael Wright, executive vice president and head of programming for TNT, TBS and Turner Classic Movies (TCM). “Like her many fans, we will miss her terribly, and we will be forever grateful for the time we got to spend with her.”
THE CLOSER is currently in the midst of concluding its sixth season. This past summer, the series was the foundation of TNT’s strong Monday night lineup, which featured the introduction of the new hit series Rizzoli & Isles.
THE CLOSER and Rizzoli & Isles currently rank as basic cable’s top two series of all time. In 2010, both series averaged more than 8 million viewers, marking a first for a basic cable network. THE CLOSER also kept up the pace by growing its deliveries compared to season five.
What do you think? Are you sorry to hear The Closer is ending? What would you like to see happen in the series finale?

I love this show. I agree with the others. I was extremely disappointed to learn this was the final season. I truly wish Kyra would reconsider.
I cannot tell u how sorry I am to see this wonderful series end !!! Krya has been the BEST actress on Tv and everyone loves her as Brenda……Hope some one can change her mind………Also the whole cast is great….You even get to HATE Pope
I wish that TNT would keep this show, it is one of the best on TV. Kara is great!! I love the way she shows her flaws with eating chocolate and all, we can relate to her. This is a mistake to lose this show!
I work and my after work time is always busy with “life”, but I always made sure I made time for The Closer. It is such a class program and I don’t want it to end. I watch very little TV, but I loved this show. Please change your mind!!!!!!
I have so much enjoyed “The Closer” and I am certainly old enough to tell you I have set through many want-a-be hits and few made it, this one did. All the character picked for the series were super and whoever did the picking did very well. I so hate for it to go, it will leave a large hole in my viewing on Monday night. We knew it couldn’t last forever, just wanted it to, lol. I realize there has to be some things that you don’t like about a program, but I am about to be really sad,… Read more »
Im not really the type of person to get hooked on a show, but this isnt just any show..IM ADDICTED! Gonna miss it soo much!! Her skill absolutely amazes me, theres not s single actress like her! Forever a fan!
My husband and I really look forward to this show every Monday that it is on. Kyra is a great closer and I hope she will close the last season in her usual spectacular surprise. It would be great if she got pregnant.
Now what do I do on Monday night at 9:00. I am devastated that the show will end in the 7th season. It has been a staple in my date book since the pilot. It could have been TNT’s Law & Order! Thank you for great TV Entertainment!

I went through a depression when I heard THE CLOSER was ending. I can’t begin to explain how much I’ll miss all the characters. They, each, had such vital roles – even Buzz. Provenza is one of my faves. I don’t see the sense in ending such an incredible series. I agree with above, just suck it up and take one for the team – continue the series. What could be more wonderful in life than providing such great entertainment for our world today. Such great humor and subthemes. I love the fact the main character is MARRIED. I love… Read more »
I am a loyal and faithful fan of this show from day one. Kyra made tv viewing a truly engmatic anticipation each week under her character’s devotion and style. For all the actors on this show, you made this viewers tv night enjoyable and exciting considering most series bomb out after the first or second season. When unable to catch on cable, I was elated that TNT brought it to “computerland.” I will sorely miss Brenda Johnson and her entire team, plus the dynamics her character brought to relationships including intimate, family, and her police team. Kyra you are an… Read more »
My husband and I have so enjoyed Kyra in “The Closer. It is such a refreshing and entertaining show. All of the actors are such “Down to Earth” characters. We look so forward to summer when this show is shown. Why does it have to end? I guess all goood things come to an end–what why, when you have such a hit???!!!!! Kyra, please reconsider.
Oh my husband and I are so disappointed the Closer will be no more. Kyra is fantastic and the writers are wonderful. This show is really the best detective, police, etc. show on TV whether it be cable or network tv. I would hope the cast and producers would reconsider and continue for a couple more seasons. We so look forward to watching this show each week and never get tired of watching the reruns. All in all wishing you all well and hope to see Kyra in another wonderful series.
I totally adore and respect the character of Brenda Lee Johnson. I DO NOT want this to come to an end. I Schedule my Monday’s around her series. If we could keep her, any way at all, I wish she would stay.
Warm Wishes
This totally devastated me!!! Had no idea this was to be the final season. Kyra sucks!! I can’t believe she is leaving, probably a prima dona that wasn’t given a big fat raise. What happened to acting for the love of acting, and giving your fans what they want? This is the best show on cable. Wow!!! When you have a hit like this, if you love what you do you ride it out for all it’s worth. My god, they are bringing back Dallas for gosh sake. Help, I am in remake redo revamp Hell!!! Please have a heart… Read more »
I am devastated…It is my favorite show, I will miss it terribly….So upset
It is the number one show in my book and I will miss the whole cast of characters – they were such a good mix of personalities. I wish them all well and hope to see them soon in something else but I am devastated this is the last season.
