To very little surprise, the CW has cancelled one of its few remaining sitcoms, The Game. Is this the end for the series or could it still return?
Created by Mara Brock Akil, The Game began as a spin-off of Akil’s long-running comedy, Girlfriends. The series centers around a first year medical student (Tia Mowry) who chooses to follow her pro-football boyfriend (Pooch Hall) to San Diego. Others in the cast include Brittany Daniel, Coby Bell, Hosea Chanchez and Wendy Raquel Robinson.
The first sitcom to debut on the CW network, The Game averaged 2.3 million viewers in season one. For season two, the ratings dropped to 2.07 million and a .96 rating in the 18-49 demographic. This season, it’s fallen to an average of 1.68 million viewers and a tiny 0.7 rating in the demo, in part because it was given a Friday night timeslot.
The CW is essentially getting out of the sitcom business and has cancelled The Game after 64 episodes. There had been talks about changing the show’s format to an hour-long dramady, to make it more compatible with the network’s other programming. That was seen as a long-shot at best and actually would have created its own set of challenges for syndication.
Though The Game only has 64 episodes, BET recently signed a syndication deal to air the first two seasons and season three will be added this Fall. To increase the show’s number of episodes, there have been discussions between the cable channel and CBS (the show’s studio) about co-funding original episodes. The deal would likely come with some cost-cutting measures.
There’s been no further word on the potential deal with BET so, as of right now, “The Wedding Episode” is the series’ last.
If The Game isn’t rescued from cancellation, are you satisfied with the way the sitcom ended — with Melanie and Derwin finally getting married?

I am not happy with the way the game has ended. I wanted to know what would happen to jason and kelly and their who situation, what would happen to tasha and kelly’s friendship, and what would happen to derwin, melanie, the baby and janay. I really hope they would come back for a fourth season.
I’m very happy at the fact that Melanie and Derwin got married but I’m upset that the season is ending!!! THE GAME is the best show ever. Keep this show on don’t let it end. People still need to know what happened to Kelly, Jason and Camille. What about Melanie and Derwin’s new baby, like can she handle it? IDK! That’s why we need this show.
im not happy AND happy how it ended. i really wanted to see what happens to jason and kelly! imglad, though that derwin and melanie got married, but curious about how the baby situation will work out. i really hope there is a season 4
I am not satisfied with the way that The Game ended because I feel like some of the issues that couples other than Melanie and Derwin had were rushed or not addressed at all. Also, I want to know what happened with Melanie, Derwin, Janay and the new baby. I think it would be interesting to see how that all panned out. We need a fourth season to tie up all the loose ends, preferably to air on a night other than Friday. Most young people are not at home to watch tv on Friday and Saturday nights.
Kudos to “The Game,” I absolutely love this show. The characters are perfect and the concepts and scenarios allow many people to relate. I am rooting for Season 4. I am happy Derwin and Mel were married but deep down I still have faith that the baby is not Derwin’s. There are so many questions left unanswered: What will become of Kelly and Tasha’s friendship?, Kelly and Jason’s relationship, and will Janae ever be out of the picture? Keep “The Game” going!
The game is one of the few black sitcoms that is truly entertaining and real. It would be a shame to end it like it did. I got into it late and then its off the air. I hope someone picks it up but keep the same characters.
I love the show. It’s one of the few that I set time out of my schedule to watch. I want to watch the characters continue to grow. Please give us another season and a proper ending.
this sucks!!! I know sooo many people who are just finding out and getting into the show. us fans need our Game fix and the new comers are anious to see what happens next since they’ve missed so much. I just hope with this “cost cutting” talk BET doesn’t ruin the show and make it’s syndication horrible. alos, a new contract needs to be formatted to continue the show maybe change the name of the show to the play or the pastime… I don’t know just keep this show going!!!!
I love this show please do not take it off the air. I loved Derwin, please dont change the actors/actresses, they all are very good. The show would not be the same if you do.
omg i really liked this show it was so awsome well if it has to end im glad that mel and derwin r getting married but kellys break up was horroble
I am a script writer, and this sitcom is top notch from the perfectly matched actors to the exquisite weekly story lines. Hats off to the writers, and the creator of the show. Quality shows are hard to come by these days, losing The Game would be utterly ridiculous. The network that picks up this sitcom and airs it on a week day or Sunday at a prime time, will definitely increase its viewers, guaranteed!
I started watching the show late in the series and I have to say that it is truly entertaining. Each episode takes a fun but somewhat realistic look into the life behind the football scene. It would be a tragedy to end it without giving the fans (myself included) the opportunity to say goodbye.
This was the best sitcom ever. Everything about it was real and true. Please do not cancel this series. I am a true fan, and I am waiting for more to come…..
hell no! I miss Derwin very much. If they bring a fourth series, please do NOT change any of the actors/actresses
