Though ABC didn’t have much luck with their Eastwick drama, the network is trying another kind of supernatural series, The Gates, for the summer months. Will this one make it to season two?
The Gates revolves around a big city cop who moves his family to a quiet gated community where many of the residents aren’t exactly what they appear to be. The ensemble cast includes Rhona Mitra, Colton Haynes, Frank Grillo, Janina Gavankar, Chandra West, Luke Mably, James Preston, Marisol Nichols, Skyler Samuels, Travis Caldwell, Victoria Platt, and Justin Miles.
The series debuted on Sunday, June 20th, to an unimpressive 1.5 rating in the 18-49 demographic and just 4.78 million viewers. Considering all of the network’s promotion, this was a disappointing start. The premiere ranked first in the demo and second in total viewers for the timeslot.

In week two, viewership for The Gates dropped by about 30%. The demo fell to a 1.1 rating and total viewership came down to only 3.24 million. That put the show in second place in the demo and in third place for viewers.
Though ABC has lower expectations for this summer show, the ratings do not bode well for the show’s future on the network. Unless more people start watching, it’s hard to imagine that we’ll be seeing season two.
For now, let’s hope they show all 13 episodes of season one. The Gates is expected to run until September 19th but, with ratings like these, it’s not hard to imagine the network replacing them with something else.
What do you think? Is The Gates worth watching or would you just cancel it already? (Want to know how Scoundrels is doing? Go here.)

Best show on TV. PLEASE keep it going. ABC has to advertise it much better though.
Keep the Gates, I think it’s a great show. It’s great to be able to get swept away by some fantasy instead of being bashed with reality shows constantly!!!
Keep it. It’s a great show..
I came across this show by accident. I really enjoy “The Gates”, and hope ABC includes this show in their fall lineup. I loved Moonlight and we all know what the”COMMIE BROADCASTING SYSTEM did with that show. I don’t watch CBS anymore because they do not give a show a chance, e.g., Moonlight, Three Rivers.
Please keep The Gates on tv for season 2,3,4,5,6,7,……………GREAT SHOW!!!!!!!!!
I watch this every Sunday. It might not be in the best time slot to get the best ratings, but I actually enjoy watching it right after True Blood on HBO. It would be a shame if ABC didn’t give The Gates a second chance, especially after renewing junk like The Rookie.
i like the gates because it has so much suspense. you have vampires witches, werewolfs and much more. it keeps me on the edge of my pc chair. i think you just have to air the series during the week days around 8 or 9pm on a dull mon. tues or wed. rest assured it will take off.
Yeah let’s create a vampire tv show and ari it on the same night as TrueBlood? of course viewership is going to be down. ABC may have had a shot at competing against HBO but they put the show in the wrong time slot for it. You can’t expect people to want to watch another vamp show five minutes after they just got done watching what Sookie, Bill, and Eric have been up to. In the long run, the people who claim Gates is an imitation are wrong. It brings something unique in that it brings more depth to the… Read more »
Well, for starters, its no wonder the viewership isn’t what it could be; putting it on Sunday nights at 10:00pm is a show killer time slot! Hello ABC? Why waste all the money in production if you’re only going to doom a show to failure at a time everyone is going to bed to get up for work / school the next day? Monday mornings are a big deal. We need our sleep! Do you really think hit shows like Lost, American Idol, Two & a half Men (and yes, there are more) would have survived in a Sunday 10pm… Read more »
Keep It Please- It fits well with the Summer- An Excellent show
xi knows nothing…The Gates…KEEP IT! Great Show
I LOVE The Gates!!!! Please oh please don’t cancel it!!!! That already happened with another of my favorites… Happytown! I swear, I never seem to pick a show that I get to finish!!!!!
Keep it it is a great show!!!!
It sucks. It’s a rip off of the Moonlight saga. It tries, too desperately, to set up the same dynamic of vampires against werewolves, and witches and others thrown in just for good measure.
I *loved* Eastwick. It was good, not contrived and not trying overly hard to be something that it wasn’t.
Great show! My girlfriend and I never miss an episode. I hope ABC doesn’t drop the ball and cancel another good show, here.
