Is there still a future for The Kids Are Alright? Recently, star Mary McCormack spoke with The Los Angeles Times about her efforts to save the cancelled ABC TV show.
Set in the 1970s, the sitcom centers on the Clearys, an Irish-Catholic family living on the outskirts of Los Angeles. The cast includes Michael Cudlitz, Mary McCormack, Sam Straley, Caleb Foote, Sawyer Barth, Christopher Paul Richards, Jack Gore, Andy Walken, and Santino Barnard.
In the interview, McCormack says she thinks ABC cancelled The Kids Are Alright before its time:
It feels too short. It’s hard to get something really funny and nuanced and moving, and I thought our show was all those things. There’s a lot of stuff I don’t understand about how shows find new homes, but you do hear about it. And I guess because you hear about it, your fans think there’s hope. There are just so many networks now — networks I’ve never heard of. So I’m still holding out a little hope that someone will look at us and see we’re like the already housebroken cute shelter pet that needs someone to adopt them.”
What do you think? Did you watch The Kids Are Alright? Would you have watched a second season?
Oh my gosh, yes- please bring back The Kids are Alright! I love this show. It’s smart, spot on and so funny! It cracked me up – out loud. I grew up in that exact time period of the early 70’s and this show perfectly portrays the time period. Also, our next door neighbor’s, The Johnson’s, were a Catholic family with six kids and I have to wonder if one of the writer’s was one of my old next door neighbors? 😉
Yes, this was a fantastic show, and should be continued, if not on ABC, who doesn’t give many good programs a chance, on another channel or streaming service. With ABC’s history of cancelling shows too soon, many people don’t bother tuning in, because they are afraid the show won’t last.
Yes. Intelligent, funny, entertaining, and overall excellent show. I was a kid in the seventies, catholic, (attended 12 years of catholic school) so this show is very relevant and poignant to me. Yes I’m a baby boomer which means I’m not in the usually coveted 18 – 49 age group, ButI along with lots of my friends enjoyed this show and we all have plenty of disposable income to spend on the products advertised during the show if it’s a money thing. Whoever made the decision to cancel this show is missing out on attracting a large age group of… Read more »
Yes! One of the funniest shows on TV!
I think the show is great and should not be cancelled. The networks today don’t give shows a chance. If the don’t get an instant hit they pull it. Look at Seinfeld and Cheers they both had low ratings to start and both went on for 9 seasons and won Emmys.
This household agrees – The Kids Are Alright needs more seasons! Someone save it please.
Absolutely! And a 3rd, 4th, 5th etc. Check out our Facebook Group The Kids Are Alright Viewers! There are over 2500 members. And our petetition for another season has over 13,500 signatures! https://www.thepetitionsite.com/516/415/212/get-the-kids-are-alright-reinstated/ Please do whatever you can suggest!
I love this show. I can’t believe it was cancelled
Definitely the Kids are Alright should be renewed !!
I can’t imagine why it was ever cancelled in the first place?????
Love this show. Always made me laugh!
It’s too bad this isn’t the 70s because the millions of girls who would have been posting pics from Tiger Beat of Lawrence on their bedrooms walls would have provided the pressure to keep this show on.
This show was awesome! You didn’t give it enough time to really find it’s rhythm! So many great characters here and SO MANY OPPORTUNITIES for creative story lines. Give this show a second chance, please. PLEASE!
Loved the show it was canceled too soon. Give it another chance.
TKAA was the highlight of my TV week……I remember when Everybody Loves Raymond first appeared and had horrible ratings, but they found their place for 8 seasons……please renew this show…..good, funny shows are so hard to come by!
THis is a true family show and shows the kids nowadays the way it was. it was canceled
