TNT has been cleaning house in recent months — cancelling shows like Perception, Dallas, and Franklin & Bash. Will new series The Librarians be cancelled as well or, will it be renewed for a second season?
On The Librarians, Flynn Carsen (Noah Wyle) welcomes four new people to the library organization, to help solve ancient mysteries and recover/protect historical artifacts. Together, they fight against supernatural threats — including the mysterious and immortal Dulaque (Matt Frewer) and the Serpent Brotherhood. The show stars Rebecca Romijn, Christian Kane, Lindy Booth, John Kim, and John Larroquette. Wyle, Jane Curtin, and Bob Newhart recur in their roles from the movies.
The TNT series debuted in early December with a pair of episodes that drew a 1.3 rating in the 18-49 demographic with 5.35 million viewers. That was a solid premiere for a basic cable series.
Unfortunately, the second week’s installment fell more than 35%, to a 0.8 demo rating and 3.37 million. The ratings have gone up and down in the later weeks but haven’t edged higher than a 1.0 in the demo and 4.1 million. Last night marked the season finale.
Though the ratings fell quite a bit after the premiere, The Librarians still performed well for TNT. It’s pretty much matched Rizolli & Isles’ demo numbers and is one of the cable channel’s most-watched programs. Though the cable channel supposedly wants to focus on very edgy material, it looks like a safe bet that The Librarians will be renewed for a second season.
Executive producer Dean Devlin certainly wants to continue with the show and told EW, “The world of The Library is a world I want to live in for the rest of my life. The more we can expand that universe and take it into surprising areas… we want to just see how far we can keep pushing the limits of where the show can go. Hopefully we’ll hear soon about a pick up soon and get back to work. We’re all chomping at the bit to get back into the world of The Library.”
Via Instagram he later said, “I want to thank each and every one of you who tuned in for your support this season. As soon as we hear any news regarding Season 2 of The Librarians you’ll be the first to know!”
But, what do you think? Do you like The Librarians TV show? Should it be cancelled or renewed for a second season?
2/12 update: TNT has renewed The Librarians for a second season. Details here.
Renew!!!! Great show!
Renew! My husband and I, both librarians, LOVE the show! It makes being a Librarian cool!
RENEW!!! Definitely keep this show. I think TNT would be making a huge mistake by canceling this one. Fans of THE LIBRARIAN trilogy movie trilogy have been clamoring for a series since the start.
Keep keep keep! Different show, different concept. Love all the actors on it. Plus John Larroquette!?!?!? How can you not love this show!??!?! Keep it please
Renew!!!!!!
Amazing show that fills a void left from other cancelled shows, especially in the sci-fi / fantasy genre, as well as a group cast as opposed to another couple/lovers crime solving show. Please renew!!!
RENEW!!!!
renew
Keep!!!! I adore the librarians!!!!
For the love of all that is awesome, RENEW!
Please renew. Love this show!
PLEASE keep the Librarians!!! I love this show. I love the science fiction aspect, the humor, the actors, the storylines…Please give it enough time for other folks to find the show. There weren’t many episodes in Season 1 so there wasn’t much time for fans to pass the word along to others.
RENEW!
Please renew this show.
Renew, this show is one of the greats. You have a great cast who’s characters seem to mix well with each other. I watch the shows over and over with my DVR.
