Tonight, NBC airs the ninth episode of their action drama The Player. Is this the last episode? Has the show been cancelled or will it be back with more episodes in 2016?
Set in Las Vegas, The Player follows a huge game in which world events are predicted, gambled upon and influenced by a shadowy elite. Controlling the game is the “The Pitt Boss,” a mysterious Mr. Johnson (Wesley Snipes). “The Dealer” is Cassandra (Charity Wakefield) and she recruits rogue FBI agent Alex Kane (Philip Winchester) as “The Player”. Alex is driven by the need to find out who killed his wife. Damon Gupton also stars.
Debuting on September 24th, The Player got off to a poor start in the ratings, averaging a 1.16 rating in the 18-49 demographic with 4.86 million viewers. The second episode’s numbers were even worse with a 0.95 in the demo and 4.58 million. The numbers have dwindled lower since then.
After the fifth episode, NBC cut The Player’s episode order down to just nine installments but kept the series on the air to finish out its run. The network (and fans) were likely hoping that the numbers would improve once CBS’ highly-rated Thursday night football concluded but it didn’t happen. The Player’s viewership actually dropped even lower.
NBC hasn’t officially cancelled The Player but then, networks rarely officially cancel any of their shows. One thing’s for sure, the network won’t be ordering any more episodes so tonight’s will end up being the defacto series finale. It’s game over for The Player.
They’ve also already committed the show’s timeslot to other programming. Starting January 7th, the Thursdays at 10pm timeslot will be taken over by new series Shades of Blue starring Jennifer Lopez and Ray Liotta.
What do you think? Have you been enjoying The Player TV series? Do you think it should have been cancelled or saved and given more time to prove itself?
I LOVED this show! And now, especially, I feel totally gyped because I will never know what happened to Ginny or why those guns were found. The show is good enough to deserve a second chance! PLEASE, NBC! Bring it back and give it another try. It was one of the best shows on TV–just an intriguing plot and amazing characters. I am truly bummed.
enjoyed the show immensely. keep it on.
Don’t cancel this show! This is my favorite!
I Loved The Show Please Change your mind
Season 2 Sunday night
good show…hope nbc reconsiders, maybe try another time slot
I loved the show!……please change your mind lol!
Looked forward to show. Really like the story line. I hate football! Usually watch NBC, so discovering this show was great. I also watched another show but would usually tape other show to watch this one. I agree it was set up to fail. For this reason I still prefer NBC.
The Player was a good show. Full of action
NBC didn’t give the show a chance. NBC set the show up for failure when they slotted it on Thursday night, competing with How to Get Away With Murder and Thursday Night Football. Now in January, Jennifer Lopez and Ray Liotta will take their time slot With Shades of Blue. It seems to me that NBC didn’t want the show to succeed. They Player started off slow, but the story line picked up. I’m very disappointed that the show didn’t get a chance.
Yes ma’am. I have enjoyed “The Player “. Many of my friends say that they have tivoed it,due to the conflict with “How to get away with murder “
I can’t believe that The Player would even be considered to be canceled. This show is Just to good to cancel. I really dont know why good shows like this dont get watched. But with all the DVR’s, bad marketing and tough time slot. This show deserves another shot. I have done my own research and I put The Player up against Blindspot. So many fans remember Cinemax highly regarded and watched “Strike Back” with Phillip Winchester “Alex” and Blindspot’s Sullivan Stapleton as “Kurt Weller” . So I started asking everyone I knew and even turned to my twitter friends… Read more »

B.S. That was a great show
I WANT TO SEE MORE EPISODE OF THE PLAYER!!! GREAT SHOW!!!
I REALLY got into this show in a way I don’t normally. It really did get better and better as it went along. What sucks the most is that because they just shut things down there was not chance for the writers to offer any sort of closure. Thanks a lot NBC for kicking us in the teeth on a great show.
