Last week, NBC cancelled the Timeless TV show, and then on Saturday, reversed the decision and renewed the time travel drama for a second season. And guess what? The fans’ outcry inspired the Peacock Network to come to terms with Sony Pictures Television on Timeless, season two.
Timeless, which stars Abigail Spencer, Matt Lanter, Malcolm Barrett, and Goran Visnjic, was considered a “borderline” show by NBC, because of its middling broadcast ratings. At first, the network and Sony could not agree, where money was concerned. However, when they saw the huge outcry from fans, in wake of the Timeless cancellation, both parties made it work.
Deadline reports:
“We loved the show creatively hoping for it to have bigger numbers in the fall,” [NBC Chair Bob] Greenblatt said on Sunday. When the network executives convened to discuss its 2017-18 lineup, the questions surrounding Timeless, considered a “borderline” series, were “Can it grow, and do we have place for it”, Greenblatt said. “There was a moment earlier in the week where we said, we have all these shows coming back, new shows. Maybe there is no space (for Timeless). We decided to move away from it.”
Greenblatt and NBC Entertainment president Jennifer Salke were “heartbroken” when they delivered the news to creators Shawn Ryan and Eric Kripke on Wednesday afternoon, as Ryan noted.
Here is what happened next as described by Greenblatt on the NBC upfronts call Sunday.
“And then we woke up the next morning, heard the outcry (from fans). We went back to the drawing board, with our partners at Sony, and we found a way to bring it back. It’s extraordinarily well produced and deserved to come back.”
By Thursday morning, fans’ reaction to the cancellation of Timeless had reached fever pitch, with them rallying to save the show while Sony TV was trying to find a new home for the series on a cable or streaming network.
I hear the core group that worked on making the renewal possible at NBC included Greenblatt, Salke and head of current programming Vernon Sanders.
“We love the show, we just said, let’s figure out a way to bring it back,” Salke said. “We proposed something, they accepted and 40 minutes later Shawn and Eric were tweeting about it,” she said.
That would be the Saturday 10 AM PT joint announcement by Ryan and Kripke on Twitter.
It is unclear whether there was any back-and-forth between NBC and Sony TV over these less-than-72 hours between the cancellation and renewal but I hear that may not have been the case. From what I understand, Timeless will return for a 10-episode second season at the same budget, as exactly the same show and not a low-cost version of it. And NBC executives’ decision may have been driven entirely by listening to what their viewers want and fulfilling their wishes, with no financial strings attached to the renewal.
What do you think? Are you happy that NBC decided to renew Timeless for a second season? Do you plan to watch?
That is great! Even with a 10 episode season, it gives it a chance for a longer future, viewership dictated.
I’m extremely happy. I love this show. NBC went up on the respect scale for listening to the customers.
Excited!! As soon as I heard Timeless had been cancelled..I wrote reviews, tweets, you name it. It was by far the best TV show this year. The show has great chemistry between actors, great story line, clean ..great for family, introduces interesting facts about times and people in history, riveting scenes, unpredictable..like watching a feature film each week. No expense spared each week..the costumes, film sets, the actors adjusting to new characters weekly, a nice romance brewing between the two main stars. So glad it has been renewed…it would be even better to make it 20 plus releases..but I will… Read more »
I am extremely happy to have Timelsss back! My wife and I will now have our “date” night back! We both have a full time job and a small business on the side so TV time is limited, but we will not miss all the new episodes! Hopefully season two will have better ratings so it can continue on and on.
I am so glad that “Timeless” is coming Back, THANK YOU So MUCH.
So excited to hear that Timeless is coming back after all!!! I LOVE this show! It its so well done and I look forward to watching it!!! It is by far my favorite show and I was so heartbroken when it almost didn’t come back!!! I hope it will continue on for more seasons!!! I will keep crossing my fingers!!!
My wife and I are very excited that Timeless will be coming back for season 2!
So glad the decision was reversed! I thought the show was brilliant & something different than what you normally see. The traveling through monumental history points kept it interesting, plus the crazy plots & twists with everything going on with “written house” back home in real time kept me hooked. After the crazy season finale reveal that Lucy’s mom was a part of written house all along, I couldn’t believe they cancelled it after leaving fans with that!!! Thank you for bringing it back! So excited for the premier!
So so happy timeless is back!!! All of us fans cant wait. Thank you NBC and the producer. Any news on when timless will air again ? And will their be a new time slot or same time same day? If any one knows can reply. Thanks . Looking foward to seeing what happens to the team next . Patti
Timeless had me hooked from its first episode. I love the characto both good and bad. I love the history elements and the “what ifs”. Thanks for keeping it for is geeks.
Hooray! NBC, I am so proud of you. You realized you made a mistake by cancelling a wonderful show and you owned it. Finally, a fabulous TV show my whole family can enjoy gets what it deserves–a season two! We will be waiting (sorta) patiently to see what happens to the crew next and looking forward to the new history lessons. Bravo NBC.
VERY happy that it’s coming back and for once a major network listened to the fans & the strong following despite ratings aren’t the only judge of a show’s success anymore with the help of social media.
I’ll always make time for TIMELESS. A wonderful show. I can’t wait to see what happens. Such an interesting story-line – how the changes in history affect the future. The production values are First Class. The eras are re-created with such attention to detail. It’s an enjoyable and fun show to watch. I look forward to it every week. Thank you NBC!!
I am thrilled that Timeless has been renewed!
Oh, and Also, Make sure you put it on a Time slot and day, not up against any heavy hitters like Grey’s Anatomy, or Scandel, or Designated Survivor, or anything NCIS, or Bull, or Criminal Minds or Hawaii 50 or Blue Bloods. Get my point? If you put it up against shows like that, you risk dilution of eyes watching now, granted some of us have the ability to record Timeless later, but not everyone has that ability and will be forced to make choices. Or show it once during the week and again on Saturday night. That would work… Read more »
You’ve eliminated nearly every time slot. A show has to be able to withstand competition since some other ‘good’ show will be up against it.
