Though FOX clearly said that last night’s episode of Wayward Pines was the series finale, there’s still talk of bringing the show back for a second season.
On Wayward Pines, Secret Service Agent Ethan Burke (Matt Dillon) drives to the bucolic town of Wayward Pines, in search of two missing federal agents. One was a former partner and they once had an affair. A truck slams into his car, he wakes up in the local hospital, and things start to get really strange. The cast of this thriller series also includes Terrence Howard, Melissa Leo, Carla Gugino, Toby Jones, Shannyn Sossamon, Charlie Tahan, Reed Diamond, Juliette Lewis, and Tim Griffin.
Regarding the possibility of a second season, showrunner Chad Hodge didn’t have any news to share but didn’t rule out a renewal either. He told THR, “There is no official season two yet, no talks yet. Nothing to report on that front.”
Hodge shared more information with TVInsider and said, “There is some talk, but there’s nothing official. When we wrote that ending, it wasn’t necessarily so that we could have a Season 2, it was just to show that history repeats itself. Obviously it seems like it leaves a window to a Season 2, but that wasn’t the reason we did it. Right now, I’m focused on the new pilot [TNT’s Good Behavior] that I’m doing with [Wayward Pines author] Blake [Crouch].”
Meanwhile, executive producer M. Night Shyamalan is a bit more hopeful. Here’s an excerpt from an interview with Deadline (SPOILERS AHEAD):
DEADLINE: With Charlie Tahan’s character waking up in a rebuilt and seemingly safe town at the end of the finale, it looks and feels like Wayward Pines is perfectly poised for a second season. The numbers are there, the inclination from Fox is there, so are you, Chad and Blake going to head back to Wayward Pines?
M. NIGHT SHYAMALAN: We’re super surprised, excited, humbled by the reaction to Wayward Pines, and I did ask Blake to come over to my house, which he did. We did sit down for a few days, and we talked about all kinds of things, and we both felt very good about our time together. We both made a pact saying if we did decide to do something more here that we would approach it with a very high level of integrity and not let the opportunity dictate it because we’re both happy to walk away.
DEADLINE: Sounds like you are diplomatically saying a Season 2 is in the cards, am I picking that up right?
SHYAMALAN: I’m actually not being diplomatic, I mean, I’m being somewhat diplomatic, but I’m genuinely being as open as I can. The one thing I’m fearful of television is its open-ended nature. I’m such an end backwards kind of filmmaker, storyteller, and that’s what I loved about doing these 10 episodes. I knew where I wanted to go. I knew I wanted the fences to come down. I knew where we were heading for the finale and so we could architecture the 10-episodes in that manner.
So, I am happy to walk away, especially with such a wonderful reaction and all that stuff. But honestly, Blake and I do have an idea.
DEADLINE: And that idea for a Season 2 is? We now have both Matt Dillon and Toby Jones’ characters dead in the finale but could any of the other major actors from Season 1 return?
SHYAMALAN: We have an idea we’ve discussed. That’s all I’ll say.
Will there be a second season of Wayward Pines? For now, according to FOX’s press materials, the series is over.
Could the show be resurrected for another run? Given the success of the first season and FOX’s current ratings struggles, it seems like a very real possibility. As always, we’ll keep you posted.
What do you think? Would you like to see Wayward Pines return for a second season? Would you watch it as part of the regular season or would you prefer another summer season?
The show was an unexpected keeper, my family would definitely tune in for another season – but we need MATT DILLON! Freeze him, make it so that it was a video of him in the elevator to trick Filcher – whatever you have to do – do, because he needs to be around for season 2 or scratch it altogether. We love our Matt! He and his son and the girlfriend can be in cahoots to take back the town. Unfreeze some more key players, big name actors we can fawn over. Another throwback actor who still has it or… Read more »
I think Wayward Pines was a good series, but I would not like to see another second season. The main characters were killed off and their existence was what kept me watching. I did not like the ending, it was disappointing. The remaining characters will not interest me to come back to a second season (even if there is twist). It was a good series while it lasted.
You really need an imagination. To say bc Matt is gone there should not be a season 2. Writer’s are creative they know if they bring back the series Ethan needs to come back. This is after all taking place in the future. David Pilcher may have had something to go back in time. Instead of saying no to a season 2 use your imagination and say you are into a season 2 as long as Ethan some how comes back. I don’t think anyone really liked the ending. This is tv people can come back. We need positive not… Read more »
You are basically talking about making it another comic book series if they do any of that. As for time travel….The only reference to that was putting living beings in suspended animation and waking years later is basically the same as time travel for that being. That’s the closest they came to time travel. As for another season….If done then they’d jump the clock so some twenty something hunk will be Ethan’s son and leading another rebellion. Fighting against a fascist society once again. A huge bore. Especially since they have much bigger problems like finit supplies and too short… Read more »
A season 2 need to be done and ethan need to bringing back on the show, he cannot be die the way its happenning, he’s more smart than that, writers of the show can find out a way to let him survive, he was the key of this show and a wayward pines without matt dillion will be hard to follow he need to come back on some way.
not sure what to say about this show it’s a little hard to get into and kind of gross but also interesting I don’t know what they could do with another season this one seems to end pretty much up in the air so they could take it from there I’d like a good outcome
YES, PLEASE DO IT SEASON 2, ETC. PLEASE
Seriously? Come on. This show is 10 times better than I thought it would be!!!! I loved the show and would like to see it return for many seasons. This really has a lot of potential. What is going on with the kids? What happened to the adults in the 3 years plus that the kid was in a coma? You need at least another season. And what about killing off Matt Dillon? This maybe has been his best acting job in awhile. Bring the guy back. M. Night Shyamalan has his best thing going since The Sixth Sense!!!!!!
We need a Season 2!!!! Loved the show. Loved that it was not exactly like the books. Loved everything but the ending. Please bring the show back but do not start the season with Ben being 3 years in the future. Do a redo and forget that ending. Figure out a way to bring Ethan back and even Harold. Loved those 2. There is always a way to go back in time and change things. Show another persons perspective. Even thought why would David have just 1 Wayward Pines. Why would a rich billionaire like himself not think about how… Read more »
I strongly disagree about going so far off the books. Primarily because the books were much more interesting. If they had followed the books a bit closer (Granted series are forced to make changes so they can shoot within a tighter budget. Following the books too close would probably have been quite expensive) they wouldn’t be at the Under The Dome point where the story is so far off that it defies logic anymore. The Dome only has so much oxygen (Ihavent watched it since the third episode so I don’t know if the dealt with that). Wayward Pines can’t… Read more »
WOW Taylor. And I thoughtI I was a die hard fan, of Wayward Pines. Mr.Shyalaman, This person- Taylor, does have lots of interesting ideas!!! FOX PLEASE CONTINUE WAYWARD PINES.
PLEASE!!!!!
We definitely need a season 2. I actually dvr’d the last episode because I had heard originally that they were not doing a season 2 so I did not want to watch the ending yet. I finally just watched it and I paused many times. 1 hour to do this ending are you kidding me?? They need a season 2. To say that they gave this an ending that if there was no season 2 we would be ok with it. NO freaken way. I loved the show up until this ending. Yes I did not expect that because I… Read more »
I thoroughly enjoyed the series, but really feel like if they were not going to give it a second season they should have let it end with Pam and Teresa standing in the chamber room. The coda was like a slap in the face to say “but you’ll never know how they got here.”
Absolutely LOVED this show, and LOVED seeing Matt Dillon again, he made the show. SO hoping they will renew for a second season. I got my daughter & mother both hooked!
You know I’ve been a staunch supporter of Shyamalan even through all the criticism but at the very last minute of this series that changed and it made me realized why he is reviled by many. That ending felt like a spit in the face to and came off as if Shyamalan was saying, you put all that effort into watching the characters and story develop wonderfully…. FOR NOTHING BECAUSE TWIST!!!!! or I guess in the series case DOUBLE TWIST!!.
Wayward Pines stands on its own, it doesn’t need a second season. The story needs to continue in a new series like ” Splintered Pines”
Come the heck on! Why do we even bother watching great tv anymore if it’s canceled before it even starts? They def have to reconsider a second season. So frustrating! Bring it back. The ending was def left wide open for a season 2.
They could even bring Matt D back by possibly going back to the past etc. many options and scenarios could be explored and adventured. Bad move Fox!
Yes please but with Matt Dillon to return…..
Please give us a full blown summer series of Wayward Pines. I haven’t read the books but I see Ethan hiding out somewhere. Charlie trying to find his mom and make the rest of the first generation ease up but still be able to keep the Abbies out. Plus, where is Pam? I think a lot could be done with this series that would really bring in the viewers from all age groups.
