Moonlight: CBS Cancels Vampire Drama, No Season Two

MoonlightThough things were looking good for a second season of CBS’ vampire show, Moonlight has been cancelled. The show has loyal followers, the ratings were decent, and the series often won its timeslot. What happened?

Essentially Moonlight has been cut for a number of reasons. The rest of the network’s schedule is quite strong in the ratings and it certainly makes no sense to cancel one of the stronger series. If Moonlight were on the ratings-challenged CW, it certainly would have been renewed.

Like Jericho last season, Moonlight has a devout but small audience. Unfortunately, CBS’ decision to resurrect Jericho didn’t work out so well for them. Though many campaigned to get Jericho renewed, fewer people tuned in. CBS likely feels a bit burned by that experience and is reluctant to go down that road again.

The cancellation also stems from the fact that CBS is feeling very confident about their new batch of drama pilots. They’ve given a greenlight for four new dramas this fall and there just wasn’t any room left on the schedule for Moonlight. They know that Moonlight’s audience is unlikely to grow very much and would rather take a chance on a new show.

There’s been much upheaval behind-the-scenes and it’s been reported that the network hasn’t been impressed with the show’s creative development. The ratings were also usually lower than both its lead-in (Ghost Whisperer) and lead-out (Numb3rs).

CBS has given the okay for another season of The Unit. With the network’s full schedule, the drama will likely end up being bumped from Tuesdays and end up on Fridays in Moonlight’s old slot.

Moonlight’s series finale is set to air this Friday, May 16th. Stay tuned! TV Series Finale home page

I watched the whole season of moonlight on megavideo, and I thought it was amazing. i do think you should start a season 2, Im sure it would be successful. I hate it when networks shut down a good series like that, they did the same thing with Bloodties, ended t on season 1, on a cliffhanger too. it really annoyed me. i would have felt better if they had just left it off on a good spot, so that i was staying up at night wondering what was going to happen next. I think if they started up the series again, it would run the network.

i deffinetly think that there should be a 2nd series.. my freinds mom watched it, so then my friend started watching it, then one day when she came over she showed it to me on youtube and after just 1 episode i fell in LOVE…! i ended up watching the whole series on youtube in 1 night then ended up buying it 5 days later. If the network would just alow them at least 1 more season i would be so so so happy!!!! expecially because the ending was just horrtifing. like seriously who in their right mind would end a series with Ben geting the list of vampires then it just ends….and they dont even explain the pictures that Ben gets from that camera guy with mick just geting right back up after geting hit by a car…

If I had known CBS was producing Moonlight back in 2007, I would have definitely watched it. I actually stumbled across the show when I was flipping through the channels. Then I instantly fell in love with it! I just finished watching Moonlight Season 1 on the internet. I was devastated to find out that there is NO season 2. The show has been canceled. Why do they always cancel the best shows, and let the boring ones go on? Moonlight is well played out. All the actors do an AMAZING job bringing out their characters. I honestly believe that if CBS brings Moonlight back, it will be a hit. The fact that this article is over 2 years old and loyal fans are petitioning, should ring a bell. PLEASE bring back MOONLIGHT!!!
