Terriers: New FX TV Show Debuts; Cancel or Keep It?

IMAGEThe new series on FX, Terriers, has been garnering some solid reviews. But, how did it do in the ratings? Should it continue for many years or be put to sleep…er, cancelled?

Terriers follows a pair of unorthodox and unlicensed private detectives. They’ll take just about any job, no matter how small or how strange. The show stars Donal Logue, Michael Raymond-James, Kimberly Quinn, Laura Allen, Rockmond Dunbar, and Jamie Denbo.

Per the overnight ratings, the Terriers premiere looks to be underwhelming at best. The debut attracted a 0.5 rating in the 18-49 demographic and about 1.6 million total viewers. While cable ratings are typically smaller than those of the major networks, FX has seen much better.

Should Terriers continue?

To put it in perspective, in September 2008, Sons of Anarchy debuted to a 1.2 rating in the key demo and 2.53 million viewers. This past March, Justified’s premiere brought in a 1.5 demo rating and 4.15 million.

Even Nip/Tuck, which had sharply declined over the years, averaged a 0.8 in the demo and 1.7 million viewers for its final season — in the same Wednesday night timeslot.

So, Terriers has gotten off to a very poor start. FX is planning to pair repeats with new installments of Sons of Anarchy. It seems doubtful but maybe this will help. Right now, it doesn’t look like Terriers will survive past its first season of 13 episodes.

But, what do you think? Is Terriers worth watching or should it be cancelled? Cancel or keep it?

Why cancel a GREAT show? January 11, 2011 at 11:31 pm

OMG! Its very disappointing that the show is cancelled. I was getting use to watching the show every week. It was a great show, a positive show. A ex drunken cop who is now a PI, and his partner is an ex criminal. They both turned their lives around. Heck, I want to find out if Bret will go to jail or not. Please give it another chance!!!!!!

When I heard that Terriers was cancelled, I couldn’t believe it. It is a great show with characters that you care about. I looked forward to it every week but feel it was not advertised enough. Please reconsider and bring it back for a second season. I loved these guys.

Im soooo mad that the show is being canceled. I really liked the show. I am hurt that it didnt have enough followers. I really would like it if the show could return for more seasons. I dont see what the title of the show means, but I am so use to it now that I like the title. Shoot, I even dance to the opening theme song. :) Great show!!

I love the show!!! The characters are terrific and the acters are great!!! I believe that people do not watch the show because of the title of the show. “Terriers” does not sound like a “manly” show nor does it really depict what the show is about. Perhaps a new name would boost the viewing.

Terriers is a great show – the actors play the characters to perfection and the storyline has been very unique and compelling. I am so disappointed to read the show is not continuing. Hope whoever makes these decisions reconsiders as it’s a show that would have a tremendous following if given half a chance.

I was so busy getting ready for christmas that I had no idea Terriers was being cancelled. Big mistake. I rate Terriers up there with two of my other FX faves Justified and Sons of Anarchy. Premature on the part of Execs to give up so soon. Terriers took a few episodes to reel me in, but hooked me just the same. Do-over please.

Hope FX reconsiders and orders a second season of Terriers. One of the best shows on the vast wasteland known as TV. Thought FX was a network that was a step ahead of all the rest, with shows like The Shield, Rescue Me, Sons of Anarchy, Damages, The Riches, and Justified. Shawn Ryan should be irate about the way FX promoted the show. Most of my friends didn’t know the show even existed until Itold them about it. When they started watching, they were amazed they hadn’t heard of it. Hey FX, maybe you should hire some knew promotional people and give it a shot in reruns either this winter or spring. Give it some time. Remember, Seinfield wasn’t an immediate hit, either.

Terriers is a complete saga of guys who have lots of flaws and deep passions about the people they care about. They even have their own brand of morality that is not always straight and narrow but that you can feel. The characters as written were interesting, the actors were all talented with nuanced performances. My husband and I waited anxiously for each episode. Donal is great! FX was too impatient to let this quirky and well-written show find its audience. They could have at least given us another year. I was beginning to believe that FX was interested in quality and had a little better understanding of its own audience. I am greatly disappointed. Tell the writers and actors We thought they were outstanding!!

what a shame… why is it that so many really good shows seem to get canceled ….. well, I guess we all know the answer to that one …. but several good shows that teetered on the edge their 1st season, eventually found the audience and grew and flourished ….. too bad, FX didn’t have the patience to see this thru ….. or pub it better …..
