Trauma: NBC Effectively Cancels TV Show, No Season Two

Trauma canceledLast May, NBC announced that it would be adding two new medical shows. Trauma would begin airing in the Fall and Mercy would come in early 2010. That plan got messed up when production on Parenthood, another new show, was delayed, and Mercy was brought in early to take its place.

With two new medical dramas on the network, many suspected there was going to be one too many. A few months later, one is struggling to survive and the other has been effectively cancelled.

Trauma revolves around a group of first responder paramedics in San Francisco. The high-action series is populated by an ensemble cast that includes Derek Luke, Cliff Curtis, Anastasia Griffith, Kevin Rankin, Aimee Garcia, Billy Lush, Jamey Sheridan, and Taylor Kinney.

The drama has had problems attracting viewers from the beginning. Its premiere only attracted 6.68 million viewers and a 2.2/5 rating/share of the 18-49 demographic. The following week, the numbers sank to 5.36 million and a 1.7/4. The numbers have been rising slowly since then but not by much. Monday’s episode hit a post-premiere high of 5.77 million and a 1.9/5, putting the show in fourth place for the timeslot.

TV show supportTo no surprise, NBC has decided not to order additional episodes of Trauma. While all 13 episodes of the series will be aired, the network won’t be ordering any more. It’s unknown if the cast and crew will be able to give the show any closure by the last episode.

What do you think? Are you disappointed that Trauma is ending or should it have been cancelled awhile ago?

UPDATE: Trauma returning with new episodes.

I do not know how NBC makes decisions. Any intelligent show gets cancelled, but stupid ones are back. Oh, I guess they cater to the bigger audience. Not to the ones with any brains.

I cant believe they cancelled Trauma. I understand the low rating aspect of it but I believe in time it would get better. Oddly enough they keep airing stupid and non-educational shows. Dumb decision!!!! Hopefully Steven can get a contract somewhere else….. anyways Corporate America!!!!!

I’m suprised this show was cancelled! I thought the show was educational, which is what T.V. needs now days! There is way too many stupid shows on as well as “reality” shows on…(my opionion) reality shows aren’t very reality, because if they were, then they all would have been created, directed, produced..etc by “Joe Blow” off the street that way they would be getting all the credit! However, as a Firefighter-EMT-I, the series was decently accurate on the things they would cross as well as the treatments for their patients. I think they should try the show again…very disappointing that children now days have very few educational T.V. shows to watch!!

I felt the same way about the educational aspect…I am just glad to see that an EMT can vouch for the fact that the information was accurate!! Thank you. I am so sad to see the show expire so soon. I feel like having a ceremony. lol. Yeah…to heck with Reality TV…its a crock of you know what and just another brain cell exterminator. The only ones I think should air at all are those that help people with true life problems like Biggest Loser, Homemakover and such.

We really liked the show. It is amazing that other shows stay on the air, and shows that aren’t entertaining at all stay on the air. Trauma was a good show, had good story lines and great actors.

I was really disappointed to see Trauma disappear. The show was NOT your typical medi-drama…it was a whole new and intuitive look at another side of the medical field. We have enough medical HOSPITAL dramas why did they choose Mercy? I loved the comedy, sarcasm, relationships between characters; the show was a hit in MY house…even with my teenager. I think it was a matter of timing, but I am not sure about this debate over not wanting to have two medical dramas at the same time. All I do know is that one day there was Jay Leno where my Trauma used to be and figured the whole thing was all about his tantrum over time slots.

Im REALLY dissapointed they canceled this show. It was different from your USUAL hospital/medical type shows…..I watched Mercy a couple times, but it didnt grab me like Trauma. It seemed, to me, like all the other hospital setting type shows. I LOVED the characters of Trauma……wow, weak decision.

I love Trauma my husband and I would watch this show every week and if we were not at home we would DVR it and watch later. This was the best show on TV. I can not believe it has been canceled I like so many have tried to watch Mercy but it didn’t prove to be worthy of my time. If I watch a show on TV it has to get my attention or I will not watch it. Can’t believe this. I wonder who makes the decisions? VERY SAD DAY

Im incredibly disappointed in NBC. Every time I get interested in a show and really begin to enjoy it- its taken off air. Trauma was never really given a chance. I watched Mercy a few times and it didnt catch my interest at all. If there were more shows like Trauma on air – children might show an interest in the medical or first responders fields- shows can really be used to learn.

Are you joking, I used to love watching NBC because they had all the great show’s, now I only watch 2 show’s on the whole network and that is the News and Mercy…. I can not believe they cancelled Trauma, they only want to keep the shows that no one watches. The reason I know this is because everyone at work talks about what they watched the night before and I never hear NBC mentioned at all!!! I am disappointed that NBC is going down the tubes…. I mean seriously they really need to get their head in the game and stop cancelling all the good shows and keep the crapy ones. This crap about having 2 medical show’s on 1 channell that is just crap look at ABC they have Grays Anatomy and Private Practice. NBC cancel’s ER, Bionic Woman, My own Worst Enemy, Knight Rider, drop Medium, all for Jay Leno and now look they have lost so many viewers it is not funny, maybe they should think about bringing back some of these show’s or actually try to keep a show longer than half a season before they decide to cut it in the middle.
