Trauma: NBC Effectively Cancels TV Show, No Season Two

Trauma canceledLast May, NBC announced that it would be adding two new medical shows. Trauma would begin airing in the Fall and Mercy would come in early 2010. That plan got messed up when production on Parenthood, another new show, was delayed, and Mercy was brought in early to take its place.

With two new medical dramas on the network, many suspected there was going to be one too many. A few months later, one is struggling to survive and the other has been effectively cancelled.

Trauma revolves around a group of first responder paramedics in San Francisco. The high-action series is populated by an ensemble cast that includes Derek Luke, Cliff Curtis, Anastasia Griffith, Kevin Rankin, Aimee Garcia, Billy Lush, Jamey Sheridan, and Taylor Kinney.

The drama has had problems attracting viewers from the beginning. Its premiere only attracted 6.68 million viewers and a 2.2/5 rating/share of the 18-49 demographic. The following week, the numbers sank to 5.36 million and a 1.7/4. The numbers have been rising slowly since then but not by much. Monday’s episode hit a post-premiere high of 5.77 million and a 1.9/5, putting the show in fourth place for the timeslot.

TV show supportTo no surprise, NBC has decided not to order additional episodes of Trauma. While all 13 episodes of the series will be aired, the network won’t be ordering any more. It’s unknown if the cast and crew will be able to give the show any closure by the last episode.

What do you think? Are you disappointed that Trauma is ending or should it have been cancelled awhile ago?

UPDATE: Trauma returning with new episodes.

Hey lets just hope they leave well enough alone this time. I heard they are only running a few episodes. That would be a shame. This show gives me an intense feeling when I watch it. I love this show and I too love Rabbit. mmm damn he is sexy at what he does. and last nights show was amazing! as always!

I too was psyched to see Trauma on last night and was not disappointed with it! I love Rabbit and all the guys, although Nancy could stop whoring it up for a while I still like her character. I wish they’d keep this show going. I don’t think that there are too many medical shows on right now, and the only ones that I do like are Trauma and House, so keep it on damn it!!!!

Both my wife and I enjoy Trauma and wish it would get renewed by NBC or picked up by another network willing to give it a chance like TNT has done for Southland.

I enjoyed last nights Trauma episode. I don’t agree with Rabbitt being suspended without pay. The bank robber gave him both her guns, but was still shot. Rabbitt was only defending himself. Still I think NBC should keep the show, and not cancel it.

it is a great show. It shows the life of the underdog, those first responders, that keep the people alive before the doctors “help” them. While getting underpaid, they do it and go through the stress of the life. And do a WONDERFUL job.

Alright!! According to this article http://www.ems1.com/ems-news/767342-nbc-brings-back-trauma-series/ Truama has been picked up for more episodes, more than the original 3 that is. It doesn’t say how many eps are contracted for, but says there will be an episode 20.

Thank you PinkLady73 for posting the following.

I love the fact that Trauma came back. My only complaint is that if I had not looked in the tv guide of our newspaper, I would not have know it was on. I can’t believe that they had no commercials/ads promoting that it was coming back. It is almost like NBC wanted it to fail because so many people complained when it was cancelled and they had to bring it back. I hope the ratings sky rocket and NBC realizes there mistake.

I actually DID see more than one commericianal about it being back on – which made me set my DV-R d go look up the article that I posted on here about them picking it back up – so they DID advertise it… trust me, I wouldn’t have researched it had I not seen the ad on TV!! Believe me, I’m beyond thrilled!! Now – let’s all share it with everyone and WATCH!! We need to keep it on the air!!

@lourdes: If you’ll look at the bottom of the article, there’s a link that explains that NBC ordered more episodes months ago. They’ve just started to air on Monday nights.
