It sounds like the Whitechapel TV show won’t be back for a fifth season. Lead actor Rupert Penry-Jones, who plays DI Joseph Chandler, broke the news via his Twitter account: “Sorry to be the bearer of bad news everyone but ITV don’t want any more Whitechapel. That’s all folks x.”
A detective drama, Whitechapel airs on BBC America here in the states but the cable channel has yet to announce when or if they will air the fourth season of six episodes. That batch finished airing in the UK on October 9th.
What do you think? Have you watched the Whitechapel TV series? Should BBC America run the final season?
Fantastic show. each season better than the last. Good old fashioned style murder thrillers updated to keep you on the edge of your seat. BBC, bring it back !
It wasn’t actually cancelled by the BBC they just bought the rights to show it in America. It was cancelled by ITV.
I have only recently viewed this most excellent TV series. The actors have worked hard at bringing their characters to life and at least deserved a fifth season to bring the story line to a consummate ending. I binge watched this series and was unpleasantly surprised by it’s premature end. I shouldn’t have, though, so many excellent programs are left by the wayside. Why is that?
It comes as a major disappointment to find that the excellent TV series of Whitechapel will not properly conclude. While I am glad they did have four thrilling seasons, if they had been concluded it after the first, the second, or even the third season, it would have felt completed, full, entire. However, ending it after the fourth season is rather bizarre as it leaves the program unconsummated. So much is left unfinished. I had convinced myself there definitely would be a season five exactly because so much was left to bring together and so many questions to answer. I… Read more »
I whole-heartily agree, Alice,. I am an American viewer, who enjoys many BBC programs. But it is disheartening to invest one’s time and viewing pleasure when the ‘powers that be’ care so little for the tastes and views of it’s viewership. This series deserved a proper ending.
Most enjoyable!!! You cannot end this series in such a stupid way. Season 5 is needed to wrap it up.
My husband and I (in our 70’s) have binged watched this series and are completely dissatisfied with the wrap-up of this excellently acted and written series. Think those in “power” to renew or axe this show have made a decision that impacts the loyalty of the viewers . If the cancellation was necessary, the network owed it to the fans to have a decent semblance of an ending. The actors on this series worked hard to bring a chaotic team into a cohesive investigative team all through their interpertatation of their characters.

Sharon Rasmusson
please reconsider it is an amazing show my wife and I got pretty hooked up, the best thing BBC has done in a long time
Wonderful series, great writing and just getting to evils source.
Wonderful series, great writing and just homing in on the evils source.
wonderful series, greatly written and was just uncovering the evil’s source.
What a great show. I’ve been telling everyone to watch.the story gets more compelling and the characters get more complex. What a shame if it doesn’t come back.
I can’t believe this show has been cancelled. It was one of the best series the BBC had and they’ve had some great ones. Really bad news. I hope they reconsider.
This series is great! Fascinating story lines that weaves in elements of past crimes and mysteries. Love It! Please bring it back and if nothing else, at least do a closing episode to wind up the last season, which ended on a cliff-hanger (again!)
please please reconsider bringing whitechapel back. One of the best shows, actors are great, great mysterious story lines!!!!
Very disappointed! We were hooked on a well written, well acted series.
Please reconsider the options.
