After some confusion surrounding the future of the 1883 television series, we finally have some clarification. There will be a second season and it will revolve around real-life lawman Bass Reeves with David Oyelowo in the lead role.
Streaming on the Paramount+ subscription service, the 1883 TV show debuted in December and the first season follows a previous generation of Yellowstone’s Dutton family as they embark on a journey west through the Great Plain, to establish what would eventually become the Yellowstone Ranch. Season one stars Sam Elliott, Tim McGraw, Faith Hill, Isabel May, LaMonica Garrett, Audie Rick, Marc Rissmann, Eric Nelsen, and James Landry Hebert with Dawn Olivieri, Emma Malouff, Alex Fine, Gratiela Brancusi, Anna Fiamora, Amanda Jaros, Nichole Galicia, Stephanie Nur, Noah Le Gros, and Martin Sensmeier in recurring roles. Guest stars include Billy Bob Thornton, Graham Greene, and Tom Hanks.
In February, prior to the first season’s 10 episode conclusion, Paramount+ ordered additional episodes of 1883 — stopping short of calling it a second season renewal. Then, once the first season finale had aired, series creator Taylor Sheridan revealed that he considered the season to be akin to a 10-hour film with a firm ending.
It appeared that Paramount+ and Sheridan were out of sync. One might assume that the upcoming 1932 series would serve as the “additional episodes” order for 1883 but the streaming service had announced both orders separately in the same press release.
Now, it’s clear that viewers are getting more of 1883 after all, albeit with a different story and cast. Paramount+ has announced that 1883: The Bass Reeves Story is in the works. Billed as an “epic limited series”, the show will focus on legendary wild west lawman Bass Reeves (Oyelowo). “Known as the greatest frontier hero in American history, and also believed to be the inspiration for The Lone Ranger, Reeves worked in the post-Reconstruction era as a federal peace officer in the Indian Territory, capturing over 3,000 of the most dangerous criminals without ever being wounded.”
The Bass Reeves series was previously announced as a project produced by Sheridan but seemingly separate from the Yellowstone franchise. In September, ViacomCBS and MTV Entertainment Studios struck an exclusive overall deal with Oyelowo and his wife, actress, writer, and producer Jessica Oyelowo, for original scripted and unscripted series via their Yoruba Saxon productions.
Additional details and a premiere date for 1883: The Bass Reeves Story will be released in the future.
What do you think? Did you watch the first season of the 1883 TV series on Paramount+? Are you planning to watch 1883: The Bass Reeves Story when it debuts?
I would like to see it finish the lives of the people and thier new life in Montana up to the building of the Yellowstone .so much of a gap in between unanswered. But loved the movie.
It would have been great if they kept Elsa alive and did a show about her and Sam
Absolutely – they were a great pairing. I can only imagine Sam waiting in spring for Elsa to return to him, not knowing what happened to her, did she die, did she leave him. Both great characters. Though how she’d have made her way back to him is uncertain in those dangerous times and locations.
We watched 1883 and loved it. We will watch the next one if and when a starting date is announced.
Love love loved this series please make more of them
LOVED IT, in the top 5 shows EVER
Loved it, can’t wait for more!!!!
Not if Sheridan isn’t the writer and director
Brilliant series, Sam Elliott in particular was awesome but all involved were great
Really enjoyed it, cannot wait for series 2
Yes I plan to watch both, I love it
Loce
Absolutely awesome!! Dying for more! PLEASE
I would also like to have seen James and his family build the home and seen John grow up .
The best program I have ever seen . I felt very emotional it finished as I didn’t want it to end . The dialogue and picture screening was absolutely brilliant. I cannot fault this at all .
It’s getting to where we don’t trust that a series will continue with so many of them ending mid stream. 1883 was real good but I want the story to get us all the way to the Yellowstone ranch. BOOOOOO!!!
I agree. You get invested in show and they change the whole story line. That’s not a season 2!! It should have went all the way to Dutton Ranch. What was the point? Every actor on 1883 was beyond Awesome ! Disappointed it ended this way.
1883 is better than Yellowstone (which I love!) you really should give us a sense of how the next generation of Dutton evolves from 1883. The actors were all fabulous.
