ABC certainly needs new shows that are a hit in the ratings. They didn’t have much luck last season. Will this year be different or will much of their new crop of TV shows be cancelled as well?
There’s lots of data that network execs looks at when deciding whether to renew or cancel a TV series but ratings are the major ingredient. These charts will be updated daily, as new ratings data becomes available.
ABC shows (so far): 20/20, 500 Questions, America’s Funniest Home Videos, American Crime, The Astronaut Wives Club, The Bachelor, Bachelor in Paradise, The Bachelorette, BattleBots, Black-ish, Boston EMS, Castle, Celebrity Family Feud, Celebrity Wife Swap, Cristela, Dancing with the Stars, Extreme Weight Loss, Forever, Fresh Off The Boat, Galavant, The Goldbergs, The Great Christmas Light Fight, Grey’s Anatomy, How to Get Away with Murder, In An Instant, Last Man Standing, Manhattan Love Story, Marvel’s Agent Carter, Marvel’s Agents of SHIELD, The Middle, Mistresses, Modern Family, Nashville, Once Upon a Time, Primetime: What Would You Do?, Repeat After Me, Resurrection, Revenge, Rookie Blue, Save My Life: Boston Trauma, Scandal, Secrets and Lies, Selfie, Shark Tank, The Taste, and The Whispers.
Note: If you’re not seeing the updated charts, please try reloading the page. You can also view them here and here.
A couple of notes about these charts:
These figures are updated automatically as new ratings are released. The averages are based on the final national numbers (live plus same day viewing), unless marked with an asterisk (*). For technical reasons, I have to resort them manually so feel free to let me know if I missed something.
Keep in mind that the demo numbers are typically what’s most important to advertisers. Therefore, that’s how the networks measure success. Advertisers pay more for ad time on a show that has a higher demo rating. Because older viewers don’t count? No, it’s because younger viewers watch less traditional TV and are harder to reach.
Demo numbers are typically reported using the 10ths decimal place (2.4, for example). In the averages, I’m using an extra decimal for easier ranking.
The networks take into account when shows air on Fridays and Saturdays, nights when TV viewership is lower.
Note: Due to Nielsen reportings glitch, some ratings for Modern Family, SHIELD, Once Upon a Time, Nashville, and Revenge have been adjusted downward. Nielsen has only released restated numbers for the first week of the season (9/22-9/28/14) so far.
What do you think? Are you surprised by any of the ratings? Which shows should be doing better? Which one do you think will be cancelled next?
WOW! Aren’t we just about worn out with seeing people get hit in the crotch, falling down on ice, off roofs, etc. on “America’s Funniest Videos?” Isn’t that dreary program (& its host) getting long in the tooth by now? And, couldn’t something FRESH, innovative & unique like “THE QUEST” replace it? ABC would be wise to RENEW “THE QUEST”…visit facebook…search out their “The Quest” page there & related “Quest Army” page (it is at 1,159+ members now, and growing daily!). ABC would see for themselves how important this program is…how INTELLIGENT it is…how much VALUE it has to its… Read more »
Lost interest in Resurrection a while ago. I had about 4 eps on my DVR before the break that i promised myself i would watch before it came back in January. Never did, let 2 more record and just last night I stopped the recording and erased all the eps. I don’t know why I lost interest I just did which is really inconvenient considering I watch OUAT & Revenge! Ratings suggest I have nothing to regret moving forward
Well if you’re going by ratings for Revenge…
I hope resurrection doesnt get canceled. It’s up against the walking dead. It never gas a chance to get the viewers it deserves. We want season three and more…..
Resurrection is the best show out there, but the time slot it has is horrible. It competes with The Walking Dead and Sunday night football, which plays at the same time. I, however, know so many people that are obsessed with this show, and really really really hope (that’s 3 Reallys) it gets renewed. 🙂
Nashville is my favorite. Sorry to see Revenge doing so low.
I gather the numbers in the red mean no a chance in hell of a return?
Sorry, disagree w/your opinion on the actress(Alana De La Garza) who plays the female det. on “Forever”. I think she is fine. I have seen her in other shows and have like in those as well. Do agree about the show, like it a lot. I think it will be cancelled however. I hope not but don’t think it will appeal to targeted audience.
Any word about Motive returning for another season? It was renewed in Canada but I can’t find any information about its chances in the USA.
No word yet http://wp.me/pcisc-7Ia
I hope agents of shields rating pick up
me 2
i love the show
I can’t understand why the series ratings are so low. As a sci-fi addict I think the series is awesome.
L0ve the tv show Manhattan Love Story!!! This have to be one of the cutest show I’ve seen in a long time. The ratings would go up if they would change the day to wed at 730
Agree! Anyone who didn’t watch it or just watched the 1st episode should give it a chance
It got canceled
It got canceled
It’s been canceled already sorry I knew it would be
Restated Nielsen Data: ABC Premiere Week Highlights
http://tvbythenumbers.zap2it.com/2014/10/11/restated-nielsen-data-abc-premiere-week-highlights/313196/
Those ratings have been integrated into these averages, as have the other revised numbers that have been released so far.
thanks for the reply and i have noticed that now but i think their is some old number Resurrection season premiere (2.2 not 2.5) – How to Get Away with Murder (3.8 not 3.9) – Scandal (3.8 not 3.9)
You’re correct. Thanks for the catch. The numbers and averages have been updated. What a mess this Nielsen screw up is. :/
With all the wonderful feedback on ‘Forever’ on F/B, I don’t understand the low numbers. This is their first season and I have seen nothing but raves about every aspect of this show. Great actors, great characters, great writing, totally engaging story lines. I sincerely hope that ABC gives them a chance to attract the 18-49 demographic before they decide to cancel them. I totally LOVE this show; but, then again, I’m 72 yrs. old and not considered ‘worthy’ of consideration. But, by your own admittance, your precious 18-49ers ‘watch less traditional TV and are harder to reach’. Well, there… Read more »
I to am more mature, 64 years old, and I look for ward to Forever every week. For me, it is taking the place of The Mentalist which had it’s last season last year. I love the characters and it’s nice to see Judd Hirsch back! Please don’t cancel this show. All my friends watch and love it also!
Hi, Joni Clark. Here’s a little perk up for you, I just read that CBS announced The Mentalist will return for its 7th and final season and they’ll have a 2-hr. Finale in Feb. I’m sad that this show is ending, too, but; at least we’ll have Simon around for a last hurrah and a proper wrap-up to the series. I was sad to find that my Forever wasn’t on tonight (11/4) because of the election coverage. OMG, we have to wait another whole week for the next episode. Glad you’re enjoying this show. Isn’t Ioan Gruffud just the most… Read more »
Hi Maryann…I’m so glad there’s going to be a proper ending to the show! My daughter texted me last night it’s going to start on Thursday Nov 20. Yay! I miss Cho! I think he’s on Major Crimes now which is in hiatus, but I still miss him. and Simon! Yes, Ioan Gruffud is gorgeous. Bedroom eyes! And I always loved Judd Hirsch. Not to crazy about the main female detective character. I just don’t think she’s a very good actress. But I can put up with her just to watch Henry! I looked him up and found his name… Read more »
The winter episodes of Major Crimes started this week. If you missed it, it is usually repeated the following Monday, or is already on Video On Demand: TV: TNT.
I absolutely agree with you!! Not only is Forever a wonderful show..but the fact that only the 18-49 age group seems to count is completely ridiculous!! Now in fairness I am 38 so I fall in those peramitters however I know a ton of 65+ (including my mom) that love the show as well. If Forever gets cancelled I will be sending A LOT of not so nice emails to the execs over at ABC!!!!
The problem with Forever is that it should never have been placed on the air in the first place. ABC has a bad habit of duplicating failed FOX television shows, and expecting them to be successful. Forever is a carbon copy of the FOX show “New Amsterdam” which was about a Dutch police officer who was unable to die until he found his one true love. John Amsterdam looked like a man in his thirties, and had a son in his sixties who owned a bar. Sound familiar? New Amsterdam only lasted for eight episodes. Why would ABC have the… Read more »
I guess I’m “distasteful” because I love all 4 of those shows/comedies…
Now I have seen bad pilot shows before but Black-ish was the worst!!!!!!!!!!!!!! “Keep it real” , give me a break talk about sick-lame-lazy-blind-cripple and crazy
THIS SHOW REALLY SUCKS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!. Now I see whats wrong with ABC its run by ignorant fools.
but if it keeps the ratings that it has right now, it will go on and on and on
I think you cancelling Ravenswood and Twisted was a big mistake. They were both great shows. But yet you choose to keep discussing shows like Modern family, The middle or the Goldberg’s 3 of the most seriously unwatchable shows I’ve ever seen. I don’t know who is making the new season line up choices but they must need serious help.
Do you mean “discussing shows” or “disgusting shows” ? Those two words have very different meanings.
I mean shows like The Middle, Modern Family , The Goldberg’s, and Black-ish are distasteful, totally unwatchable shows, I would not let even my dog watch!!!!!!!!!!!
because that would be cruelty to animals
I totally agree with you. I especially cringe when I see the children acting like little adults and the adults acting like children. I used to like Modern Family, but it got worse and worse every year, so I stopped watching. The Goldberg’s was cute for the first few shows, then every plot was the same. The mom going out of her way doing something outlandish to think she was helping her son, but just acting outlandish. I love two of the actors in the Goldberg’s, Margo Martindale and Beau Bridges and I thought it might be a good show,… Read more »
I agree, I hate those types of shows. I love Nashville. I live for Wed night
